Sticky Situation with unknown extension

Hey guys,

Had a sticky situation come up the other day and It was suggested by a mod that I start this thread. I was wondering how you guys would handle the situation.

I bought a GD BB6X from a member last year. Used the shaft for 3 rounds but was eventually retired to my closet as I moved to a SLDR and this has a titeist tip. I never changed the grip on the shaft since I needed up not using it to long.

Fast forward to a few months ago and I sold the shaft to another member. Great guy and very smooth transaction. He then sent me one of the worst messages you can receive as a seller: I was re gripping the shaft and found a 1 1/4 inch extension.

My attention has turned to the member I bought it from. I checked his original ad for reference, and he made no mention of any extension.

So what am I to do in this situation. I have offered to make things right by the member I sold the shaft to.

I am not sure what I should do about my situation with the original seller. If the member I sold it to asks for a refund, I will refund him.

However when I spoke to the original seller, he had mentioned that it was not disclosed to him either but he does not remember who he got it from. what do I do from here?

Any advice would be great, thanks

See this is a Rule for the BST, that isn't not adhered to 90% of the time. I say all grips must be removed in ads that are selling shafts or ad gets pulled. Weird situation you have here though, long time has passed. Kinda falls on you now as current seller of shaft. Not saying that original seller was right he should have removed grip, as you should have to.

All you can do is eat the costs for you selling shaft that was altered. As you pointed if the guy who sold it to you last year refunds you, then he has to chase the guy who sold it to him the year before etc.

Anyhow if you didn't find the fault in the shaft in a reasonable time after you bought it, then I think you have to let it go.

yeah it's just a very frusterating situation for all parties involved. The original seller doesn't remember who he got it from since he bought it from someone on a different site

It's refreshing that all parties involved are at least understand and realistic about the situation. That being said, timeframe is way too long to go back to original seller, if they are willing to do something they are good people. All that is left is for you to do what you need to do, and it sounds like you have. It's unfortunate but karma will get you back for being good seller.

Been there done that.

Was sold a AD DI 7x, had it installed in a 3 wood head only to find out it has a 2 and half inch extension. Seller offered to take it back but after paying for an install and shipping it just wasn't worth it for me. Used if a few months and hated it and put the whole club away. 4 or 5 months later I send the club to a buddy of mind to pull the shaft and after pulling it we find out the shaft had been tipped 3 inches. Contacted the seller again and he had none of it. At that point I had nothing better to do then change my feedback for him to negative which he then in retaliation gave me negative feedback.

My advice to you, take the shaft back and then sell the shaft for what it's for at the actual real length. Someone out there will want it.

Again why isn't the rule enforced? To bad for the seller if he has to remove grips and to bad for the buyer if he has to buy grips. Eliminates all of this forever. But everyday I see shafts being sold with grips on them.
Many shafts just listed this morning all have grips on them, easy fix to never having this happen to anyone again.

Because it gets argued that certain grips can add value for someone in a sale. Especially these days with shaft adapters where there is no install so really no need to remove the grip for a proper install.

It's pretty easy though, if you have changed the grip yourself and know that there i no extensions, go for it, stand on your word and leave that over priced grip on. If you don't know... cut that grip off and be 10000% sure.

I would say members don't report these ads so mods don't delete them. Either that or mods pick and choose which rules to enforce.

So what would you guys consider the "statue of limitations on a club deal"
I would say 4 weeks after seller receives and leaves positive feedback. But even that is a bit wishy washy and really depends on what the issue is.

Of course sometime you sell an item and then never hear a word from the buyer. After 2 months I would say everyone should be moving on.

Yeah this issue came up about 4 weeks after sale, since I got feedback on June 15th. I haven't heard back from the buyer on what he would like to do yet.

I think how long a deal is valid for will always be somewhat of a controversy

So if you buy a complete club from a member, go to resell it and someone asks for just the shaft; you would recommend cutting the grip off it and selling it that way?

Since at that point it would be sold as a pull

I think the confusion with rule 8 is that the term "pull" doesn't resonate the same way as it did when clubs actually required pulling vs just simply unscrewing the shaft from the head

Wouldn't even consider contacting the original seller.

Are you going to call some guy on Craigslist after a year? Try for a return at a golf store?

For some reason GolfWRX seems to equal 50% discount with 1 day free shipping and lifetime warranty to people. I'm not saying OP is a bad guy, just that the BST and feedback system here has generated a bit of a wierd over compensation-expectation culture that's easy to fall into. Stuff like this is why ads and coupons have paragraphs of small print on them.

Pay the buyer equal to return shipping or cover return shipping and call it a day. 1.25" in an extension is a blip and not worth any more effort.

Yeah I understand, this was my first sale on the site and I wasn't really sure what to do or if there was anything else I should do but offer the buyer to make it right which I have done. The moderators suggested I get some advice from the membership to see what they think.

It's extremely frustrating, but it I guess it's a hard lesson learned

Try to sell a shaft here without a grip, it'll take forever. Buyers either want you to discount it heavily for the purchase of said grip, or they want you to pay for a grip and installation, and yes I've had that asked of me before.

Tough spot OP. I had the same thing last year, bought a shaft in the spring from a respected member with good feedback, played it for a while, then moved on to something else and put it in the backup bag. Went to sell it this year but wanted to keep the grip, only to find another fairway shaft stuffed in it as an extension. I didn't contact the seller, I just chalked it up as a loss and a learning experience on my part no to be too trusting around here. If I had to do it all over again I probably would have messaged the seller to explain my displeasure, not asking for money, and just leave it at that. My assumption is they wouldn't do anything as they didn't do the right thing the first time around, but at least they'd be notified. I'd suggest you do that.

I have sold shafts here without grips. Again I say if you can't afford a grip you apparently shouldn't be buying a $200 shaft. Very simple fix to never having this problem. And if this rule is enforced then eventually shafts without grips will be the norm around here and they will sell for the amount asked without grip.

And yes I believe shafts with adapters are pulls, anytime you sell shaft without the head I'd consider it a pull. As drivers have changed, terminology about what a pull is has as well.

If making an extra $5 bucks cause someone needs to sell a shaft with the grip on cause they don't think it'll sell, then stop buying and selling cause you can't afford this hobby.

That's what I did, I sent him a message letting him know the situation that has arose with the shaft. I also asked to see if he knew about the extension, he said " no" and that's pretty much where we left it

OK we know how you feel. Saying the same argument 5 times doesn't make it any more or less valid.

I think the problem is that a lot of times the sellers don't know it either. I mean how many times have you bought a shaft and not changed grips? Then resold it. If the extension is done properly and no more than an inch or so it doesn't effect a thing. So no way to know with a grip on it.

I always change grips after I buy a shaft. If I am dropping 200 bucks on a pull out shaft I can live with loosing a 5 dollar grip. I want to know I am getting what I paid for.
