Likes @1985 Playing first position varsity golf now. For some reason I instantly remember the bus ride to play a match at Rock Hill Golf in NY. Probably the prettiest ride and course I remember up until that time. Played a big hulking senior that absolutely pounded that ball, even for that time. Tried to out hit him early, did NOT work. Regrouped after hole 5 or 6. Realized hitting first was a big advantage if I can stick it tight after he airmailed me by 20/30 yards on the drive. By the turn had him on the ropes and he crumbled.

Ha! My golf memories started when I was old enough to qualify for the Champions Tour. :-)

Likes @1986 now.

16/17 years old, dropped out of High School to go on tour/on the road playing golf. Home life was really bad, figured I'd rather die on the road than at home. Got hooked up with kind of a charlatan, promised the world, barely delivered dinner. But made some money, made some connections that would pay off later and above all, i was out there doing it on my own....looking forward instead of back for the first time in my life.

@ Year 1987 (In Likes)...

A smile is worth a thousand bucks.

Playing in a low level "pro" tourny, west coast. Got a two shot lead with two to go. Wedge one to inside 10 feet, guy in second hits one on a string but it takes a big bounce, rolls 20-30 feet by. Figure I got this one in the bag, easy money. Don't know why.... but just before he hits his putt, he looks up and me and smiles. He looks back down a hammers it right into the back of the cup. My heart stops for a second... I miss my 7' footer and I'm now just up by one. We tee off and I'm away just barely. I really want him to hit first but he concedes to me. I hit one decent, maybe to 20 feet. I don't look at his shot...I imagine him making that stupid little grin at me. He hits and I look up, he sticks it 5' at most. s***.

Got a fast, breaking down hill'er... Soooo trying my best to not make eye contact with this guy. Line up my putt and it's dead online.... I'm walking it in, hell ya baby! Daddys eatin' steak tonight. Breaks hard right at the hole and rolls by 6 feet. SOB.

Still not looking, he lines it up, putts and I hear the clink of his ball hittin' the bottom of the cup. I need the up hill come backer for the tie.... I leave it an inch short.

We shake hands and I get that F-ing damn smile again, it takes everything in my power to not punch this guys lights out even though he did 'nothing' really.

Learned a big lesson about getting into peoples heads that day.

*Funny the thing you remember. :)

Year 1991 (In Likes)

Just moved south from NY to be able to play year round with somewhat less traveling. My initial memory from that year was signing my first real 'lease' on an apartment just blocks from the beach. It so exhausting on the road, packing and unpacking but you never really do either, looking to food and laundry, it's a constant grind before you ever get to the course. I remember thinking it would be cool if I could just stay here all the time...

Then they asked for the Deposit/First/Last rent check...

Wiped out my bank account in a few strokes of a pen...

I guess I won't have to fully unpack today either...

Year 1996 (In Likes)

Hmm... Not really a golf memory.

Step dad (who almost killed me as a child) is in real bad health. Kinda want him to to be in pain some more but he's also the primary income for my Mother and younger brother. Probably the toughest decision in life so far. Cut my golf schedule down to almost nothing, move back near home, dump my savings into the family so they don't lose everything. I gotta make sure my siblings have a better chance than I did. And then I guess Mom is still Mom. Seems like I'm always giving and not so much getting in return. I really hoping lady karma is taking notes...

I used to play gigs with the trumpet player from Blood, Sweat, and Tears. I wasn't allowed to like Chicago, the band, because there was competition, or something. Later, when I lived near Chicago itself, I learned not to like the real Chicago either. Better traffic than Boston though. Better horn section, too.

@1967... use Stepfather's knife to cut golf ball open, friend says there is big long rubber band inside...sure enough cover comes off but cut too much and rubber band starts going crazy, big glob of rubber band. Stepfather comes home, I put the knife back so he won't know, run and flush rubber band glob down the toilet... well...now problem is more complicated, should have let well enough alone.

.. my brother was first to like it :)

Then you remember the liquid center and how easy to find golf balls with cuts all over. We used those for our experiments.

Hmmm.

At 1553 likes, didn't really notice but for this thread. Tough to relate to that year.

Interestingly, Mary I ("Bloody Mary") ascended to the throne on this very day in 1553.

In 1553 citizens rights to play golf were confirmed by Archbishop Hamilton of St. Andrews!

So, some pretty cool stuff learned.

As for the shower, my wife gets suspicious if I'm in there too long, so no time for thoughts.

