Beautiful ... when he comments about a "solid" block, presumably this is referring to the absence of any holes drilled for adding lead etc ?

For a Left handed M80W with a butterfly soleplate, the answer is....Yes.

It was the norm to have lead under the soleplate - mass producing

manufacturers counted on it to fine tune the club weight and swingweight.

Since raw persimmon heads are different in density and weight in general,

it would be more tedious/take more time to sort by exact weights to get

the finished product right without the lead finishing touch.

I think many of the manufacturers did sort the wood weight wise for

driver/fairway wood purposes though prior to the turning lathe (lighter

ones for driver and heavier ones for fairway woods).

Dave Wood took the time to do this - it was part of the reason why he

oil hardened his woods (to get the weight of the club up to what he

needed with no lead). In the classic woods - it would probably just

happen by chance only, so more likely than not lead would be needed

in the end.

Just as a side note, I have a set of 1932 Spalding Robert T. Jones, Jr.

Cushion Neck Model DJ332 (driver, 2 and 3 woods) woods that are being

retrofitted to hickory shafts - none of the three have any lead under

the soleplate (but they do all have a very small lead backweight with a

V notch)

My Paul Gibson is a solid block without a sole plate, so no lead hiding in there anywhere - just wood and an insert. Will dig it out and take a photo (and avoid posting it in the Gibson thread - that is confused enough).

Have seen Bussons like this too, although he added horn to the leading edge so it wouldn't wear out just like you see on some hickory clubs. Apparently when he found a lump like this he'd hammer it into his vice to demonstrate how solid it was, the wood emerging unscathed. Presumably also saved for a very good customer...
