How in the Hell do you Mugs do it in the NJ and NY

I recently spent a week in Newark and commuted over to Manhattan a few days. I have to admit, between traffic, crowds, the costs associated with living and eating here, you can have it!

Trying to find a parking spot was down right stupid. Costs of drinks 2 and 3 times what I pay here. Food, lets just say the culinary talents are not put to good use in the places I visited. Granted, a week if not a lot of time to find those great spots to eat and drink, but there were no really jump out at you and grab you by the throat places either.

The manner at which people drive and cut in, just crazy. I guess if you have only experienced this you may find it ok, for me being from the Midwest and now living in Florida, you can keep the large city life of the north east.

Your first problem was staying in Newark. Count your blessings you're still alive, lol.

I lived in Jersey for a year, and it's true, people can't drive. Think it's bad now? Wait till there's some snow on the ground. They don't slow down and still drive just as crazy. As many times as we went into the city, I will NEVER drive there. Way too many people and the people that do drive there drive like buffoons.

It has its pros and cons.

Con - expensive
Pro - high paying jobs are more common

Con - traffic and crappy driving
Pro - always something to do
High paying jobs are more common because you can't afford to survive without one. Unfortunately, that extra pay gets eaten up in the increased cost of living.
I agree but if you keep your cost structure down, you can build a hefty retirement plan and retire to a lower cost yet beautiful area.

Newark?

For a week? Surprised you arent even madder ; )

Newark? Theres your problem. No wonder you have no perspective.

What the heck you doing in newark?

Daughter graduated from Seton Hall with her Masters so went up attend that ceremony.

The other post that stated there are more higher paying jobs is true, my daughter graduated with a degree in Micro Biology and was hired on at a little over 52 K a year. Not overly bad right out of college but the costs of rent and living more than off set the salary she is getting. Overall, I think she should take that job and start farming out resumes to what I would call better parts of the country.

Ahhh, excellent.

Well, down the road, there are hundreds of beautiful, safe suburban towns, villages, hamlets surrounding the city to make home (and garages).

Meantime, if she plans to live in the city, it will be a fantastic experience to meet and work with many of the most gifted people in the world, just like her ; )

Next time you come to town, she will also know some fantastic places to eat as well.

If you spend time in NY and learn it from a non tourist perspective, you may actually look forward to future visits.

 • 2 weeks later...

Its just the price you pay for a 24 hour city with access to anything at anytime with all different types of people, the best food in the county (you went to the wrong places), high paying jobs, etc...Personally I think the biggest negative of living in NYC is the lack of good golf that is close. Someone who works even 9-5 (not common in many industries in NYC) can not play golf during the week. Its near impossible without taking the day or half day off. In a lot of other parts of the country, a person can get out of work at 5, be at the course by 5:30 and play 18 holes. This is not possible in NYC as it will take you at least an hour+ to just get out of the city. Weekend golf at a public course anywhere within an hour drive? Forget about it...6 hour round if you can even get a tee time....Like I said earlier...its the price you pay...

PM me next time you come to town and I will give you some restaurant recos.

Funny, I spent a few weeks in Ft Myers a few years ago and bitched about the same things, just in reverse. In the NE, the speed limits are 65, but no one drives below 75. In FL, the speed limits are 75, but no one drives over 65. And apparently it's the law that when driving on I-75, someone has to be in the left lane driving 55 at all times. I passed more cars on the right than I did on the left.

As far as food, there are probably 100 restaurants in NYC that are better than anything down there. There was one place I liked, but I forget the name. Unfortunately the clientele there made it feel like I was eating in a nursing home.

Cali is expensive, just from the 1.5 months time I've spent there over the last few months. That being said, parts of New Jersey are comparable, and I would say New York City is just as expensive to live as SoCal, at least where I was and visited (Huntington beach, Costa Mesa, long beach, Newport Beach). I didn't look into housing, but day to day expenses are comparable. Housing in New Jersey is entirely overpriced, and anything in the city is ridiculous.

Ny is ny.

People say,

$5000 2-bedroom?!

But you get 3 kids who just graduated with jobs paying 150k.

They put up a wall and make it a 3-bedroom. 17 hundred each. Dad guarantees the lease.

There you go.

I'm not a big fan of mega cities. Too many people, too fast paced. Give me a medium sized city where you get the benefits of city stuff, and you can live in the suburbs and bolt around in your car whenever you want, and actually find parking when you go somewhere.

I've been to NY, been to Shanghai....not sure i could live in such a massive place

The only experience I've ever had with a new yorker, and this was a 5-6 yrs ago...

Heading S on 95 and I got a logging truck entering @ the chilco on- ramp, try to roll over to the hammer lane, but get cut off from the rig behind me, alright hit the brakes and slide in behind him.

This guy rolls right and cuts off the logging truck on entry...and here comes the horn, brake, and dust since he's entering @ the shoulder now...and here comes this guy's arm right out the window shaking the finger.

We all hit the garwood light together (and I dont care who you are this light is never green for you), Im behind the yorker and the logger is behind me, cab door opens up walks past my rig and throws 2 damn fine rights in the guys open window. Saw it all, the guy looked at his window when he saw the shadow crossing it, and got nailed, racked him right into his wife/gf, not sure, and It should of been done there, but he yanks him back and raccoons him

Only new yorker I've seen up here, we got plenty of californians (and who dont ,it's like a virus), but they seem alright road wise.

Guy maybe had a NY plate

But he was not a native NYer.

We know not to stay sitting in a car with somebody coming over.
