Can you win your club championship?

Recommended Posts

i won the stroke play CC back in 1976 shooting 68/67. Made the finals in match play 2 times in the 1990s and lost 2 and 1 both times.

Age and injuries am not competitive anymore. Best finish I had in a medal play event recently was runner up shooting 68 in 2014. Broke my ankle in 2015 and am still having issues. I have had too many slow starts and shoot a lot of 72 to 75 rounds. My short game keeps me respectable. I need hard fast conditions these days to get distance off the tee.

Apparently not. I've been in the final 4some twice and puked.

Around these parts -- Greenville SC -- the feeling among my golf buddies (all of us 2 to 5 handicaps) is to not even bother. Heck, there are Division 1 college players at most of the clubs, and the one older guy who won a club championship across town at the "ritzy" club also qualified for the U.S. Senior Open (not the Senior Am but the Senior OPEN!) Maybe it's the good weather....or maybe Clemson's Dabo Swinney fires up the entire Greenville citizenry regardless of the sport, but man there are so many good players around here that I feel honored if I get chosen as "B player" for a team at the Goat Ropers Benefit Scramble.

Two years ago, I made an 8 on the last hole to lose by one shot. This year I was able to win with rounds of 71, 72 in really windy conditions. Felt good to get back on top!

I think so, but it would require me to not be a headcase over the span of two rounds, which is unlikely.

3 years ago when our club championship came around I didn't even sign up, I had not been playing well and had not shot a decent score in a month. 2 days before the deadline my wife informs me she is going to the beach for the weekend with her sister, so I start looking for people to play over the weekend, no one available there all signed up for the CC. So I call the course and sign up with no expectations. I was a 9 at the time so I was in the first flight, 2 days of stroke play, after day 1 I was one shot out of the lead with a 74 and after day 2 I was the new club champion with a 75. So you just never know when lightning will strike

I read somewhere years ago, that PGA Tour Commissioner, Deane Beman's biggest disappointment in golf was never winning his club championship. He won 4 times on tour as a player but he never could win that club championship and it just killed him. I think if you are a member of a club, then you should have that same feeling and always play and always try to win your club championship....no matter what level or flight. I think you find out a lot about yourself and your game when you really have to grind out a couple stroke play rounds against competition.

My club has a gross and a net division and I don't have the game anymore to compete gross. But two years ago, I decided to really practice hard for 3 weeks prior and try to win the net. I'll be damned if my 7 handicap didn't win with a pair of net 69's. (luckily, most of the sandbaggers at my club are in the senior division). But working on my game hard and shooting that pair of 76s was super gratifying. Coming down the stretch under pressure with several other players that could still win was a lot of fun. I made an ungodly up and down out of a bunker on 17 that I can still close my eyes and see clear as day. The expression on my 3 fellow competitors faces when the putt went in was worth all the practice and effort. It's the most fun I've had on a golf course in the last 15 years.

So now I've continued to work on my game. Handicap fluctuates between 5-6 and I want to compete in the gross division again. I'm not sure if I can win. The planets would all have to line up perfectly. But I want that feeling of competing against the best players again. I want to see what my game and my mentality is made of.

I'm still working on my nerves or shots expectation. I can shoot par or under at my club but every time i play in the tournament I play like a 10 handicapper. Betting also provide me with similar result. I can't seem to get out of my way in this kinds of situations. I envy the 14 handicappers who can break 80 in tournament. I don't know what they are drinking but I want some.

I'm actually trying to change my thought process this year. My CC is 54 holes of stroke play, and my game isn't consistent enough to hang with the top players for three days. For the next few years, I'm actually going to try thinking of each round of my CC as a separate tournament. My goal is going to be to shoot the lowest round on one of the days. If I ever manage that, I'll start raising the bar on my expectations ...

My home course is a decent muni. In addition to the "real" members, they offered a cheap 2 year limited membership for their 100yr anniversary. Basically brought in a ton of money from the hackers who wouldn't have ever had a membership otherwise. But they did a Club Championship for the 2 year members only last year. I ended up in 3rd but got destroyed by the winner who is a +2 handicap and the brother of the club pro. This year, he became a "real" member so will no longer be in my championship. While it's not the same qualify of players, I'm still looking forward to playing it this year with at least a chance of winning based on last year's participants.

Not a chance. I am a mid HC player. Gross is beyond my skill at this point and sandbaggers have net locked up tight. You need to shoot a 56-61 net both days to compete. I have too much pride to play the sandbagger game.

does anyones club championship have a cool trophy, if so, I'd love to see it.

Look up the new Ax trophy made my Tyson Lamb for Trinity Forest golf club in Dallas. It is INSANE.

Can't win the championship flight, which the club champion is determined from. But we also flight it, so at least have a change to compete and win my flight.

This is my 5th year playing in the Club Championship. When I first joined I was an 18 handicap, and in my third year I was down to a 12, and 3 putted for par on 18 to lose by 1 in my flight. year before last I shot a 76 and was only 4 shots off the lead. I proceeded to have a meltdown on the 2nd day. This year, I feel my game is inching closer to having a chance. More than likely, Even par for the two days will be close to winning. I truly feel I have a shot this year, and I miss the feeling of that Saturday night being in contention and knowing I have a shot if I play well on Sunday. I want that feeling again. 9 Weeks and counting!
