What is the most important component of your irons?

FairwayGolfUSA.com

Recommended Posts

What do you look for in a set of irons? Distance? Accuracy? Shot-shaping? Look and feel?

Choosing new irons can be a bit tricky. It's such a big purchase but most people do not know what they're looking for or the options available to them. For some, distance is an issue because of a slow swing speed and they should look at game improvement irons. However, the better player can pretty much post a decent score with anything in their hands so the subjective things like look and feel are important. If you are looking for feel, nothing can beat Japanese forged such as Miuras, but you must try them for yourself. If you are looking for more forgiveness, the perimeter weighting of a cavity back would likely help your scoring. The truth is that, unless you're just going to display the clubs, your irons must perform in the greens-in-regulation and distance control categories. To truly find out what will work for your game you must try a bunch of different irons and compare the ones you like against your current irons. Getting fit is very important for the consistency of your game.

Demo new clubs. Feel the power. Get fit. Numbers don't lie.

More distance is always nice but for me knowing where the ball is going to end up will always trump distance as far as I'm concerned.

I want accuracy and as part of that distance control. I'm lucky enough to have decent distance so for me its all about going onto the green in regulation.

I am looking for the right size, sole, and look at address. Distance (unless they are abnormally short) is not an issue. Feel is nice, but not imperative.

I played a set of Titleist 762's from the time they came out until about 2 years ago. They were close to perfect in size and shape. My current irons feel nicer, and I flat out love the look at address.

I started playing in '87 at the end of the time when everyone used forged blades. I played the first 5 years with blades and am comfortable with a smaller head. Strictly my opinion, but the two most important things in an iron are loving the way it looks at address and confidence in how it performs.

I posted the results of an experiment that I did about 7 years ago here. I took vacation time and played 10 rounds in 14 days. For 5 I played 690.MB's and the other 5 I played X-14 Pro Series (alternating between rounds.) After comparing scores, fairways hit, greens hit, and putts, I found out that the difference in my scores between the two were insignificant. My better rounds were the result of good driving, chipping, and putting and those same areas lead to my worse rounds.

1) How does it look behind the ball?

Irons, which have looked "good behind the ball" to me include such different animals as Mizuno MP-32s, Wilson Staff FG V2 and C-11s, Cleveland 588TTs and Ping 25s.

2) Does it feel like it is a part of my body, when I swing it?

This probably has to do with overall static weight as well as with weight distribution.

3) Can I hit the ball at different heights with it?

4) Do I get roughly consistent distances with the 7- and the 8-iron when I miss it up or down the face?

This is my typical miss and the kind of "forgiveness" I am looking for.

I see a gap. There definitely is a gap.

Aesthetics 1st, have to be pleasing to my eye. I've found that all/most clubs feel the same on well struck shots and feel has alot to do with sound which is also affected by the type of ball you play. I don't like vibration on mishits and appreciate less loss of distance on mishits. Cost plays a factor as well as i don't seem to be able to grow the same money tree that alot of folks seem to have here. Must be Ohio weather.

I like a blade-look, solid feel, and distance gapping is important. I also want a versatile PW, one that I can hit a variety of shots with, including chip and runs, and preferably a full PW should be 30 yards shorter than my 7i, so I can go from PW to 7i in 10 yard gaps. However, as I'm a WRXer, I sold the irons with which I could achieve this goal.

Looks and feel. I have 14 clubs, distance is irrelevant, ill just take more club if needed.

- The Right Look - (Otherwise, I won't even try them)

- Solid Feel - (Forged or at least a forged feel)

- Accuracy/Trajectory Control - (Must also perform in the wind)

- Adequate Distance - (Can't be shorter than expected)

They have to

1) Look right to my eye or I won't feel comfortable

2) Consistent. If I need to hit it 185, I don't need it to go 190 or 180

3) Proper gapping. If they are super long and I'm hitting PW 150 but only carry my GW 125 we have a problem.

Looks, Feel, Consistent distant gaps. I prefer a clean look, the TM 300 forged are my standard. Feel is largely shaft related and I prefer DG's. I need to know that when I hit each iron that it's going to go the expected distance (no hot spots).

I do prefer a nice feel, nice sole, and look....a lot of clubs cover these but I choose Mizuno because I am comfortable with them and always come back....not because their better but I just like em...

I don't believe any club is better or worse than any other....it's a hunk of metal...it doesn't get more consistent than metal

1. Aesthics (low offset, thinner topline) - I won't even swing it if there is too much offset no matter how far it goes

2. feel, sound

So, it seems like most of you want the look and feel of the club to be right. Alex1975 said it best... Why do you have the other clubs if you're just going to squeeze the life out of a 9-iron trying to reach 165 yards? You have 14 clubs for a reason (15 for some of you tinkerers out there). We all know that the shaft is VERY important for influencing ball flight and shape given a consistent input (swing). Assuming that you can put any shaft into the head, it comes down to the head. GolfWRX is an unrepresentative sample because the average WRXer is known as an aficionado of sorts and probably an above-average player but most of you like the look of a blade type head. While the minimal offset and thin sole and top line are beautiful there sure are attractive performance aspects of game improvement irons. Psychologically speaking, there is a definite performance advantage for those people who love the look of their clubs. Forged clubs do offer more bending and tinkering options but the cast and multi-piece clubs can offer better feel and performance on mishits.

Distance control and turf interaction are co #1. I need to know my exact distances to expect to score, and I need to know the iron isn't going to dig when I get aggressive.

This is exactly why i went with the srixons, the v sole has by far the best turf interaction I've ever hit. especially for a steep swinging digger.
