anyone play notoriously unpopular irons?

My bag has remained mostly unchanged now for two years. 910 driver and 3wd, sldr hybrids, vokey wedges and a Mills putter. But the longest tenure in the bag is a set of 2008 (bought new) Taylormade tour burner irons. Closest I've been to being fit I suppose, bought at golftown after hitting a few sets at the time. While I've hit a few sets since then (titleist 755's, ping i15's to name a few) I have not been able to get rid of them despite them being quite an ugly club.

 

This iron seemed to be a unpopular one from taylormade that never took off, despite the popularity of the burner 2.0's

 

Anyone have a similar story of still gaming an old iron that even in its day was not very popular?

I am going to switch back to my set of Anser II irons as soon as I get them readjusted. They are really unpopular on this site because the were sold at a high price point.

TM Burner 3. They were my first irons. I've experimented with others but still come back to these.

I'm using Lynx tour blade irons. Don't know about unpopular, but iv'e never ever seen them in anyone elses bag.

I use Ping K15 irons. Never seemed very popular to me but I like the extra help they give.

I've never seen another set of the PGA emblem irons that I usually play with, but that could be because they're 30 years old.

There are a few TM iron sets that have stood the test of time (TP MB and MC), but once they release something new the popularity seems to jump from the last release to latest quickly.

 

The key is that you like them and they work for you. There is absolutely nothing wrong with irons that are a few years older, no matter who the manufacturer is.

Yep. I play with a few guys that could care less about the latest and greatest, or what shaft is better than another, and they can really play.

I still play a JPX EZ driver (which I have never seen anyone else use, ever) and a set of JPX 825 Pro irons - it has been a while since I've seen these in use by anyone else.

I had a set and liked them a lot. Then I became a club ho and the rest is history.

I wasn't on the forums at the time, so I can't say for sure that they were unpopular, but I still love my Adams a12 pros. Adams had a bunch of quality items they put out before they were bought by Taylormade. But, I think due to a poor marketing presence, they never really had much collective interest here on the boards.

I still play the Hogan Apex Edge forged, from 2001. I've rarely come across another club that felt as good, looked as good, and was as forgiving. It does have a bright "plink" to it, somewhat like a fairway wood, but a resonant, pure feel. I've had the longer irons in my bag almost continually, but I have experimented with other short irons and wedges, including the Mizuno MP-37 blades, which I've never seen anyone else play.

I don't know if it counts but I played a set of Tour Edge Iron-woods for a few years. I hit them fine but mostly I played them because they got some seriously funny looks on the course. 1-LW! Old dudes loved them.

Just made a switch to FG Tour V2s 3-PW from Wilson Staff. Today was my first outing with them after only 2 range sessions and I shot a 79, whereas I'm usually in the mid 80s. Putted very well but also had some incredible iron shots, along with some that weren't punished too badly when mishit. We'll see how long the honeymoon lasts, but I've never seen V2s in anyone else's bag.

I just played my first round with a set of MP-37s that I bought some time around the New Year. I really liked them, especially the long and middle irons.

I played ping zings for almost four years and never understood all the hate for them. I liked them a lot right away. The S and especially L wedge were fantastic.

I play Nike Covert 1.0 irons. Not very popular here, but they work for me!

One of the favorite Iron sets I've ever owned was a $35 dollar set I picked up at a play it again sports from Mizuno called the Quad iron set. I bought it as a lark as they were unlike any mizuno iron i'd ever seen. They were a hollow stainless iron with a regular flex dynalite irons that were softer regular flex than most but I found them to be surprisingly forgiving and had very nice turf interaction for my swing. I'm kind of bummed that I sold them to be honest.

Titleist 822 OS. Holy smokes were those things hideous. But they were first irons that got me to quit slicing, albeit with a lot of practice.
