Agreed. Look at Dove Mountain or JW Marriott Starr Pass they have better courses and resorts. Would take both of those before the two you mentioned, depends on prices though.

Just throwing out one other suggestion - Westin La Paloma (La Paloma Golf & Country Club). I've stayed there twice and really enjoyed the resort, and the golf is 27 holes of an awesome Nicklaus design. May not be for everyone, but some local opinion I've heard is that it's one of the tougher tests in the Tucson area.

I was reading some forums that the "golf club at Dove mountain course" has gone downhill in terms of conditioning a little bit. But i guess its still better then the national and ventana?

I have played Dove Mountain in pretty much every single time period, summer, spring, fall and winter. The conditions have been solid every single time Ive played it. Obviously don't go after overseeding when they punch the greens. Don't know what the dates are of overseeding though.

No. Resort is ok. Course is blah and not in good shape. "awesome" is way exaggerated and it is not that tough of a course.

That's your opinion and that's cool. Just stating two facts - I played there in the first week of December and the course was in very good shape, and two...I'm friends with several people who live in the area and more than one have told me that it's one of the tougher courses. If you don't agree with that, it's cool....I was just passing along info to the OP that was told to me.

Agreed! Saying La Paloma isn't in good shape couldn't be further from the truth. Just played Hill/Canyon Friday and Ventana's mountain course 2 weeks before that. Both are in great shape. I'd even say Paloma's greens were running a little smoother. Haven't been out to Tucson National since October but it was playing well then. All three great courses!!

  • 1 month later...

Just stayed at Dove Mountain last Wednesday/Thursday. Down here for work from the east coast and put some Marriott points toward the stay. Highly recommend the resort/golf if you are in the area. About 30 min drive from Tucson. Was going to play all 27 holes Thursday but buddy and I had to get back to work. Phenomenal conditions, friendly staff, and not busy. My buddy and I played in 3.5 hours including a few stops to get beverages. First time playing AZ golf, so can't compare to any of the surrounding courses.

Which course is better at ventana? Mount or canyon?

My description of the Canyon course is a nice cart ride, interrupted on occasion by golf holes.

Only course I've played where you have use a map to get from the ninth green to the tenth tee.

My guess is that I like the course a bit more than you do, but your not wrong. Ventana can be a very confusing place to get around!

You need to check La Paloma out again. Don't know how long it's been since you played it but Troon is doing an awesome job with it now!!

Gallery south, Dove Mountain to me is overrated.

I think Dove is more of a desert golf course, and most will say the greens are much harder (difficult) than Gallery. Conditioning may go to the Gallery but not by much. Both were played on the tour if that's something that interests you. We are going back to Dove in the next 3 weeks for our annual round of golf there.

I have played Dove Mountain and The Gallery many times over the last 6 years.

The Gallery North course is the best "public" course in Tucson. The views are fantastic, and the course has a good mix of holes. The south course is on par with dove mountain. The conditioning is always better on the North course as it is the member preferred course mostly due to the views and it is slightly easier. The pace of play is better at the gallery, but the customer service is better at Dove Mountain.
