Best conditioned golf course you have played

Recommended Posts

Pablo Creek in Jacksonville, FL. I used to caddy there as a kid. That place was immaculate. Not the greatest course in the world but a good track. It was ALWAYS immaculate and was a great experience being able to be a part of. Another great course in the area was Sawgrass CC across the street from TPC. That place had some great greens. I've played TPC probably 50 times and it was in good shape less than 25% of the time...

I play at Old Chatham here in Durham, NC a lot because my brother in law is a member there and it is typically pretty good. At least the greens are. They had some issues this winter with drainage, we got a lot of rain. My course, 12 Oaks in Holly Springs, NC has some of the best fairways I have ever played on. We still have bent grass greens and during the cooler months the greens can be pretty decent but just don't get as fast as I'd like.

Another great track I remember was Quintero outside Scottsdale. That was a fun track and was in fantastic shape when we played there.

I've only played down at Pinehurst once and we played 2, 8, Forest Creek (both) and Dormie Club once when were quail hunting down there. Forest Creek has two great tracks.

8 was in great shape and a fun track to play. I was underwhelmed with 2, would've liked to play where the pros play from. I also wasn't playing at all at the time we played so I was rusty to say the least.

Forest Creek and Dormie are both great tracks. Did you play #2 pre or post restoration?

I find it to be incredible post restoration. Some agree, others do not. I love the native grasses, sandy waste areas and "natural" look to it. But, that's what I grew up on. Probably plays a large role in my tastes.

Fun thread because it brings back great memories of what a pleasure it can be to play this great game for all who see it and post.

Muirfield Village and Cypress Point, tied. Monterey Peninsula CC came very close.

These places caused my jaw to drop when I got out there. Places that if the ball mark was not completely invisible after you repaired it, or the divot was not seamless when replaced, you felt bad. And prompted the phrase I still use today to describe superb conditions. . . . the finest grass that money can grow !

So subjective. Time of year has a big affect on this. Playing Pebble in March is a whole different animal than playing it in June.

That said, here are some notables for their conditioning (South to North then West): [list]
[*]Adios CC: If it ever gets a little ragged, they tear it up. Tight property, but immaculately maintained.
[*]Country Club of Florida: Some of the best greens in Florida. Fast conditions.
[*]Kinloch: Immaculate bent conditions in an unforgiving climate. Probably one of the best-maintained courses in the US.
[*]RTJ: Wall-to-wall bent and even better after their recent bunker work.
[*]Sankaty Head: Firm, fast. Even the fescue areas are "thinned" to help move play.
[*]California Golf Club: Maybe the best-conditioned course I've seen on the West Coast.
[*]Cypress: Not "immaculate" in the Augusta sense that you'd imagine, but perfect in the way it was intended.

Shadow Glenn outside of Kansas City was in great shape the last time I played it, the greens were firm fast and perfect. Have not been there in a few years.

I have played several well known courses, (Pebble, Spyglass, #2,#8 and several Arizona resorts) but in terms of condition I don't think any were better than this.

Ping G400 Testing G410.  10.5 set at small -
Ping G410 3, 5 and 7 wood

Ping G410 5 hybrid-not much use.
Mizuno JPX 921 Hot Metal. 5-G
Vokey 54.10, 2009 58.12 M, Testing TM MG2 60* TW grind and MG3 56* TW grind.  Or Ping Glide Stealth, 54,58 SS.
Odyssey Pro #1 black
Hoofer, Ecco, Bushnell
ProV1x-mostly

This year has been about the best weather I can ever recall for growing grass in KC. Every course, no matter the reputation or budget, seems to have perfect fairways and greens.

I cannot agree with the Ritz Carleton in Orlando. Place had serious bare fairways and greens when I played it last year. And it doesn't drain well at all so if its been wet or rainy the course is like a sponge and really wet.

However, the Couer D'Alene golf course was magnificent the few times that I've played it. They had guys filling in the divots with new sand after each group. Fresh flowers each day on the course. Mowed at night to not disturb the players with conditioning. Not the best or most imaginative layout even with the island green. But definitely great conditioning.

Shadow creek is an experience to be believed. Great course. Caddy was apologizing because a few places were rough due to new sprinkler system and aeration. But overall great conditioning and really fun track. expensive as all getout, but one of the few tracks that I didn't feel I got ripped off paying that price.

Pinehurst #8 was in renovation stage each time I played it so I can't honestly say it was best conditioned. Pinehurst #2 renovation was phenomenal and I too love it. Hated the course prior to the renovation but thought it was great afterwards. And the conditioning each time I played it was immaculate.

Muirfield Village ... my #2 vote. What a course

Royal Melbourne #1 ... was insane. Greens so good (firm and fast) you can run your push carts over them

My vote is Muirfield Village as well. And it may be the leader right now.

Pumpkin Ridge, all the way tee to green.

Sa hah lee, fantastic greens

Eagle Crest, wonderful layout and hard to maintain but they do it.

Coyote Moon, best alpine course I have played.

Bandon Dunes, Rain comes through and it's like it never happened.

I played Bayonet & Black Horse this sping. I asked the sup. how many rounds last season...55k and the course looked and played great.

Lots of votes for Muirfield village. I've watched many tournaments there being an ohio guy and it is immaculate, but how in the world did you get to play that course? Definitely a bucket list worthy course, very jealous!
