I play53s , I needed more than the MX25s I had and went to MP57s( beautiful, forgotten, never mentioned mizzys), but didn't play them well.I went to the 53s. A rebuilt shoulder slowed swing so with DGSL R300 and the 53s they are sweetest club I've hit. I regularly try all new lines Mizuno puts out, cannot find better combo of feel, looks, and forgiveness

The "sweet spot" for mizuno is their MP line. I wouldn't buy anything that isn't an MP club first off. The cream of that crop is obviously the blades. They're famous for their classic bladed irons. My personal favorites are MP 14, 33, 32, and 4. Just below that are the player's cavity backs - these are what REALLY make mizuno a popular brand. MP 60 and 64 are the most iconic in this category. Based on your cap - this is what i'd recommend for a second set. MP 60 or 64. A slightly bladier club with second to none feel. If you already have a more forgiving set of irons - go with something more challenging - it'll make you a better ball striker.

Thanks for the tips, becoming a better ball striker is indeed what I'm looking to improve upon with this set!

Currently running MP4s from P-7 and MP-H4 for 6-4 for forgiveness in the long irons. Haven't had much of a chance to test them out since I am nursing an elbow injury but from the range time I had with them and the round I played I really loved my good shots. The blades are a bit above my skill level but the more i practice with them the better I get. When I'm striking them well I find myself more accurate with the blade short irons.

Sure is getting close to golf season up north or at least I hope. I've played the MP-59 for 2 1/2 years and loved them. Last winter I found a new set of MP-69 on eBay with the right shafts and also love them. Man they look sweet. I would say they both played close to the same with the MP-59 being a bit more forgiving, but not much. I'm amazed on how they still fly close to the right yardage on miss hits. Good luck.

Then i highly recommend the mp 60/ 63/ 64 area. They are more forgiving than they look and they look pretty bladey. Don't be afraid of a skinnier iron. I know lots of guys that actually do better with a smaller clubhead. Even if you don't hit it great at first you will learn to hit them after a few practice sessions.

Oh I should add in case you haven't figured it out yet, there are super cheap 6 irons only on ebay. It makes it easy to demo an older model. Also you can use them for practice.

I play a 54/4 combo but I have a 64/67/33 all 6 irons that I practice with

This. I'd bump the 63s however. They didn't feel nearly as good as the 60 or 64. Voshell, the designer, also mentioned that the 63s went "forgiveness" and built feel around it. The 64s, they started with feel.

If ur looking for feel plus some forgiveness, the mp 64 is just about the bees knees.

If u like a blade, for what u want to spend with patience, mp 4, or mp 68.

The mp 67 can be had for cheap and is fantastic.

The mp 62 is fantastic and u can get a good conditon set for about 110.

The 53 will make u feel like a great golfer.

Update

I was able to take some time this week and hit MP33, MP64, MP53 & MP60's. The winner for me are the MP 33's w/ S300's. I'll be picking them up this weekend! The MP64's were very nice as well.

Thanks everyone for your input and offers, much appreciated!

Well I have two sets of MP-63's. Love them because they are tiny and have a little cavity to them. Growing up on MP-14's make me feel comfortable with them. They are about the same size. MP-4's are pretty sweet too if you want a blade. Than again I love my original T Zoids.

MP-60 is also a great club and the MP-30's. Just go bananas and get any Mizuno set that isnt huge. You will love them.

Gotta give us more information, do you want blade or CB? modern or classic? forgiveness or feel?

Otherwise you will get a separate recommendation for each MP model ever made

The one best all around iron that most embodies all of these attributes, offers the best feel for its forgiveness, is both modern and classic, is the MP 64

But if you're only tombout blades, you have about 10 different options

I agree with this comment. Without knowing what characteristics you're looking for, it's hard to suggest anything.

The OP's signature shows Ping G irons. Before my Mizuno MX200's, I was using Ping G15's and the transition to the MX200's was very positive. I'm using JPX EZ Forged now and love them. Hopefully one day I'll be good enough for blades.

Bought a set of mx 23 irons on a whim because they were $50 bucks total on eBay. They kicked my set at the time clean out of the bag. I went through taylormade burner +'s, r11, Callaway x forged, titleist 710 ap2 (worst of the bunch for me), Callaway diablos, and maybe another set in a 2 year stretch. The mx23's are still in my bag (nearly 2 years now).

There's nothing in the rule book that says you can't play drunk.

this is a timely revival.

i'm not familiar with mizuno vernacular, but i'm hoping to purchase a set of MP5s this year and was thinking about trying to find a set of older MB heads to throw on some spare shafts I have sitting around.

anything MP5x is a CB, and MP6x is a MB? unless you go back to MP3x...those are MBs too i think? i can't remember ever seeing an MP4x line, maybe they skipped over that numbering.

if i wanted to find a set of MB heads for $150 or so to dink around with, what should i be searching for?

Both, the 52/53/54 and 60/62/63/64 series are cavity backs, the 5x:s just have a bit more perimeter weighting and a pocket at the bottom of the longer irons. The 57, 58 and 59 fit in between these two series. Then you have the 67/68/69 that are MBs like the 3x. :) Currently they enjoy having 5 as the last number in the model name. :)

Ive played MPs since 9th grade (19 years and counting) and have yet to find a better iron anywhere else. 2 sets of MP14s lasted 6 years, a set of 37s lasted 11 years, and I've been using the MP4s for just over a year.

If you want a set of blades I'd recommend the 14 / 37 line over the 33s. Can get them much cheaper but there is zero loss in performance. For a cavity back Id say the 63 / 64 lineups.

well that's not confusing at all.

basically i guess this tells me i can avoid the 5x, and need to look at the old school 3x, and 67/68/69s?

i have two sets of x100s sitting in the garage just waiting for some heads, and one of them i'd like to be a set of mizzy's. i already floated the "new clubs" idea at home hoping to get the mp5 and was met with a resounding NO since i'm already going to bandon and we're adding onto the house.

so a set of used mizzy's for ~$150 is my consolation.

  • 6 months later...

Update: I've moved on from the Ping G30 shovels. No offense to ping - I still have a special place in my heart for PING.

The mp 33's have been great for me. Now I know what workability means. Now I know the sweet soft Mizuno feel. I lost a little distance at first but now I'm longer than ever. Once I learned to hit it correctly everything else came together.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions once again. There's something special about pulling out the Mizuno blade and having the guys you get paired up with look at each other like oh F. Now a bit more consistency in backing it up would be nice LOL. MP5 next?

at this point, I won't sell Mizzy sets even if I get new ones. I have 900 Tours on the way, and considered selling my 54/64 backup combo set, but never going to get what they are worth to me. I am going to have a lot of sets someday....
