Soaking the winner on the 18th green

Does anyone else really, really dislike this new tradition?

 

I just watched the finish of the Turkish Open and Melissa Reid was just soaked after she won.

 

When did this start?

It does seem a bit silly, but it's not hurting anybody I guess.

I don't have a problem with it as long as it's done after the players in the group have exchanged pleasantries. The other players shouldn't have to wait to embrace a champaign-soaked competitor.

Also, there should be a sliding scale for the level of celebration. If you win your first tournament, first tournament in 5 years, or major championship, then by all means have fun. However, Inbee winning the Joe's Crab Shack Invitational for her 15th tour win doesn't merit an over-the-top celebration.

It's stupid, but it only crosses the line of good taste when they don't wait until the players in the group have exchanged post-round pleasantries. I.e. when the losers have to hug the winner and get victory champagne (or water, don't even get me started on that) all over them, that just makes a mockery of sportsmanship. Think about it. You just lost, possibly in bitter fashion, and now you have to walk back to the locker room stinking of someone's else's victory champagne. In a sport that prides itself on decorum and sportsmanship, how is that remotely proper? I wish people would use their brains more.

I have no issue with the soaking party especially if it is a good looking pro....hey I'm a LPGA fanboy...what can I say.

I still waiting for the day SMOKEHOUSE (Belen) gets completely soaked in a light colored outfit wearing matching knee highs.

I think they mostly "air hug" each other on LPGA anyway. No real contact other than the hands.

I think it's awkward. Example: Sandra Gal trying to soak Martin Kymer on the 18th green at Pinehurst. Kymer handled it well, very cordial. But, IMO it needs to end. It looks silly.

Seems like the situation could get a little awkward during a 2-woman playoff with the soakers awaiting one particular player to soak, and then that player loses the playoff. It's only fitting that if the intended soakee loses, the winning player gets to grab a bottle from one of the soakers and then she douses the soaker(s).

Golf is too buttoned up most of the time and I like that the ladies cut loose.
