Maltby DBM Irons - Thoughts?

games

Recommended Posts

I built a 6 iron to test out.

I'm really impressed with the finish on these DBM's. In the hand, the DMB finish feels incredibly strong, almost tough (if that makes any sense). The heads are still quite soft on a nicely struck ball too. The buttery feel exceeded my expectations. The trajectory is very high for something that looks this classical in shape.

The offset is too much for me, which is really disappointing. I wanted to bag these really bad. They're so damn sexy.

They only have .100 offset through the entire set. Much less than AP2'S and incredibly less than any Ping or GI set. I wonder if the specs are off on yours?

These really have me interested. Love a black head but hate how none ever seem to hold up over time. The durability reported of this finish has me geeked.

that's great. I wish I would have thought of Maltby before I bought my G25 irons. I can't wait to get the DBM's in a week.

Report back after you get them. I'm interested in reading your thoughts. What shaft are you pairing with them?

I game the DBMs and i'm a big fan of them! Great feeling iron, easy to hit, a little higher flight. I've been a fan since the M-05, MTF, TE, basically the same design/model throughout the years. I have mine shafted with Apollo Gunsmoke shafts... perdy!

Interested in hearing what clubs everyone switched from prior to their DBMs. I'm playing Mizuno MX-25s now with SL300s and a Callaway supersoft.

I have what I consider very high ball flight up to the 8 iron. I'm looking for that high ball flight to extend into my 4-7 irons. Thinking of pairing DBM heads with TT XP 95 or 105 for higher ball flight. I'm fine with my short irons being even higher to get extra height in the 4-7.

Thoughts?

Prior to my DBM I had some Dynacraft Prophet Forged CNCs. DBMs with those shafts should fit the bill for the higher flight you're looking for!

The DBM's will have to beat out the G25's in the bag currently

I'm considering the new G as well. Can't do the Xcaliber tour X shafts if I go that route though.

Let me know how they compare to the G25.

As you can see in my sig I'm playing my Maltby DBM's right now. Previously I was playing Ping i20 with S300 and Cushin inserts. I've got KBS Tour 130X in my DBM's.

I hit the ball high already but the Maltbys are a very high ball flight for me even in the long irons. I don't consider that to be a negative though. I will say they spin maybe a tad much for me, especially into the wind and with the short irons. That could just mean they're not the best fit for me. Still, I've shot some great rounds with them and needed a break from my Pings.

They feel great on good hits and not that bad on mishits. Very forgiving. I've had mine for maybe 6-8 months I think and the finish is holding up great. Put a ding on the sole of my PW first time out but other than that no marks to speak of. Finish looks brand new. Black heads into Black Nickel KBS with black tour velvet grips. It's a sweet combo.

I anticipated they'd be a higher ball flight by reviews I've read, that's why I went with S300's. While not the lowest ball flight anymore probably , the DGS300's are a standard for irons that launch low and low spin.

wandering if you used taper or parallel kbs tours? The parallel kbs tour supposedly profile much softer than their taper counterpart.

How would you rate the forgiveness vs the i20? That is what I'm currently playing. Witt CFS R hard stepped twice.

I'd say the same or slightly better. Definitely not as harsh on mishits feel wise. Distance loss seems to be about equal.

I already hit it high with my current set up. Hoping with graphite AXE TOUR X shafts this go round that will bring it down a bit.

Had the new shafts (KBS Tour R, taper tip, black nickel) for a couple of weeks. Sadly, I lost five yards from the shaft change.

A few variables to consider:

- My old PXs were .370; these are .355;

- The KBS Tour tip (and shaft as a whole) is softer than the PX 6.0;

- The KBS is about 10g lighter;

In addition, the fitting I had put me at 80mph. But, at 78mph, the DNA shows a completely different set of shafts. I chose the KBS Tour because it was recommended in both sets, just hard-stepped at the higher speed and regular insertion at the lower. The fitter suggested going with the softer setup since I told him I would be playing these awhile.

I'd be interested if the group thinks I should have them hard stepped. Or, go with a different shaft with a stiffer tip (maybe DGR300)? Or, just play them for awhile and try to adapt?

Hmm, good question. I'm no expert in shafts, but why not hard step them? I'd rather play for the now and worry about 5 years down the road, then. Or go R300 hard stepped.

I'm 35 and use CFS R hard stepped twice in my i20s but am thinking of moving to graphite for the DBMs. Something like a steelfibers that feels more steel but shock absorbent like a graphite. That is why the Xcaliber tour X from AXE are on my list. Seems to be the closest match to aerotech steelfibers I can find. And about $30 each less than steelfibers

Since these irons accept .355 taper tip and .370 parallel tip shafts, would tip trimming .355 taper tip shafts in the short irons be ok? I want to build a set that is 2" over length in the pw and decreases down to 1" over in the 4 iron and my big concern is the shafts playing too soft in the short irons. Simply put, I'd like my long irons shafts to be hard stepped 1-2x and transition to 2-3x in the short irons to help keep the ball flight down and allow the shaft to perform closer to how it should at std. length.
