I lived in manhattan less than a mile from the towers. I looked down University Place every day and they were there. When I went to grab a bite, shopping, just every day, they were there.

That morning, I saw them burn on TV then I wlked down the block and watched them collapse.

There were thousands of people walking up Broadway that morning, right by my window. Walking nowhere, nowhere to go, city was locked down, many people you knew were gone, you were waiting to find out who.

For a week, downtown smelled like burnt cinder, plastic, hell. We were breathing in the death for days.

I looked down University Place and those towers were gone. Just empty space. I would look down there and see the people burning in my minds eye every time I looked down in that direction for a very long time.

Thank you for sharing your story, bsc. I could imagine the horror and disbelief of actually being there. One of my good buddies' wife is from the city. Her uncle worked, I believe, firehouse #2. Their company was one of the first on the scene. He went down in Tower #1. O'Callahan was his name. I've never been down there but I'm sure his name is there.

Wow, seeing that live right in front of you....can't imagine how surreal and
heartbreaking.

I was 1000s of miles away, in Nevada, and that morning my wife woke me up
in the truck to tell me one of our best friends had just died, at age 51, from a
massive heart attack.......then seemed only a few hours later her daughter called
and asked if we had heard the news. What news?

And then we found out what happened and pulled into a truckstop and saw it
replayed on TV.

A day we will not forget.

Brandy and I stay in touch. We've always been pretty close. I wasn't Joe in that movie. I was a stunt double for the horse she rode.

Rad - Go three days without any fiber in your diet. You'll lose ten pounds and stripe the highway at the same time.

Matt - nice going helping a fellow golfer. Next time get a couple of bucks out of him, This freebee crap will drive you in the poor house quick. You end up giving weight loss advice.

Scotee - I was an official Estes rocketeer growing up. Charred that little silver plate on the bottom of the launch pad. I bet you were into that too. (Or not in which case I get to edit and edit.

Mdg - Do me a favor if you would. If two guys in this thread start calling each other girl names all night long again, would you get them a room?
Is being hung like a horse detrimental to the golf swing? I'd ask Rad but ol' Pencil wouldn't know :).

And don't be hater, Alice!! ;);)
It makes it harder to goat hump. The inertia of the mass keeps you down low. ;)
Rad that is about as bad as the old road jokes about the Chicken Haulers and the dying quivvers
Never heard those jokes and cannot even imagine.......... men and chickens :shok:

Had a really cool start to the day. Arrived to the course at 7:45 and was greeted by the course owner at the door to the club house. He said (in a rather stern voice) " I need to speak to you". I responded, " what did I do now?" I followed him into the clubhouse and he directed my eyes to a sign that informed good ol' PD that he had won a free yearly membership for the 2016 season. I bought raffle tickets to support the owner's 6 year grandson's hockey team and I won the top prize. The entire ground's crew congratulated me as I played my round. Pretty cool way to celebrate 'hump day". Then I went back to school to set up my classroom for the year. The agony and ecstasy.

I have more to contribute but my son has commandeered my computer.

Well done Scotee, CP7 is alive and well.
Well, congrats brah! How cool is that?! You were due for some good news.

Stu we must be the same age. Then it was live on TV when Oswald got dusted. I was sitting there watching it. If you remember, back then a lot of cars and homes didn't have air-conditioning. Seat belts were new and I believe at the time still optional. You could fix your own TV with tubes unless the picture tube was shot. Three channels if dad went outside and turned the antenna the right way. Dad had some sort of little throw switch on the wall near the TV - like a mini version of that switch they throw on an electric chair. He could move that up or down and we got some channels better than others without having to go outside.

