Shaft question for you guys...

I have a question for you. I have a friend who also does some clubfitting for me. Overall he is really good, and he usually does the work for just above cost for me.

 

Recently, I had him reshaft a couple of irons.

 

Here is my question, though...

 

When I got the irons I noticed that the shaft bands/stickers were installed in front of the club, so that when I look down on the club I see the sticker. It likely won't bother me too much, but my question is this:

 

1. Should I make him redo it?

2. Should I just remove the shaft band / sticker?

3. Should I try to remove the sticker and reapply on the back myself?

4. Should I just not worry about it?

 

Only reason I ask, really, is that once I bought a used club that had no shaft band and it was heavily discounted presumably due to that.

Shaft bands are a matter of personal preference.

If you don't like it, remove it.

If you don't like the way it's positioned, put a new one on in the place that you like it. I have never had luck reapplying.

Most club builders have tons of the labels laying around and it would be easy to make the change.

Some brands like KBS and True Temper (the two that I have dealt with) will send you labels free of charge if you ask nicely and if the ones are worn or deteriorating.

For what it's worth, it always pays to specify EXACTLY what you want. (labels down)

Just call them directly and get some sent to you. Not that big of a deal that you can't do it yourself if he's hooking you up on the regular.

1, 2, 3, 4: Personal choice. It is just a sticker.

Your follow up question confuses me though. Steel shafts can often be identified by weight and step pattern. The sticker is purely for aesthetics.

He charged you, although at a discount, but he still profited.. He treated you as a paying customer so you should get a good experience.. Ask him politely to recitify to yoir liking.

If he did it free or at parts cost.. Dont say anything

From my perspective, even if he was not a friend and you paid full price, if you didn't specify your preference for a specific orientation of the labels before the work was done, then you don't really have any basis for having the work redone w/o some additional cost. Without knowing more about your specific relationship, I can't really make any prediction but I certainly would not approach any friend of mine doing work for me with the mentality of "making" him do anything. I might approach him to share you concerns and ask for his advice on what options you might have. But as to the rest of the options it largely depends on how much it bothers you visually, and how much life you expect to get out of the clubs. e.g. If you plane on using them for more than a year or two, the resale value is not going to be enough to worry about any additional loss from a missing shaft label.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. If I approached him, it would definitely be in the "right" way...i.e. hey, what do you think about this?, how can I fix, etc.?

I didn't specify the position of the shaft label because I assumed (I know, I know) that everyone would know that they should be on the bottom, and he had several of my clubs in his possession for other work, all with the labels on the bottom (and all same shafts).

Sounds like most of you would consider it no big deal, so that is good to know.

Updating:

I hit the 2 irons today with the shaft bands on top (Project X 95 Flighted 6.0 for a 2 iron and a 6 iron). It didn't bother me in the least. So thanks for your advice...I'll just leave as is. Thanks again!
