Do you let other people hit your clubs?

I keep a roll of athletic tape in my bag for blisters and things like that. I wouldn't hesitate to tape up the crown before handing it someone I don't trust. Too bad if they are embarrassed. Shouldn't have asked me to hit it.

Would I let a friend make a few strokes with Irons, wedges, and putter?...Sure, no problem there!

Driver, FW's or Hybrids...No way...Definitely Not...Too much chance of them making a sky mark on those!

I don't like it, but I'll reluctantly let a couple of my friends (that I know to be better swingers) hit clubs on occasion. A stranger asking I think is rude! If I offer after you express interest, fine. I would never ask a stranger and I would likely never say yes to a stranger. A putter, maybe, an iron, possibly... A driver, nope! Thinking about it, I have never asked anyone to hit their club. I've been offered and have hit other peoples clubs on occasion, but even that is rare.

I don't even let them CLEAN my sticks at my club. But tip well just for asking me each time. :taunt:

My clubs are tools and I can live with anything I do to them. But someone else's marks would bug me. I was on flightscope with a new 4 wood Friday and they didn't have a really shorty tee for FW's. Made the mistake of teeing it up too high and left myself a small stupid mark. No big deal. If someone else did it, it likely would bug me every time I looked down on it.

I have one playing partner I trust completely and we try each others clubs.

All my friends hit each other's stuff anytime they get something new but everyone is low singles so not really a chance of skying it. I'd let anyone hit my irons bc can't really mess those up. I'd proally let anyone hit my driver if they asked and just say as long as you don't sky it you can hit it. Usually if they aren't confident enough that they won't sky it they will say never mind.

Irons, ya, if I know/trust the guy. Woods....except for my buddy "driverwedge", not a chance. ......Had a "favorite" driver back on the early 90's, let a buddy I played hockey with take a swing and he put an screemin' idiot mark on the crown. Talk about pissed off....oh ya! My fault though, will never let that happen again!

Pals, sure. Strangers? I can't remember ever being asked, but I'd probably say no. Recently a friend of mine got a new M1 with an AD-DI6 $200 upgrade shaft. After I said something admiring about his new club, he just hands it over and said "try it". I have to admit I was a little fearful of putting a scar on his new club, but ended up striping it down the middle. I quickly handed it back and said "I hate it, but thanks for the test drive". I've been giving serious consideration to getting the identical stick for myself.

Had the exact same situation but it was my brother-in-law, brand new M1, smacks his drive 350 down 18 then holds it out for me to hit...I was so afraid of putting a skymark on it that I hit a wormburner about 3 feet off the ground, that was enough for me, went straight back in his bag...as for the original question - I don't have an issue letting guys try my stuff, not sure why they would want to though as it's usually the oldest stuff in the group I usually play with :P

I was practising on the range, when some stranger asked me if he could try my 3 iron. Ok, I said. Then he asked if he could borrow my glove. It was a warm day, so I said no and that I wouldn't lend him my toothbrush either. He looked baffled. Anyone of you let strangers borrow your gloves or is it just me who is strange?

I think everyone is within their rights to say no. It's your gear.

But... I have NEVER turned anyone down. I even offer to strangers when someone shows interest... It's supposed to be a game like that. Brand new, old, $500 driver, $30 wedge. Doesn't matter.

Clearly you have never had anything damaged. Can't help but wonder where you draw the line. Can someone come over who you really don't know and borrow your car? I mean, after all is said and done as long as they drove up to the front of your house, they know how to drive, right? So why not just toss them they keys and let them give it a go? It's the nice and human thing to do, right? "Hey! Is that the new Nissan Altima? Mind if I take it for a spin?!? Seems eerily similar to the whole "Let me hit your $500 driver" to me.

Why do I have this outlook? Simple.....

Guy comes up next to me on the range - this was awhile back. At the time I was playing an FT9 Tour - and I keep all of my clubs in pristine condition. No one had ever asked me to hit something in my bag. So the guy finally starts a chat session. Something about how well I was hitting it and could he give it a go? I was due for a water break so I said sure.

And he proceeds to put an idiot mark on my driver.

So....

After that little episode of my having been a bit naive, my answer is a fairly straightforward no. I am there at the range to either warm up for a round or work on my game. I am not there to let people I don't know take my sticks in hand and possibly mess something up. To add to the idiot mark, by the way, turned out he had sunscreen all over his hands. Took some work to get the slick feeling off of the grip from Coppertone Skymarker. (His unofficial Star Wars nickname) Can't help but wonder. It's supposed to be a game like what? Sure go ahead and mess up my equipment even though I don't know you?

Nah, don't think so. You hit yours, I'll hit mine, and if you want to hit something newer/better, go to a demo day and knock yourself out. (Ever seen the condition of many of the demo clubs? Says it all)

I will offer once in a while but if you ask the answer is no, unless you are my boss. I ask to grip clubs all the time just to see how they look at address but would never ask to hit one.

You have no idea what I've had damaged. And it's not my job to tell you, but you ASSume too much.

We're not talking about drawing lines. We're talking about mraningless golf clubs that smash into things at 100mph on purpose. Not cars or wives. This isn't drama club, although I know a lot of you guys want it to be. You wanna talk about sharing other things than golf clubs, start a new thread.

I knew someone was going to bring up a crazy corner case.

"A guy runs out of the woods, do you hand him your driver and let him beat you with it!!!???"

"I'm at the range and copper-tone Ken accosts me with his slick talk and bronze buffness. I was mesmerized but learned my lesson and now everyone is a bronze idiot!!!"

I can't help the fact that you did something stupid on the range and are mentally scarred from it. I choose a different path when negative things happen than knee jerking the world. And regardless, I would have handled it differently as my first post already said. C'mon man.. You didn't even shake his hand and feel the bronze before handing over your driver and now everyone is an idiot mark?

If it helps, your FT-9 Tour with the sky mark is only about a six pack difference in $$$ value from without it. But, I'm sure it's not the money, but the wound that will never heal that we are talking about.

Criminy...

Not a huge fan of strangers, but generally don't mind if it's an iron/wedge/putter. If I know them and know they are good they can hit my woods. You're not about to give me a sky mark and hand it back to me like nothing happened... Heard too many horror stories to try that.

Family, yes. Strangers, no. That's crappy that he even asked, that would be an awkward scenario. It's never happened to me, hoping it doesn't.

I let my friends hit my stuff, and they let me hit their stuff. I'm a bit wary about letting other people hit my clubs (well, mainly woods that might get a sky mark), but I have done it, and got my clubs back without a scratch.

The one time I did get a bit angry was one day at the range last summer, when a couple of regulars there came over to look at me and my clubs (I'm the only Westerner I've seen at that range), and then one of them started picking out my clubs from the bag without even asking, and then proceeded to hit them. Did not ask me once if it was ok. The really annoying part was that he was hitting them better than me. The indignity!

I actually have a friend who I beg and plead with to please just hit one of my irons. We play together a lot and over the last year every single time he comes over on the range he always looks at them takes one out of the bag and admires it but won't ever hit a ball with one drives me nuts because I know next round he's going to do the same thing.

Being a lefty I usually let others hit my clubs if something catches their eye. Of course I expect the same courtesy.
