Portland area course conditions

Played Langdon Friday - had to take advantage of this amazing fall weather. Late start due to a frost delay, but once we started it was beautiful.

 

Fairways and rough were in tremendous shape. Greens were very, very slow. I never adjusted to the speed.

 

Now plotting how to get in another round before the rains set in.

Played Langdon Sunday afternoon, and was just barely able to finish 18 holes before the dark (and the cold) set in. Course was overall in great shape, the rough isn't soft yet, fairways still quite good, and greens still good (though a little soft considering the good weather we've had). I will echo what Kernel said about the green speed: strangely slow, though they seemed to roll true. I also played last weekend and the greens were still "normal" speed but there were some noticeable bumps here and there. I have a feeling that the cold is forcing the maintenance crew to keep the greens longer so that the turf stays healthy, it is mid-November after all.

I would guess this is it. Most likely mowing once a week if at all, especially with frost delays. I know he doesn’t like or want to spray a growth regulator.

It was in fantastic shape - everything was dialed in. Keep in mind, however, that was several weeks ago after a prolonged dry spell. It's not the best draining course and this week's rains will certainly soften things up.

Just played Heron blue. Course was in ok condition, given the time of year. Worst part was all the goose poop. Greens were in better than expected shape. Hardly anyone on the course.

langdon monday was impeccable. greens were fast and smooth. my playing partners mentioned a couple soft spots but I never found one. winter rates there are great too

Unfortunately, I didn't go out at all. Now I'm hoping to get out for a round on Friday afternoon, depending on how the weather looks. I did drive by Langdon Farms yesterday just to look at it, and it's firmly at the top of my list of courses to try. I'm always down to play with new people though, so if anyone wants a game, hit me up.

 

Also, it's totally random and off topic, but if anyone here has a line on any specialty retail management jobs... I'm looking for a new gig. Just putting it out there.

Met up a with a fellow PDX WRX'r and played Bandon Trails yesterday. I'd say the conditions were pretty good. Greens were a little subject, but I guess that's just Bandon.

Played at Quail Valley Sunday. Surprisingly squishy, given that we haven't had a lot of rain in the past few days. Greens were in good shape, though.

Played Stone Creek Sunday. Frost delay in the morning, but they opened things up at 8:30. The course was still frozen. I was shocked they let us out there when they did. The greens were rock hard for at least the first 6 holes.

 

Anyway, once things thawed the course was in great shape. Almost no soggy spots and the greens were quite good.

Stone Creek on Sunday was in great shape. Went out at 10:30. I was told it was soft on Saturday and much better Sunday.

 

Was first out at Quail on Monday, which was frost delayed until 10:00. It was its typical soft self after the thaw.

Played 27 holes this weekend at Stone Creek. Most of the course was pretty dry and fairly firm considering. The greens were receptive and even though I rarely touched them, the ball seemed to be bouncing well in most fairways for others. When you get off the fairway, things were soggy in spots but that is to be expected. I only had 1 ball plug in 27 holes. My biggest and really only complaint would be the bunkers. Some looked like they haven't been touched in months and were in pretty bad shape.

Wanted to revive this thread as we are under snow east of the Cascades and I’m itching to play some dang golf! How are the courses holding up in the valley? Worth a trip over?

Heron lakes and rose city are playable. I played 2 rounds at rose city and one at heron blue. Not bad considering it's February. Just don't expect perfect conditions, but it'll scratch the itch. I'm sure stone creek and Langdon are even better.

Played Heron blue yesterday. A few plugged balls, mostly of the fairway. A few bounces on fairway. Course is playable, a bit muddy in some places. Bunkers are not raked, so I rake my own and drop ball.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Sounds like Portland and the Valley are wet and getting wetter (and snowier...). Maybe the coast or California would be a better option for a quick trip next weekend.

 

Luckily I did get to play 18 on both Saturday and Sunday this weekend at Meadow Lakes in Prineville. It rained and snowed both days, but it was golf! My shoes kept icing up on Saturday.

 

And then I wake up to this s**t this morning!