Then it was troll dolls, pet rocks, clackers, tin-can tennis ball cannons, giving a football cleat on a string to your gal. School's would whack your arse with the big paddle with holes in it if you crossed the line. Putting a balloon in or baseball card on the spokes of the bike to make it sound like motorcycle. A banana seat and a sissy bar on the bikes of the cool kids. Mom would save up S&H green stamps and buy stuff. A pressure cooker than made the worst food east of the Mississippi. (Mom was a lousy cook). Records that cracked if you dropped them available in 33 and 45 rpm. Cars that "dieseled"...kept sputtering after turning the ignition key off. Milk was sold in a glass gallon jug. Ice cream came in three flavors - chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. Guys fought because..,,. just because. Gumby and Pokey got a run for their money from silly putty, the super ball, and GI Joe. Matchbox cars. HO scale train sets and race tracks. An erector set. Lincoln logs,

And... the buddies who had all this cool stuff who asked you to come over to play. (S & H Green stamps only went so far you know)...
Disney should have had you as the narrator on the "Carousel of Progress" ride. :)

I remember how we were so amazed at the progress from the 1920s to the 1960s.
People would laugh today at the things we were amazed by.

I used to fantasize about people from the past being suddenly put in today's world
and wonder how amazed they would....or would not be, lol. Imagine handing Thomas
Jefferson a cell phone and bringing up the Declaration of Independence on it and
showing it to him. Seemingly endless things you could do for fun!

Sorry I've been incommunicado, lots of stuff been happening. Judge feel free to whack my peepee. Just plowed through 12 pages of CP6 and CP7, and I think I'm now blind(er) Just to summarize:

Got terminated by my nefarious company
Got 3 months severance plus vaca pay
Got picked up a week later by a better company but deferred my start date to take a mental break
Presently coming to the end of a heavenly extended vacation that consisted of visiting my old folks, golfing, chores, taking my step daughter to tournaments, and more golfing
After 30 yrs of golf, developed a case of short game sh**ks, having never experienced them before
Scored well in my club champ qualifier, and then sh**ked myself out of my first round match
Had the pleasure to watch my stepdaughter pick up the trophy for women's club champ at a course that's not our home course (she is a junior member at this course)
Had the pleasure of meeting Stephen Kay at the awards dinner. He told my daughter what I have been telling her for a while - short game, short game short game.

So, over all life is good! Except the sh**ks. But, this is the first time I have ever been totally ???? about an aspect of golf. It's always been, OK I need to stop pulling, I need to stop rushing/casting from the top, etc, very fixable and understandable things. This is an entirely different kind of problem, and I'm actually looking forward to see how I solve it. In the past I have heard a lot of testimony from golfers who had the sh**ks, and always thought, 'how can you consistently sh**k a little half swing chip shot?'. Well, now I know.

I'll keep in touch..
Good to hear from you, thug.

First off, congrats to your daughter. I remember how excited you all were when she got to play with the LPGA pro. I think that's correct. Forgive me if I don't recall who she was paired with.

Also, I thought you'd mentioned that you weren't crazy about the people you worked for so that seems to have worked out with time to catch up on things, golf and spend some quality time with your loved ones.

Had the short game shanks a few years back. This was after I had the full swing shanks and got past them. I worked them out. You will too, bro. They still pop up know and then. I laugh and move on, except that one time when I broke my 6 iron. OOPS. LMAO. :)

Take care.
Thanks MC! I can't help but think I might be getting some parts of the eight fold path right, because everything just fell into place; got rid of my @$#!&!$ managers, got some serious cash, got some really needed time off, and I will be starting with really solid company that is smaller but rising in my field.

Yeah my step daughter recovered really well from her first encounter with swing problems. She went through her first 4 yrs of golf just pulling it back and hitting the ball, then at the LPGA pro-am she started push fading her driver and long/mid irons. Now she is back to crushing shots, with even more distance. Almost scary long. Just, her short game has lagged behind, mainly because she is not going through the pre-shot preparation required. We will get her on track with that.

Meanwhile, it's my turn to take care of that short game. I'm actually looking forward to the challenge.
Wow, sounds like you ended up having a great summer Thug!

Glad to hear the job news. I remember how unhappy you were at the other
job.

Maybe you should buy some lotto tickets while you're on a roll. :)

So PD wins the big prize at his course. I agree with Rad. Good to see good guys actually can finish on top sometimes.

