Mac VIP Hand Ground Wedges (Pic Heavy)

A fellow member (thugthebunny) recently passed on a set of Macgregor VIP mb's. I began to hunt for matching wedges to complete the set, but wasn't finding exactly what I wanted. I stumbled upon a few threads in which WRXer's had commissioned hand ground VIP wedge heads from a man in 'Nevada' and reached out to see if he had any blanks remaining. Thankfully the member had access to some old stock agreed to take on a new project.

 

Here is our journey in pictures . . .

 

I ordered a 52* with 8* of bounce and a 'standard' sole grind. Here is the head after some grinding and polishing:

 

 

 

 

 

I also ordered a 58* with 12* of bounce and a 'C' grind on the sole. Here is the head after some grinding and polishing:

 

 

 

 

 

We discussed a flange design for each head and I sent an awful drawing to try to clarify my thoughts. Here are the heads with hand hammered 'snow' and lofts stamped.

 

 

 

 

 

Then a torched finish was applied to each head. I asked the man from 'Nevada' to surprise me with a colour and he chose purplish hues.

 

 

 

 

 

As a final touch laser etched maple leafs were added to the flange. The yellow colour is a product of the laser combined with the torched finish. No paint-fill has been applied. I'm really looking forward to adding long gold ringed ferrules to each head.

 

 

 

I've purchased many golf clubs over the years, but this has to be one of the coolest experiences I've ever had. The man from 'Nevada' sent me images each night as he worked on the heads. It was a pleasure to see each design come to life. The final product is beyond anything I initially expected and was surprisingly affordable for a custom hand ground.

I didn't know it was possible to achieve such dark purple hues. I had given the man from 'Nevada' free reign to choose the finish and was really happy with his selection.

Scor wedges were going to be my next option if I couldn't place my hand on a matching set of Macs. I really like the compact shape of their heads and the v-sole is versatile.

I'm certain you'll be pleased with your decision.

You know I'll have no issues sharing. I didn't attach photos of the faces as the files were too large, but each has been blasted in the area of the score lines to reduce glare. The 52* has the distinctive Mac diamonds framing the score lines and the 58* does not. Both heads are raw so I will need to apply oil to keep them in this condition. The high use areas (sole and face) will wear over time, but I'm sure this will add 'character'. Luckily I never seem to land in a sand trap ; )
