Which 1st set of Mizuno irons should I get?

Shawn Paul

Recommended Posts

Attention all you Mizuno lovers, Mizzy bobo's and fanboy's. Here is your opportunity to gush about your Mizzy clubs and unabashedly give your opinion on what is best without fear of conflict or confrontation (well, no guarantees).

I would like to start building a 2nd set (it seems I've sold off all my other 2nd sets) and I'll be starting with used Mizuno irons but I'm not sure where to start.

Obviously, I'll be hitting many before making the final decision but I'd like to weed out the weakest links so I'm not wasting time.

I want to go used first to get a good feel for the clubs before I invest in new ones. Where should I aim?

MP59? MP67? MP69-59 combo? MP60? M14?

I'm looking to spend $200 - $400 plus a lil extra on the irons.

Get after it

PURCHASE UPDATE

I was able to take some time last week and hit MP33, MP64, MP53 & MP60's. The winner for me are the MP 33's w/ S300's. I had them fitted to me with loft and lie adjustments. The clubs were all +1 strong on the loft and the fitter and I agreed this was a good thing! We flatted out 3 & 4 a bit - I am 5’10”. I found them for $200 with no browning.

The fitting was great but the initial testing was not, and here’s why. The sim screen had the pin on the left but the ball was tee’d up on the right. My brain would not allow me not to pull the ball left. I was supposed to hit straight which essentially meant hitting the ball in the corner of the hitting bay while the screen displayed trees. My brain would not allow me to do it. I kept hooking and big time drawing the ball but I knew this was just a mental thing. The store said they are waiting to get the bay fixed and that’s why it is set up all catawampus. My brain could not get over it!

When I decided on the 33’s and went into the other fitting bay (where the pin was in front of where I was hitting) everything was fine and I was hitting perfectly straight – thank God.

I found that the MP33’s felt really nice and my ball striking isn’t as bad as I thought. I definitely can feel the mishits but I’m hoping that some time with these irons will minimize that. I did notice I’m losing 10-15 yards in comparison to my G30’s but I guess that is to be expected?!? G30 7 iron 170-175 vs MP33 7 iron 155-160 yards.

The fitter commented that the MP33’s are soft and with swings over time the lie may change and to have them checked periodically. I would have never thought of that.

I just got them re-gripped and I’ll be off to the golf dome tonight for some practice! Thanks again to everyone for the advice. It sound like this may be a good sounding board for others looking to dip their toe into the Mizuno pool.

I'd echo the MP53. Also if you can find in good shape, MP60, MP62

If forgiveness is a priority then look no further than the mp53.

If you are a good ball striker and can live without the most forgiving offering then I'd find a set of mp32s or mp4s.

Good luck!

I have 53s and 32s - when the swing is on, the 32s are sweet - any other day the 53s make more sense and are still nice to hit.

Gotta give us more information, do you want blade or CB? modern or classic? forgiveness or feel?

Otherwise you will get a separate recommendation for each MP model ever made

The one best all around iron that most embodies all of these attributes, offers the best feel for its forgiveness, is both modern and classic, is the MP 64

But if you're only tombout blades, you have about 10 different options

Mizuno MP-54 or 53's. If you go anything less forgiving than that I would go all the way to the blade, I personally don't see much forgiveness difference from the blade until the 54's (that is probably more me, I am the type that hit my irons pretty well, but when I miss I miss big, that's probably why. I have owned MP-53,54,58,59,60,63,64,68 and JPX-825 Pro's, JPX-EZ Forged.

Thanks for the input everyone! I think it probably comes down the MP33's, MP64's or the MP53's. I am leaning towards the 33's. I'll hit em next week and let you know!

It seems like all these can be found in nice condition for a reasonable price.

That's the thing, they have sold so many if you are patient you can typically find very good value. I bought my 3-PW MP-33s from Dallasgolf last autumn for $150 and for the level of wear they had it was a fantastic price. Good luck with your search :)

If it is, I'm in trouble. I'm looking for a set of 33's to do something almost identical with.

For the OP, I play 32's. Love them, and haven't found anything I'd kick them out of the bag for. Maybe 4's. Purely on looks, and a desire for new and shiny.

Tigernick is the opposite of mizuno blasphemy. It's more like a weird kind of love/worship. Like when you have a great dog, and when he dies you get him stuffed and you put little wheels on him and still take him for walks.

Ah thanks for the clarification. They look unique but I'm looking for something more traditional in appearance. There is a guy local to me who "spine aligns" and "pure flo's" used clubs and jacks up the price. As an example, he would sell this set closer to a grand. So, by comparison I'd say this is a better deal.

Nice comparison btw it had me laughing out, loudly.

I haven't played many sets of Mizuno's, but I was looking to build a mixed set comprised of MP-32 7-PW and MP-60 3-6 irons. I have a full set of MP-32's, but would like some more forgiving long irons. I am going to hit my buddies MP-59's before I make a decision, but this thread may help me chose, also.

The "sweet spot" for mizuno is their MP line. I wouldn't buy anything that isn't an MP club first off. The cream of that crop is obviously the blades. They're famous for their classic bladed irons. My personal favorites are MP 14, 33, 32, and 4. Just below that are the player's cavity backs - these are what REALLY make mizuno a popular brand. MP 60 and 64 are the most iconic in this category. Based on your cap - this is what i'd recommend for a second set. MP 60 or 64. A slightly bladier club with second to none feel. If you already have a more forgiving set of irons - go with something more challenging - it'll make you a better ball striker.
