I play Nike Covert 1.0 irons. Not very popular here, but they work for me!

Tour Edge EX-1

 

These have been my favorite irons for the last 7 seasons. I've tried a few other sets in that time, but nothing has been able to kick them out. However, I picked up a set of Rapture J's last month and actually got a round in with them. Still in the honeymoon phase, but the EX-1's may be in trouble.

My bag has remained mostly unchanged now for two years. 910 driver and 3wd, sldr hybrids, vokey wedges and a Mills putter. But the longest tenure in the bag is a set of 2008 (bought new) Taylormade tour burner irons. Closest I've been to being fit I suppose, bought at golftown after hitting a few sets at the time. While I've hit a few sets since then (titleist 755's, ping i15's to name a few) I have not been able to get rid of them despite them being quite an ugly club.

 

This iron seemed to be a unpopular one from taylormade that never took off, despite the popularity of the burner 2.0's

 

Anyone have a similar story of still gaming an old iron that even in its day was not very popular?

 

I know some folks who play those irons. I have never heard anyone say anything negative about them.

Bagged MP 57's up until last year. Not too much love for them and are viewed by many as the dog of the MP line but I loved mine, goes to show ya some people think cucumber taste's better pickled.

It's funny. In my non-WRX life, no one really cares that much about gear. Most people know very little about golf gear and don't have enough knowledge to actually label golf stuff popular or unpopular. Why, some guy even liked my Nike stuff. :) :) :)

 

Having said that, my Nike VR Split irons are unpopular here simply because of the brand.

I'm using Lynx tour blade irons. Don't know about unpopular, but iv'e never ever seen them in anyone elses bag.

I play the Lynx Black Cat irons. Like you nobody else plays them either.

Adams xtd for me. Wasn't too sure about the looks but I just really like how they worked for me so I took chance and bought them.

 

I am in a similar boat, got the XTD Tour "Els edition" in the bag and man I don't see them going anywhere.

 

They are so forgiving and the performance is great for me, even though they look like some type of alien robot! lol

I play a set of Nicklaus High CT irons I bought back in 06-07, first set of irons I ever bought. I've never seen anyone else play them and can barely find reviews online or sets for sale on ebay. I'll probably replace them soon with a player's set but no way I'm getting rid of them, just so easy to hit and consistent in terms of distance and flight.

I NEVER saw a set in anyone's bag even when they were released. I do however own a course record and 1 shot off the course record at three places with those irons. I still have them as a matter of fact, still with the Brunswick Rifle 7.0 shafts in them.

 

I remember at a money game someone laughing at the irons, an older gentleman said, well if he's here to play for money and paying those then I know he is a player. HA. I lost 50 bucks that day.

An innovative design, with their variable hosel length. The hosels got very short in the longer irons, producing a very low COG and sweetspot that was very centered horizontally...or even slightly towards the toe. Most other designs from then had a Sweetspot that was higher and towards the heel.

 

Did you find the mid and longer irons very easy to hit solid, especially compared to other designs from that era?

First day at my new club a decade back and the asst pro (a baller who's played in the CDN Open) pulls one out of my bag and says "you must be half decent to have these in play."

 

Thinking about it now, my best competitive golf season ever was with the 37's ... hmmmm

One of the favorite Iron sets I've ever owned was a $35 dollar set I picked up at a play it again sports from Mizuno called the Quad iron set. I bought it as a lark as they were unlike any mizuno iron i'd ever seen. They were a hollow stainless iron with a regular flex dynalite irons that were softer regular flex than most but I found them to be surprisingly forgiving and had very nice turf interaction for my swing. I'm kind of bummed that I sold them to be honest.

I played ping zings for almost four years and never understood all the hate for them. I liked them a lot right away. The S and especially L wedge were fantastic.

Maybe because they were one of the ugliest irons ever made. The topline looked more like a house brick than a golf club.

Not particularly. I could have hit a shovel on a stick in those days. I played MP-14's after the VHL's and 845's before that, I hit them all very well.

My irons are hated by so many WRX members....... Taylor Made SpeedBlades. Never understood the hate, I love the look, weight and feel. Thankfully I'm not obligated to change them due to popular opinion or I would be forced to buy Titelist or Mizuno.
