Azinger - "You couldn't pay me a million dollars a day to wear soft spikes."

Most soft spike designs are so good nowadays there really is no slip to them. Freak incident for Zack as ground was really soft and that could've happened with metal spikes. Just in my personal experience I have no slip issues with soft spikes.

Uhh. Fellas......

We didn't go to soft spikes because of wear and tear on the course.

Everyone got tired of replacing the carpet in the Pro Shop, Men's Grill, Locker Room and other places in the club house.

Agree. Spikes actually do less damage to greens. Soft spike shoes leave huge indents in soft greens that are hard to putt across.

No, seriously. Anyone want to pay me a million dollars to wear SoftSpikes?

I have seen people tear up greens with soft spikes and metal spikes. Some people insist on turning on the balls of their feet, instead of lifting their feet. There is one PITA friend of mine that we all have to keep reminding every (holler at) time we play.

I go back and forth about them. Soft spikes are more comfortable, but I sense a better grip with metal in most situations.

The norwegian commentator said it was because of back pains people changed away from them
OR knee and hip pain.

I wear Adidas Adicross shoes with soft spikes and very aggressive soles and I can't ever remember my flat soled metal spiked shoes of yesteryear providing more traction on wet turf.

I'd wear stillhetos, a mankini and a gimp mask for nothing if it meant just playing one Open. You don't want to know what I'd do for a million bucks.

Have played soft spikes/spike-less shoes for years in all types of conditions including steady rain and have had no problem slipping.

I'd just bought a set of indestructible permanent ceramic spiked shoes when the change happened. The greens improved immensely. Not that you can't walk on greens without tearing them up, but the general public can't.

The new shoe designs rather than the soft spikes themselves are providing the grip. They tear up greens as well, but we've mostly converted to Bermuda around here. Much tougher stuff.

We used to replace the carpet in the bar about every three years. Which really wasn't a bad thing. The Ladies of our club got involved and we'd get some new paint and a general change in decor made it feel like you were drinking in a new pub......

Now we've had the same carpet for 10 years and it will probably look the same in another 10.

Personally I miss the nails. Something about strapping on the spikes meant it was time to play. Now it's almost like I could either play golf or go to a cross fit class.

(Of course there are very few double bogeys at a cross fit class)

I've never encountered slipping problems due to my soft spike shoes. Of course, I can't compare to metal spikes, as I've never, ever worn them. I played in Myrtle last fall, and it rained straight for three days. Every drive plugged in the fairway, everything was soaked. I had no issues swinging, and keeping my feet planted.
This the truth behind why soft spikes were pushed so hard. First generation of soft spikes were terrible, today not so bad but would gladly go back to spikes. Big advantage.

I vaguely remember metal spikes as a kid , but honestly I can't remember ever slipping with soft spikes , hell I sometimes practice in running shoes and never slip ... I guess I'm not swinging hard enough (or playing when its wet enough )

Metal spikes = better, healthier, constantly aerated greens.

Soft spikes are being enforced at courses to keep them from having to replace their clubhouse carpets every year.

Truth.
As a golf professional, I can tell you that's false. It has nothing to do with our clubhouse and everything to do with not wanting to hear our members & customers complain about spike marks around the hole. That, and the fact that they're unnecessary for 99.9999% of golfers.

I would go back to metal spikes in heartbeat....the proper swing is created from ground with legs and core...and no one creates a perfect balanced swing everytime....recreational golfers rarely swing in balance,lol....like saying if baseball player would just run with perfect balance he wouldn't need spikes....or if you made perfect swings you wouldn't need forgiveness in your irons....the whole game of golf is based off your miss, how many and how bad your mishits are......not your perfect swing or strike....

Soft spikes have come along away since their beginning for sure

I actually think softspikes create more of an impression on green then metal ones ever did....metal spikes just punch a small hole in turf....soft spikes leave an impression of whole spike in ground with 4 or 5 little holes on every spike......I think greens are more bumpy with soft spikes than metal.....provided golfer walks properly on green.....all I see when I walk up to green is a bunch of round impressions from soft spikes all over and around the hole.....also if mini golf courses kept their greens firm on reg basis instead of 8 or 9 on stimp that would help alleviate the impressions......

As far as comfort the old shoes sucked compared to today's shoes.....modern shoe with metal wouldn't even be an issue....or maybe even a spike with hard plastic instead of metal.....

and if you are a golf pro and say that the carpet isnt the reason. then your arent that old a golf pro. 35 years ago, you would walk into the pro shop and the carpet, would be all spiked up. YOU DIDNT see hardwood floors. the first golf spikes sucked pure D sucked. New ones are OK. just make them last as long as metal ones did.

I do like metal spikes whether it be golf or baseball. They did give better traction.

Let's just please not talk about them providing aeration to greens. Unless I was wearing different spikes from everyone else penetrating into the green 8mm or about 1/3 in. does nothing to lessen compaction of soils. Even micro-tining is 1" - 1-1/2" depth.

Like I said, metal spikes are banned at my club because it DOES make the greens bumpier around the hole, and they're dangerous on wet pavement. I understand alot of guys who have used them in the past think they're better ("the glory days"), but there is a reason so many PGA Tour players use soft spikes or spikeless shoes. I would venture to say a lot of metal spike amateurs have a bit of an ego lol

The reason metal spike tear up greens (other than foot draggers) was the length of the metal
spikes. When I was a kid, the only time you ever say spike marks was when somebody either
got new spikes, or new shoes. It was almost impossible to not leave marks with new spikes. After
a few rounds of walking, the spikes would dull, and wear down. 10 rounds in, you wouldn't leave any marks
unless you were careless.
Then some genius developed carbite tips for spikes, and they NEVER wore down, and every green started
to look like a little mini forest around the cup.
In a previous life, when i was still playing, I used 1/2 length metal spikes which were provided as an
option. Never left spike marks, and in my experience, provided MUCH better stability than soft spikes
and did less damage to the greens. Those nickel size dents caused by soft spikes or the tracks left by
Trues are worse than worn/short spikes in old FJ Classics.
And if you really think the change wasn't for carpets and flooring at clubs, I have
some old square groove clubs to sell you! :)
