Lead side creates the energy and speed in the swing

Golfbeat

Recommended Posts

Nerd as I am, I spent $49 to get access to the videos of the presentations given at the 3rd Annual Open Forum. Presenters were Dr. Kwon, Dr. Sasho MacKenzie, Dr. Phil Cheetham, Mark Broadie, Chris Como and others. Topics were Handle Twist Velocity , Forward Dynamics Modeling, Ground Reaction Forces and some others.

I was intrigued by a statement made by Dr. Sasho McKenzie. He said that virtually all energy and speed is created by the lead side (left arm and hand for a right handed golfer) and that the trail side has just a supporting role.

There are a lot more knowledgeable people on this Forum than me and I was just wondering what happened to the three right hands of Hogan. I probably misunderstood but it seems an interesting issue.

I'm not one of the 'more knowledgeable people' here but I'll share an experience I had recently which fits here.

I played with my brother who was visiting the UK from Tasmania so a bit of sibling rivalry may have been present. However it was as if the god of golf pointed a finger and said 'today you shall have an aggressive swing'.

I normally hit a 5 wood of the tee (old guy) about 190 yds. I felt so 'connected' and comfortable that I started to use my 3 wood. I was absolutely smashing it.

The course has small bushes at either side of the fairway to mark 100 yds from the centre of the green. On a 353yd par 4 I hit the 3 wood past these markers and just thought 'where did that come from'. I was hitting my 7 wood 200 yds off the fairway.

I did find I was pushing the ball a bit right but not enough to get me into trouble.

What was I doing differently - after some considerable time over the last year of trying to speed up my arms and get connected on this round I initiated the downswing with an aggressive hip turn. Why I don't know - brother 18 months younger than me, 6 inches taller and built like a brick sh$thouse - desperation perhaps.

Hogan page 95 - 'When he has inaugurated his downswing by turning his hips, a golfer suddenly becomes aware of his tremendous stored up power'

I have found that the muscles in my lower back, just above the hips were a bit sore (particularly on the left side) as though I was using them fully for the first time so I lost it.

This is not the issue you are asking about but does concern the lead side and I'm sure you are aware of it. I think however it maybe a prerequisite to gaining power from the left side - arm.

As a follow on this experience I saw a video last week from J Mclean about the left hand controlling ball flight. Too wet to play at the weekend so went to the range and tried hitting the ball more with the left arm/hand.

In order to do so I got more of the hip movement mentioned above, the ball was going further and the shots had a nice draw.

I think I understood what Monte says about the left arm coming off the chest for the first time.

Interesting that you brought this up and thank you. Something I'll be trying out.

Has Monte ever done a video on getting the left arm off the chest?

Yes. And Brendon has done some videos with Monte that explain left arm off chest in conjunction with keeping the head back on downswing, especially with driver.

And Carl Lohren knew this without trackman or fancy gizmo's

His entire teaching is based on this premise ..

Never had heard of him before, so thanks for mentioning him. In this vid, he advocates torquing the left lat from the beginning and says if done properly will lead the back swing and carry the load through the downswing:

That explains what I was doing without realising (as mentioned in earlier post) it and why the left lat was sore afterwards. Interestingly the downswing was reflexive as he describes. Thanks.

Golfbeat........watched a couple of videos from the Third Open Forum today including Sasho's. I'm surprised this thread didn't get more attention. I was always a left arm/hand swinger until a few years ago whenI felt I needed to introduce a right arm "skipping the stone" action. My HC rose quickly. A lot of golfers don't like to talk about this left vs. right stuff but I think Sasho is right on.

I don't know where anyone could come up with a categorical statement like that. As with everything in golf, it depends on what side of the fence you're on.

The guy that trains 2014 Long Drive Champ Jeff Flagg believes quite the opposite, and gets him to focus on using his right arm to create Flagg's club head speed.

First issue I have with that is Chris Comos name, he does not know what he is doing.

second, take the statement and then try to make sense out of that when your not making solid impact in the first place thinking it will.

third, Mike Austin just turned in his grave.

Fourth, Hogan had to say that for the reason, due to how he swung.

Fifth, when so called experts of bio mechanics get it wrong explaining force and torque thats really simple really.

I stop here.

In the video, does he discuss how he's measuring the energy contribution from each side?

Yes, he does. He uses a computer generated model of the "perfect" swing in terms of club head speed, path, angle of attack, kinetic sequence of the body etc. He then applies what he calls a Closed Loop System of the lead arm only and then compares that with a model where both hands are used. He also uses data from a Japanese scientist who actually developed a golf club handle with sensors built in. As I said before, I have absolutely no scientific background and he uses a lot of mathematical formulas.

The only question that I had after watching the video again is what would happen if he would use the computer model with only the trail arm and then compare it with both hands. Perhaps this is answered in his video somewhere in the formulas. I don't know.

It would be nice if somebody with some physics background would purchase the videos and give some feedback because I think it is interesting.

Oh Austin again. Did you even meet with or talk to him? Prove he even had that kinesiology degree. Your swing doesn't look like Austin's anyway.
