Possible changes at Augusta.

Anyone see THIS article about Augusta National buying land from adjacent Augusta Country Club?

Deets :

  • Possibly to lengthen 13.
  • Or make "more room" for 11 and 12.
  • Initial offer was 1 million. Counter offer was $50 million. Settled on $27 million.

I agree with some of the talk I've heard this week. If you want to protect par out there, make 13 a 4. Play the tees up to 490 a couple days. Play it at 510 a couple days.

On the other hand, maybe this is a good long term decision for Augusta National. Say what you will about those guys, they don't seem stupid.

This is a map I made of the relevant sections. Haven't seen this in any of the articles. . .

I can't believe The Members would allow an Olive Garden so close to The Grounds!

Seriously though, what's happening at ACC during The Masters? Are folks creeping through the woods there to watch? Are there defiant members playing their own course like nothing's happening right over there?

I had no idea the courses were so close, thanks for putting up the map City.

$27 million for what appears to be a small parcel of land? I would venture a guess that you could buy the entire ACC for not much more than that.

Depends on your buyer ha

seriously, they could have bought the whole golf course, used a couple acres to change what they want and use the rest to build a members only petting zoo, casino, water park etc.

In one of the articles, they said a ball from ACC once wound up on the 12th while Tiger was putting. I do not recall this.

Probably just to have a buffer between ANGC and the other course. It's the only part of the course where you can see any semblance of the outside world, wouldn't surprise me if they want to further seclude themselves.

Glove: ML
Tees: 2 3/4
Towel: white
Repair tool: metal
Ball Marker: largest poker chip in the world
Iron headcovers: wait, what?

The feedback system is annoying

In that article, it says, "Once, an errant ball from Augusta Country Club ended up on Augusta National’s 12th green with Woods on the putting surface during Masters play."

From the stands on #12 you can see golf carts going down #9 on Augusta Country Club through the trees, so as someone said, it's probably has a lot to do with creating a buffer.

The anticipated purchase price of the parcel is believed to be $27 million. There are no facts here. I doubt they would pay that much for a few acres if that. Who in their right mind makes an offer and then agrees to 27 times the initial offer?

The person who believes the counter offer will 50 times the initial offer and is happy with with paying 27 times the initial offer?

Ha we parked at the Olive Garden last year and was a simple 5 min walk. Paid $20 to park there and were given a $20 Olive Garden gift card. No Brainer....

I for one really hope this is only about creating a buffer zone and not making big changes to 12 or 13. Both of those holes are great just as they are. Part of the enjoyment of the Masters is the fact that on many of the holes (12 and 13 included) every score is in play. Someone could just as easily go 2-4 on 12 and 13 as they could go 5-7. I love it!!! The Masters doesn't need to protect par, we already have a US Open to do that. We don't need another, IMHO.

I'm almost positive that my brother-in-law made the sign that Dufner is holding in your avatar. He owns a sign company in Auburn that makes DOT approved road signs. His company made the Auburn Gameday Traffic signs that you see around town.

Love that ACC came back with a counter proposal of $50M and eventually settled for 27 times the initial offer from ANGC. The guys at ANGC generally seem to get it right but it definitely seems like more money than sense.

Surely to goodness the 12th hole will never, ever, be changed. This is obviously designed to give them something more of a buffer and to extend the 13th. It used to be 485, it is now 510...what will it increase to? How long will the R&A and the USGA continue to tell us that the golf ball is not going too far?

When I lived in Augusta, I played ACC with a member. Amen corner was visible through the trees (not during the tournament). I took a ball and hit it over the trees on to ANGC, just so I could say that I played ANGC. There is no way an errant ball could make it over that distance and those trees; it took an effort on my part to make it happen.

NICE. Conspiracy theory. You're suggesting some scofflaw fired one onto ANGC during the tournament, maybe precisely when Tiger was getting there?

I was looking at my maps wondering how a ball could get there. It would have to be dead right off that hole that runs along Amen corner, AND clear the trees. Hilarious.

agree 100%. I think there was also talk of wanting a maintenance road behind amen corner. It does make sense. given the location of the creek, it looks like any major maintenance needed to 11 green, 12 green, and 13 tee would require driving across the course. I know that's a lot for such a small portion of the course, but it's probably the most famous sequence in all of golf. who knows. I'm sure they know what they're doing

Yes, it is very difficult to hit a ball from ACC to AGNC, unless you are doing it on purpose. I believe that AGNC just wants to lock up as much land as possible. I bet that they don't change those holes at all.

ACC's total assessed value around $17 million, of course that's for real estate tax purposes by the assessor. Land at a little over $2 million. Doesn't have anything to do with what the value is to someone who doesn't need to sell any land to someone who apparently wants it very much.

Augusta National feels it needs it bad enough to pay for it and you either pay the price the seller wants or you don't. God bless America.

Changing 13 to a par 4 is a terrible idea imo. I also think it's an absolutely terrible idea for them to lengthen 13, the best part of The Masters are the roars on the back 9 on sunday, I don't want to see guys hit 3w, 7 iron, wedge into 13 all day. Leave it as is it's one of the best holes in golf.

They won't just add yards without making other changes to the hole, and it won't become a boring 3 shot par 5.

You would have to do some massive reshaping to make driver a viable option for a lot of guys. The only reason Bubba, DJ and those guys take driver is cause they can fly the corner to the widest area. Most other guys are hitting 3 wood so they can turn it over, they aren't going to be able to get home with 3wood off the tee anymore.

Couple of thoughts:

* (Re: Olive Garden comment) Pretty sure there's also an Arby's, Wendy's and a Krystal all within about 1/4th of a mile from the grounds.

* The "buffer" argument doesn't make much sense because 4 green and 5 tee box is about 4 steps from a ROAD, much less a quiet golf course.

Yeah, but that stretch of berckman's road is now owned by Augusta National. They opened up New Berckmans Road to traffic yesterday.