BSC.... Some pain never fades. Poignant description of that day you shared. As much so as I've ever heard it. Will come back to that day one more time at the end of this post.

Thug - as MC pointed out - you haven't sounded happy with work for quite a while. Here's to new beginnings and the end of that other madness. Many would love to transition the way you did. Most have things thrust upon them and it takes a long time for them to recover.

Pige - Just don't put yourself in a position of having to chew your arm off - LOL. (see coyote ugly)

911 -- Its odd what a role it played in nearly destroying my family's financial life... and yet because we were not there in the building or close by... and because we knew no one personally who died in that madness.... I've never felt OK about describing just how deeply it hurt us. We suffered because of it... but we didn't suffer like other's did. You come out of some things in life feeling like you're whining about a splinter in your butt while the person next to you is starving to death. Amazing (edit: how) no matter how good or bad things are going... you could always be one step higher or lower on the ladder.

Was on the bus coming home from school when Maz hit the homer to win the series.
Was in 9th grade gym class when Kennedy was shot. Watched Oswald shot live.
Was driving to summer job at J&L Steel in Aliquippa when heard Bobby K was shot that night.
Didn't see the moon landing cause I was working the 11-7 shift in the wire mill at J&L as another summer job.
In my dorm room in Tower B at Pitt when King was shot - watched Pittsburgh HIll district burn, curfew, liquor stores closed, no gas in containers, national guard on campus patrolling at night in jeeps, tanks in Pitt stadium.
Had just retired in July and hadn't figured out what to do next, when sitting in my family room on a brilliant sunny September morning I watched everything unfold.
On a freezing, snowy day on January 18, 1976 I was at a Super Bowl party in the apartment with about a half dozen young women, Steelers winning was the 2nd best birthday present that day.

Ah, the memories.

We are like butterflies that flutter for a day and think it is forever

Sealed with a curse as sharp as a knife.  Doomed is your soul and damned is your life.
Enjoy every sandwich

The first rule of the Dunning-Kruger club is that you don’t know you are a member.   The second rule is that we’re all members from time to time.

It's another beautiful day at the Red Pony Bar and continual soirée.

I don't know why we were gome from school that day, January 28th, 1986, but I remember distinctly where I was standing when it happened.

We most be similar in age, PD, I had just turned 10, well, I guess that probably means I'm actually a few years older than you :)

It was a big deal for kids that were my age because we had studied the space program and all of our teachers had applied to be on that plane. One teacher from my school actually made the final group of interviews with Christie McAuliffe.

The Trade Towers attack occurred while I was living in Colorado in mountain standard time. I had been out at the bar and slept in and woke up about the moment it happened. I always drink coffee and read my emails first thing when I get up and looked at Yahoo!'s home screen and the first tower had just been hit and was smoking a little from one side. I actually thought it was photoshopped and the caption was going to be something like, "are you ready for an attack on American soil?"

Turned the t.v. on in the other room and watched the second plane hit. I was just numb for two or three days. A roommate from college grew up just outside the city in Fairfield, CT. His family and friends would come down and visit sometimes for a big football game. One of those friends was in the tower. That was an interesting thing about that attack. It was truly an attack on NYC not the USA. It much more deeply effected folks like bscinstinct who lived near ground zero. It just baffles me why anyone would want their legacy to be hurting that many innocent people. Maybe I just don't believe in anything, but I could never put a personal value above the welfare of other people. The only reason I could imagine hurting someone is if they hurt my friends or family. Most of the time I can forgive that too.

Its not explainable Matt. Eternal life rewarded to a martyr is evidently the motivation and we were an easy target. There's a reason the Judge is not in office. And if he were they would NEVER trust him with the football. Wouldn't have lost a moment's sleep over it. Nuff said.

We talk food here now and then,,,,Ya know how with just a touch of a button you can burn toast? Don't ya just hate it when that happens? There it was - a perfectly good piece of toast just roasted into a cinder. Darn shame. Could keep you up all night worrying about it if you let it. Wonder if there is a way to repurpose burnt toast? Maybe convert it to asphalt for parking lots - or use it make shoe soles or something. Hmmm.... could be patentable.