What's that, 32? Settled in CFL for a bit, working the minis down here....they pretty much suck, kinda costly, not a great payout unless you're top 3.

Hmmm, this is harder than I remember it being....

Wait, WTF am I looking at.....Is that the WTC on fire? Spent three days on the phone with friends and family and then an 18 hour drive back to NYC. I can still smell the smoke and there are some images that are stuck in my mind forever.

Hard to believe I was just complaining about playing golf for a living....what a d!ck.

off by a couple few years from your initial post, but whenever i think of 'the past' this tends to be the song playing in the background.

love the recollections. my golf memories don't exist before 1997 (when i picked up the game), but most of the ones i have from those early years are ones of joy.

1987(27yo)....Sitting on the glass at "Top of The Triangle" bar/restaurant on the top floor of USX(Steel) Tower with two Gents who believed in me as much as I did myself and put the capital up for my first business...We had a 5-Year payback plan...I payed em off in two...HaHa, you stand in front of me, you better be ready to play Bro...,

Our Song was "Take it Easy" by the Eagles...And. Lord knows, a few wanted to own me, and a few wanted to stone me, haha.."We may lose and we may win, but we will never be here again"...Thank God Bro, cuz a few had big stones, lmao.....

Yep, We had the world by the balls.....

2007....My My My, what a difference a few years make....A few businesses and a lotta rounds later....A lot of Incredible memories and a few bad ones later, I'm sitting in one of those sterile white hospital based exam rooms waiting for a man who I didn't know to walk through the door and give me the verdict on my first set of blood tests(cancer)....I'm trying to tell myself that only I hold the keys to my future but as He walks through the door, I realize that I'm full of s***.......

2012.....Well, Well, Well.....Though 2012 was a great year, what with turning back the clock with my golf Game, winning a Few nice Tourneys and choking away a fourth while kneeling over my ball on the 18th with a vanilla 3' putt to hand my Mixed Pro/Am BB Partner a $5,000 check and us a trip to Vegas for Nationals and past the hole she stood, so Amazing, so Beautiful and she could hit 250yd ropes to boot.....I was in Love....I missed the damn puttt...Turns out, she didn't care, she Loved me too....Where have the years gone?....

2015....I really can't tell ya where the years went...I'm back in another sterile white exam room, awaiting another faceless messenger with a message I don't wanna hear....She still Loves me.....Sometimes I ask what I did do to end up in this room, needles in my arm, this s*** running through my veins, trying to kill these itty bitty cells that that doctor told me that it was a total fluke that they landed in my body...Yea, that made me feel better ;)....What a dick.....I cry more now....But I laugh more too...I appreciate things more...Maybe it's the meds...Maybe it's Mr. Hogan's thoughts about walkin this fairway one time hittin home...Regardless, I've always played the Game down & out but I got a couple of mulligans in life and damn if I didn't rope em, lol...HaHa, I got a new mantra Bro- "Two Swings-One Win"....And yep, She still Loves me...I realize that maybe I wasn't as good as I thought myself to be...Maybe I was Just lucky.....

Then I think back to what Pete always said....

The average don't get lucky....not under pressure...not when it's one shot-one win...

One shot-one win, hahaha...I remember when Pete first told me that in 1981(He probably told me that earlier, however my memory's foggy, lol...It could be these meds...It could be the years...or hell, maybe that was the first time that he told me ;) )...That became my mantra...For the Game...For Life...Hell, I had it inked on my arm, lol...My poor Mother thought I'd gone to the dark side, lmao...In the D huddle against Mich St., they had a 4th & 2 on our 2 with 9 seconds left, down by 5...I already knew what I was doin regardless of the play called and I leaned in, got my teammates attention and said, "one shot-one win"...D-Dog, a black CB from Detroit, a Blood BTW, along with bein roommate and great friend, asked as we broke the the huddle where I'd gotten that saying as he Loved it, and I said "Golf," & took my position with Double D behind me...as the O came to the line, DD yelled, "I hate golf" and the WR looked at us like we were crazy, lmao...Next thing I remember, I'm layin on top of their QB on the 9, game over with DD over me screamin, "I effin love Golf"....One Shot-One Win...Welcome to my world.....

BTW, this chair is my "shower"..........

I am lucky though....She still Loves me, and Lord knows, I don't make it easy, hahaha

I still don't know where in the hell those damn years went....

And I still think too damn much....

Thanks for the thread Bro!

And Thanks for a lot of great exchanges :)

God Bless

Fairways & Greens My Friends,
Richard
