Played Oakmont last week pics inside!

I got the opportunity of a lifetime to play Oakmont last Monday. The course was absolutely beautiful and brutal! I was told the rough was about 8" high and the greens were reading 14 on the meter. It was an amazing experience. Enjoy!

Do you mind letting us know what your handicap is, and what you shot? I am just curious as to how someone would do playing what is right now probably the most difficult course in the world.

That's nice Scary thing is you said the rough is eight inches, and in your second picture they have the mowers cutting the rough. The USGA knows how to put on a show.

It's amazing what they do to tour courses and just how good those guys are, especially at the open.

 

I usually play from 6700-7000 yards and I was a 2 handicap entering the final of our Club Championship on the Champion Course at PGA National, one week before the Honda Classic. I shot 82 and my opponent, a +2 shot 83, All Square. That's how difficult that course was playing. (I won with a bird on the 1st playoff hole). The rough was so nasty, that if you missed the narrow fairways, it was bogey at best. Under normal conditions, I can break par on that course, but with the tour setup, (narrower fairways, deeper rough, faster greens), it's tough to break 80.

 

When they say "These guys are good!" They really are.

I am a 9-10 handicap and feel somewhat lucky to have shot a 99. I was happy to break 100! The rough is an absolute killer. If you don't hit the fairway (which are very narrow) it's all trouble. I found myself hoping I would find bunkers instead of the rough. It was very easy to lose a ball in that stuff!

 

As difficult as it was and as beat up as I felt afterwards, I loved every minute of it!

The par three 8th played at about 235-240 from the blue tees. It's unbelievable from the backs. I actually hit one my best shots on this hole. I hit a hybrid to about 15ft. Then 3 putted for bogey

Very nice, however, I have to say that this isn't a style of course I would like. I need trees! Sometimes, courses just aren't the same without them. Links style courses are different. I was reading an article in Golf Digest about how the club removed trees in the mask of night so members couldn't protest the tree removal program. If I was a member the day before that, I wouldn't be one after.

 

I'll take an Oak Hill or Winged Foot any day of the week, those are the ultimate in classic courses to me.

I was reading an article in Golf Digest about how the club removed trees in the mask of night so members couldn't protest the tree removal program. If I was a member the day before that, I wouldn't be one after.

Yeah....I read/heard that it was over 5000 trees. That's ashame. I'm just not sure it was necessary to cut down that many....and I'm no tree-hugger.

I tend to disagree with you. The course I grew up at went through a very extensive tree removal program several years ago. The course had become overrun with non-native species. The removal program increased turf conditions tremendously. Additionally, it opened up sight lines, which brought the course back to the architect's original intent. Needless to say, I think the removal program greatly benefitted the course. I get the impression that Oakmont's tree removal program did the same.

I couldn't agree more. A well thougth out tree removal is often one of the best things that can happen to an older course like this for the reasons you listed.

Awesome! That is one difficult course anytime. Not only when the open is comming. YOu did great to shoot that score, fairways there are a premium. I played Oakmont many times when my best freind was a chef there, unfortunaly he passed away in October.

Thanks for the photos. Played it last year and I'm playing it again in August when my beloved Mets are in town. Can't wait. Pictures got me totally psyched.