Hey -- any predictions on the Fed Ex cup here? Any distant runners you're pulling for?

Hey Judge, yes I did OK in retrospect. But it was barely worth all the stress and angst leading up to the separation. I now see clearly that their strategy was to beat the employee up on the front end to gain leverage, and then give them a good separation package contingent upon signing a waiver agreement on the back end to shut them up. I just don't understand why they couldn't be more up front and be honest with all of us instead of veiling the termination with performance issues.

Anyway, these may be first world problems, but my health (and especially my liver) did suffer some damage, but I'm on the road to recovery. Now to tackle the shanks!

I'm clueless on the Fedex Cup. Look what Billy did last year. I would guess
one of these; Day, Mcilroy, Spieth and Watson......but that's just too easy to
pick one of them, isn't it? But who else are you gonna pick?

Sergio has gotten much better. At least now he takes the blame when he

Ian had a weekly radio show on PGA Tour radio for awhile. It was
called "unfiltered". He's actually a pretty decent guy but his show was
beyond dull. He's only good when he is "responding", not so good
when he has to come up with stuff to talk about. He has a lot of kids
though and seems like a great father and husband so props for that!

Henrik Stenson had a show, too, and it was boring as he**, lol.

Trial and Error!

Rich Beem had a show and he was great; very entertaining...but he
now has a gig with Sky Sports and gave up the radio show to do it.

Fred Couples radio show was boring too..............

Some guys have it and some don't. PGA Tour radio is just throwing sh**
at the wall to see what sticks, lol. It's always changing.

Just never know who they'll put on radio next. Many names I could
mention they have tried but it's too much. Some make it and some don't
and has nothing to do with their golf skills, hehe

Does anyone here care about the anchoring ban starting in Jan?

I don't. I've never tried anchoring and no one I play with uses it but
I wouldn't care if they did anyway. For recreational golf, I say screw
the USGA. Some guys get a little unsteady as they get older and
being able to anchor helps them to keep playing and making putts
and not getting frustrated with yippy jerky putting strokes.

I see no harm in that at all. I wouldn't want to see those guys give
up the game. They'll get no grief from me.
I actually putted with a broomstick Ping for a couple of years. I was having putting problems then and that is about the time I threw my beloved Zing 2 in a lake. Actually putted really good with it but there was no total utilitizing of my game with it. In other words I could not hit my little hop skip release off the green with it and other shots I use a putter for off the green. That was all tied in to that period when I had a "golf coach" Because I used the arc method of putting he told me I had a flaw in my putting stroke and had me doing the straight through forward thing. Got my mind so screwed up I could not putt a lick. One day I was out at the range and my other instructor buddy was giving a lesson to a guy and had this training thing on the green stuck down with tees. It was an arc putting trainer. After he finished with his customer I asked him what is that. He told me an arc training tool. I was perplexed and told him I putted like that all my life and was told I had a flaw in my stroke. He said I can only guess who told you that your stroke was flawed. He asked if I wanted to borrow the training tool. I said no but let me use one of your conventional putters for a few. I went back then and there that day never went back to the broomstick even though I still have it in the closet.
As far as someone using one pro or amateur I have absolutely no problem with it. We have quite a few retirees with back problems down here that anchor putt either in the sternum or belly. In fact quite a few Men's Golf Associations down here have made a local rule making them legal for comps in their respective associations.

Never played an anchored putter so I personally don't care either way. Here is the ONLY thing about it that bugs me a little as a golf fan....a) I think its a little harsh for the Champions tour guys who's eye and steady hands may not quite be what they once were. They should have been given a pass in my book. b) A medical exemption or extension should have been taken into account for Tim Clark. I'm not a big follower of his but I have no issues with him at all. The fact is his arms won't work like the rest of us. Now if Tim himself can adapt then great but if it turns out in his case this ruins his career - then as far as I'm concerned the rules people missed an opportunity to grandfather in anyone who has a medical issue with the change. and c)....

