CAD Files

Does anyone on here have experience with creating cad files? I have a friend that has access to CNC mill and would like to create something. He is willing to pay and give the individual that contributes to make this project work a finished product. Not sure how difficult it is but I figured I'd ask to help do my part.

There are various modeling software types. Where I work we use Solidworks, Catia, and ProE. Once you have a model of the desired object, programing a CNC machine center to make said part is a different matter completely. I know just enough to be dangerous regarding this stuff, but I do know that you guys need to make a plan and be more specific about what you need before you are going to get a useable part.

I used to be proficient - but that was over 15 years ago and I'm sure things have changed a bit since then. Nessism's comments are spot on concerning not enough info was giving to be able to give a much more specific answer. "The devil's in the details".

Just some of the more important questions would be: What would the 'helper' being starting with? How detailed and accurate are the designs coming from your friend? What CAD formats are supported by the CNC software he will be using? How well does the CNC software support all the possible features that could be found in a particular CAD format? Keep in mind there different types of CAD software, not all work the same or have compatible outputs. There are some 'free' version available on line - although can't say whether if any of them would be compatible with the CNC software.

You guys might want to consider taking the bombtech route and work with your local university's engineering department. I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to get someone who wants to do this as a side project.

Not a bad idea but it depends on what the OP is talking about making. If he's talking about trying to design and mill a putter head you're looking at 100+ hours of CAD time. If he's talking about milling some divot tools or ball markers probably 5-10. Some additional details would make it easier to give him advice.

No offense intended, but someone who has a decent handle on the software they are using should be able to knock out something as simple as a putter in less than a 20 hours of CAD time, and a ball marker of divot tool shouldn't take more than 20-30 minutes. Now if you start getting into multiple iterations and making tweaks here and there you can start tacking on more hours. Of course if you start getting into some irons or wedges that requires some surfacing then yes, that will take longer than a putter.

Anyway, until the OP lets us know what exactly he's trying to make then it's all just speculation.

It all depends how complex it is. I pretty proficient with solidworks and when I designed a putter I would call finished it took me about 100 hours give or take but there were a ton of iterations in the process. A simple blade style putter that he is talking about shouldn't take more than 10 or so.

Just a simple blade style putter. Im new to all of it and Ive been working on and off on it for weeks. Its very difficult, created the CAD in Inventor.

I'm still not exactly sure what you are asking us for.

I didn't mean start a company. I'm sure that's not easy. But plenty of engineering students would jump at the chance for some extra cash, especially if they can spin it into a project for one of their classes. If he could find one passionate about golf then even better!

I think the Bombtech dude meant finding an engineering student to help out. That's how I read it at least.

Ah, I see. Well having been one myself I know that engineering students find these little side projects very fun and are usually willing to jump in. So I'd be surprised if it took all that long to find someone that was interested. The op already mentioned his buddy in school for CAD jumped at the chance to help, so it looks like that avenue worked out alright.

I defer to your knowledge and experience.

Sorry, re-read my post and I didn't mean to come off like a know it all. I just meant to share my experience and why I thought it would be a good route for someone looking to get a little CAD done. I suppose if you live in an area where there isn't a university close by then trying to contact and work with an engineering student would be more of a challenge.

No need to be sorry. I did not think you were coming of like a know it all. I simply interjected my reading of the post you referenced and I'm not sure why I did. My post was not meant to send a message. Your experience trumps my opinion.
