Spieth's Secret

scotee

Recommended Posts

At Chambers Bay Jordan said in an interview that he and his caddy had discovered something. He was asked what it was. He said that he would keep that for himself. Paul Azinger mentioned it again in the Thurs. morning broadcast at the British Open. I think it is something process oriented and not a swing thought or technique. More sports phycology than swing mechanics. Whatever it is he has confidence and I think it was brilliant to announce a secret and then leave everyone to guess what it is. I don't think it is necessarily gamesmanship. I think he probably has something but it could be an advantage to keep people guessing as long as he continues to play so well.

I tried to find a link to that interview to post here and in the OP but cannot find it.

He's the best putter on tour. His strengths are strongest the closer you get to the green. Kind of the anti Rory who's strengths are off the tee.
Rory's short game actually ranks higher than Spieth's. The stat "Total Short Game" has Mcilroy and Spieth ranked 2nd and 3rd on tour, respectively.

Really Jordan doesn't do anything particularly great. Not long off the tee, above average iron and short game and one helluva putter.

The only thing I notice is that really separates him from the rest is that he makes the shots and the putts when he needs them. And that he has a winner mentality.

Basically he's like the male version of Inbee Park

not completely right, I've read he's among the best lag putters out there, and when he's on he drops his share of long putts.

Spieth is a throwback to the bygone days. The days when the golf swing was more about feel and timing than mechanics. Spieth impresses me as a young man who owns his own swing, and like Furyk, isn't going to change it to satisfy the swing analysts. His strongest asset is the ability to deal with pressure. And, as I understand it, his caddie's personality is a strong suit for young Spieth. He can keep Spieth on track when he seems to get a little frustrated. I mean it wasn't that long ago he was in high school. Spieth's secret is he is happy in his own skin! It's as simple as that.

his secret isn't really a secret.

he prepares the best way possible for him.
he has confidence in his swing, that is unique to him.
he putts like a complete lunatic.

When you prepare really well, have confidence in what you do and just keep doing it, and putt like a complete lunatic... you will win tournaments.

I agree those things are not a secret but I heard him say that he and his caddy have a secret but are not telling. Did anyone else hear that? It might have been a local Seattle interview. I can't remember.

He's the best putter on tour from over 15 feet, he's actually a subpar putter for tour standards from inside 15' (168th from 4-8', 81st from 10-15 feet), yet he actually rates as the #1 putter overall and he's 8th in strokes-gained.

I think he's a really interesting statistical case, because sinking 20'+ putts is likely not going to be a sustainable skill--there is too much variance involved, and fractions of a percent in strike quality or green quality can send a putt a few degrees off course that will result in burning the edge. However, he is first overall in approach putting, which points to a tremendous feel for the speed of greens. As long as he can keep his feel for green speed, he should remain an excellent putter. But if the bombs stop dropping, he might suffer a pretty significant drop in his results.

I am becoming more of a believer in viewing individual golf tournaments similar to a few weeks or months of a baseball season--that they aren't all that informative in evaluating true skill, but are prone to extreme randomness. Over a long enough career, players will have stretches where everything falls just the way a batter will have ground balls find holes and dying quails drop at a much higher rate than they should. I don't think we have enough data on Spieth to truly know. Certain things, like McIlroy's ability to bomb the ball, are going to hold up over the long haul. But I'm somewhat dubious concerning Spieth's ability to continually make everything he looks at from 25'+.

Small target focus. You can hear his caddy reminding him before almost every shot.

I have a feeling that Sergio Garcia found out about his secret when they were playing together at the Open. There was an incident, when Spieth talked to his ball even more frantically than usual, while the ball was in the air. The ball did exactly, what he wanted and then Sergio said something to Jordan and they both cracked up. I can only imagine that Garcia said something like "So that's why you win so much. Your golf balls actually listen to what you say."

I see a gap. There definitely is a gap.

My guess is his team has done a statistical analysis about his game in a way the movie Moneyball was based on. Using these stats they map out a specific game plan on how to attack a golf course.
I also guess it is something along these lines. They probably also predict the field scores for the day and "plan" his score needed. The lower score he needs the more risk they add to the game plan.

Totally opposite of you-know-who....who always seemed to be smoke and mirrors.

His secrets will come out in TMZ in about 5-10 years when people are looking to tear him back down.

First they put you on a pedestal, then they attack you. Misspeak or make a mistake and they will pounce. Case in point, there are some that are already throwing around the term "choke" for his performance in The Open. Initially, they were getting on his on-course attitude and anger. Many think he grew out of it. Maybe, or maybe it isn't there because he is on a hot streak.

I have not seen a single instance of what I would call excessive "anger" from Spieth this year. I've seen him get mad at a bad shot, but that's golf. He's not throwing clubs and stuff.

Too young.

Give him time. More lost hair, lost majors. Everthing you do on Tweeters.

Already refers to himself as "Jordan".

Be having full conversations with himself soon in the mirror.