I'm on record as FOR bifurcation of rules. It happens anyway...Sunday golfers rolls the ball, never go all the way back to the tee, yadda yadda. BUT there should be IMO, a set of rules governing square grooves, long putters, what rules are to be followed in establishment of a handicap below a certain level (say single digit and lower) and any formally sanctioned event.

THEN there should be a set of rules that legitimize play for the NON-SANCTIONED EVENT and/or players with a double digit handicap. The game is indeed slow, its difficult to learn, and its WAY too stuffy in terms of the rule book for learning golfers and Sunday hackers. These golfers do NOT need someone throwing the rule book as written up in their face. Yet there is no established rules for such players. They are either in violation or they're not and in my book they need a little break -- at least until/unless they are getting that handicap down and playing in formal events for prizes. They should NOT be considered "cheaters".... just players not subjected to the rule book used by advanced players. There is not one piece of paper that says they are NOT cheating when they are just trying to play and learn for fun and that should change IMO.

I've voted for Stenson all year long. Same for Kuchar. Same for Rickie. Would love to see one of those guys at least win an event as things wind down.

I don’t have a problem with the ruling but with the timing. If anchoring had been banned 20 yrs. ago it would not be the controversial issue it has become. I also think the rule as written leaves some wiggle room and some areas of confusion. When you use words like intentionally you open up an area that can’t be policed. No one can know what another person intends.

I think it will be an interesting discussion for some time. Will there be fans calling in violations?

Well fellas, I didn't play well, but I played better than the other fella. Moving on in my flight against the world's nicest guy, although he's not near nice enough for me to roll over for him :)

I think we're going to get the families together and have drinks tomorrow on the off day. We'll see...

Anyways, I don't like the long putter and never have. Blows me away that a friend who could be a plus four is a four with a broomstick. He plays a course with tricky greens (the one I'm playing on for the tourney) and I guarantee it's a huge advantage. BTW, He usually plays 27. That's the outside 18 and the inside 9. We played the course, the first time I saw the "outside" on the 4th of July, family obligations and all we only played 18. I played the same 18 twice for practice and qualifying then wake up this morning at 5 to play at 7:15 and get to the club to find out we're playing the other 9 twice for the match. Perfect.

Edit : I might or might not be TOOL'd :busted_cop:

I just think there are a lot more problems in golf than the long putter..and I just don't think the powers that be are
looking in the right direction. If the long putter was that big of an advantage, you wouldn't have seen ANY short ones
on tour at all. I just see so many conflicting ideas coming out ....I am now in the "ignore them all mode...I just go play.
I do not do tourneys and the such,so I just enjoy the game. They can go change whatever they choose.I will just
keep on keepin" on.

My regular playing partner used a broomstick for years as his back is a mess (just discovered he has two slipped discs) and he recently switched to a conventional putter because he was worried that members at his private club were going to create a stink. I know what I would tell them (PD isn't always nice ; )

Matt,

I've really enjoyed reading your tournament reflections. I commented a few Confessions threads back that my instructor indicated that I should try my hand at the 'Bogey Tour' and frankly, I'm scared.

This is the story of my last two morning rounds. I moved to the forward set of tees last week during a practice round (I sometimes don't pull the flag on long putts, hit a second shot if I'm not entirely pleased with the first, and/or chip/pitch around the greens after I hole out) to work on my mid-short irons. Hit 17 GIR. Didn't play for a week (given all of the chaos) and hit 15 GIR from my regular tees. Now ask me to produce these results under any level of pressure and I'm pooched. I feel at times like I'm destined to play my best golf as a single, early in the morning, when there isn't a soul in sight. Not that I'm bothered by this much. I'm never going to make a living at this wonky game and certainly don't want to lose sleep.

Scotee,

I'd love to be swinging a golf club at 93 years of age. Heck, I'd like to be walking (with all of my faculties) at 93.
