Not surprised about the driver, since he couldn't hit his old one to save his life, but am shocked at the switch of his 3 wood. He BOMBED it and literally made millions with that thing.

14 Beaten and Battered clubs,

a few balls and tees,

tattered golf bag and

one unwavering spirit that loves the game

the new 3 wood must be good to get the old one out of the bag ? lets see how long its lasts ? a lot of players put the new clubs in and quietly put the old ones in after a few games. his driver does not get much use though?

he could bag a left handed driver and it wouldn't make a difference. he almost never hits it. The fairway woods are a bit of a surprise but he may just use them for a few rounds and slowly bring back old faithful.

Reminds me of the old TM strategy, get these guys to switch from their "trusty" club right around said club's launch. Then two weeks later old trusty is back in the bag, and the public who doesn't see WITB pictures is none the wiser. They just saw a Callaway article or hear commentators and think he's switched for good.

I would love to see how this all went down. Did they have to pull it out of his hands. Looks like the same shaft.

That would explain the broken leg. Callaway had to send a couple lads with baseball bats over to "convince" him

nice! Sounds much more difficult than getting him to switch to Odyssey.

A lot of the tour guys when way out of the lead will change putters and try different clubs on Sunday.

I spoke with my Callaway friend about 6 months ago, asking him why Stenson was still using the Octane 3 wood. His text response was brief at the time, but he said that Stenson liked how it carried the exact same yardage almost every time he hit it (I think he said something like 290 yards). For years, he didn't upgrade, because he liked the predictability of his carry yardage with this particular club, so changing to a newer 3 wood didn't have much relevance to him.

I haven't asked him about the switch yet, but I suspect he now thinks he can upgrade to a new 3 wood and hit it as far as all the big boys hit their drivers.

One of my buddies friends works with the equipment companies to see what the players are playing. He said that a lot of the guys will try anything and will be trying a bunch of different clubs on the range or putting green on Sunday morning before teeing off. This is usually regarding players who don't have full sponsorships with a specific equipment manufacturer. If they think something might work better, they give it a try on the weekend after they have made the cut. It is more common on Sunday when they are pretty far back and don't have much chance to win.

Maybe it broke. I had on of the Diablo Octane tour 3 woods that was my go to for about 4 or 5 years, and one day I got a crack right across the top of the face. I tried to replace it with another one of the same model, but it just wasn't the same.

He might as well just leave the driver at home and go to a mini off the tee and a normal 3 wood for attacking par 5's or specific lay up distance off the tee.

Not sure about his new 3-wood (I would guess its 13 degrees), but his old one was 13 degrees; which is a strong 3-wood and not much different than an 11 or 12 degree mini driver.

He's a top 10 player in the world. Callaway will make him anything he wants. If he wanted a 9 degree mini, he'd have one.

But I'm guessing he feels more comfortable with a 13 degree 3-wood then hitting a mini-driver. To Stenson, his strong 3-wood is his mini driver.

I agree with you. My point was just that if the smaller head gives him more confidence maybe a mini would be an option that suited him better than a driver that never gets used. It just seems a waste of a club space that could be used for something he may actually hit. :)

Very true. He may also just like having the driver in the bag for holes he feels comfortable on, if he needs or wants 20 extra yards or so.

I understand it isn't a first person account, but it would make sense for many of the guys not fully sponsored or struggling a little. As amateurs we will quickly change a club here and there. I don't think the professionals are that much different, especially when they aren't in contention. Switch out to a backup putter or different fairway wood just to see if it works better.
