for you that have had one, how are they?

Well, I have been having a toothache for a little while now, and I finally decided to tell my parents, and go to the dentist. I went to the dentist yesterday, and he said that I need a root canal. I have never had one, and I would like to know how bad are they? Don't skip the detail or anything, and tell me if you were able to play golf the next day(my appointment is for next saturday, I want to play sunday) I really need to get this done though, I played last weekend with the toothache, and it was a terrible round(but atleast I played, I was happy about that) Please let me know how yours went, and how long it took, and how long the pain lasted. I have had 3 root canals, none of them were painful. Novicane on the first 2 gas on the third one. Each one took about 90 minutes. I had one on a Tuesday morning and played in my league that evening. t might be tender for a day but only if you decide to chew something hard. Usually you end up getting a crown on it. dont worry, it is rather painless.

Piece of cake, rich, you wont feel a thing, it's not as painful as people make it out to be. I had 2 done at the same time, with just local anesthesia. you should be able to golf on sunday, but i dont think it was because of your toothache that you shot terrible, i think it was just you.

:bigwhack: Absolutely the most intense pain I've ever had to deal with. You will be lucky to be able to play anytime at all that week, excruciating pain, terrible. :rolleyes:

 

Naw Rich, I've had 5 or 6 of them, I do admit they can be annoying with rattling that drill around in that tooth but :cheesy: you will survive.

 

With the techniques that dentists use today, you will be surprised at how little pain you have to endure, if any. You may have some tenderness once the novacaine wears off but your dentist will give you some tylenol with a booster. :cheesy:

Yep-- only pain was from the shot! And even that is just a little pinch, really. Don't worry about it... I was as nervous about it as could be, and put off having one on a tooth that was just killing me. All that worry and suffering for nothing! Also, I was given a prescription for a few diazepam (generic valium) to take beforehand, which worked great, almost TOO well. I kept almost falling asleep during it, was totally "out" of it for the most part.

I have had two and I can say that they are no where as new as bad as everyone says. I have had more pain just getting filling. Don't sweat it, you'll be playing on Sunday morning, no problem.

I've had 5. 2 done without anesthesia, other than 1/2-full bottle of Jack on Adak Island in Alaska. Other than those 2, they're fine. The worst part is keeping your mouth open for such a long time.

My wife drove me home and I slept several hours and woke up like nothing ever happened.

should be fairly easy. I did have one that required a specialist...it like corkscrewed...that was no fun!

Rich, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I've had 2 and I couldn't have played golf after one of them. They were two totally different experiences, but it sounds like your situation is more in line with my #2 so that is probably good for you, assuming they work at all the same way.

 

#1. Went for cleaning, had x-ray and was told I needed a root canal to clear an absess. I told them I felt nothing and didnt' think I needed anything. They said it wasn't bad but one day I could wake up with what felt like a bowling ball in my mouth so they HAD to do a RC and soon. A few days later, after taking antibiotics I went in feeling fine. The proceedure was nothing, but the next day that tooth (which remember was fine before) hurt so bad I could barely stand it. The slightest touch felt like being hit with a hammer. That lasted about 4 days and I popped hydrocodine like M&Ms. Aweful!

 

#2 I had a cracked filling that started hurting, then hurt some more (called Dentist and had appointment...got on antibiotics and set RC for a few days later), then started hurting so bad I almost cried. The night before the RC I didn't sleep a wink. Not only had the tooth pain, but had a newborn baby. I stayed up with him as he didn't sleep much being only about 2 weeks old at the time. It was one of the worst nights of my life. I went to the dentist the next morning and had the RC. It wasn't painful and after it was over it was like nothing had ever happened. I was pain free that night and since then.

 

The dentist later told me that it might have been that with #1 my tooth was fine and they tramatized it and that is why it hurt so bad afterwards. #2 the tooth was pretty much dead and so the RC fixed things and killed the pain. Sounds like you're more in line with #2.

 

If you ever want to hear about pain though. Real, aweful, mind blowing pain, then ask anyone about kidney stones. I had them for the first time a month ago and I'd rather have 20 root canals. Wow!!!

#2 sounds exactly what mine is. The dentist said that a cavity was right next to a filling, and instead of going through tooth, it went right into the old cavity, and thus, a root canal is needed, my tooth is dead. it costs about 750 bucks, so that is bad(my parents are union, so we have very good insurance) but I am worried about the pain. the pills he gave me made me sick, and the tylonal #3 with codine didn't work, AT ALL, so I got it changed it to Vicadin, and the pain is gone. I hope it is okay, and what SUCKS is that I have to take a day off of work. I wish I could work and not golf, but the appointment is already sceduled. Thanks guys and keep the info coming.

How did the root canal go?

Well, it went okay. It isn't all the way done. He will finish it(hopefully) Wednesday. What he did was drilled and grinded it down till it was an empty shell of a tooth, and he packed it with antibiotics, and put a temporary cap on it. I hope he finishes Wednesday, I don't want the temp. to fall out.

Do yourself a favor and find an endodontist, and have it done by a specialist. My brother in law is an endodontist, and my sister works in their office. She told me they see a lot of "redos" from regular dentists, and insurance companies won't pay for that. It really is a specialty. I had two done and they were painless, except for a brief pain at the first extraction contact with the exposed nerve. If the nerves in the tooth are totally dead, you won't feel a thing.

 

But please, in your best interest seek out an endodontist.....

I already have had it started, so I think it may be too late. If I do get another one, I will look at my options, tommorow is my second appointment, and hopefully the last.
