Possible changes at Augusta.

Changing 13 to a par 4 is a terrible idea imo. I also think it's an absolutely terrible idea for them to lengthen 13, the best part of The Masters are the roars on the back 9 on sunday, I don't want to see guys hit 3w, 7 iron, wedge into 13 all day. Leave it as is it's one of the best holes in golf.

I don't think they will lengthen it significantly, only make a smaller percentage of the Masters field reach it with ease.

Hey chopper, what are you hitting there?
Callaway Rouge Sub Zero 9°
TM SLDR S 17° 4-wood
Mizuno MP Fli-Hi 21° driving iron

Dynacraft (?) 24° 4-iron
Titleist AP2 710 5-pw
Wilson FG Tour PMP 52, 56, 60°
Rife 460 Tour Blade

After how long does being "out of form" turn into "a bad golfer"?

They won't just add yards without making other changes to the hole, and it won't become a boring 3 shot par 5.

You would have to do some massive reshaping to make driver a viable option for a lot of guys. The only reason Bubba, DJ and those guys take driver is cause they can fly the corner to the widest area. Most other guys are hitting 3 wood so they can turn it over, they aren't going to be able to get home with 3wood off the tee anymore.

I guess we'll all have to wait and see, but if some players have to improve their shotmaking, I'm all for it. I just think you are afraid of something that we don't have enough information about to fear. Guarantee, it will be risk/reward and they will keep it a fantastic hole. It's not being redesigned just because of a few guys, in the long run.

I probably am overreacting to change. But I won't back down till they prove me wrong.

Ya have to remember also that it is not just the yardage. Except for a few outliers like Bubba they are flying the tee shot into the bank so do not get a lot of roll, the second shot the ball is about mid shin for a right hander(slight exaggeration I know but way above the feet), and the green with the shaved banks is not the easiest to hit nor is it real easy to get up and down from the green surrounds.

Couple of thoughts:

* (Re: Olive Garden comment) Pretty sure there's also an Arby's, Wendy's and a Krystal all within about 1/4th of a mile from the grounds.

* The "buffer" argument doesn't make much sense because 4 green and 5 tee box is about 4 steps from a ROAD, much less a quiet golf course.

Well Arby's has the meats, Wendy's has a cute kid, and I'm sure Krystal is a fine establishment though I am unfamiliar with it. But the OG has gone downhill faster than Lindsay Vonn with no broken legs, at least the ones in the upper mid-west.

Well, I get to go to the Wednesday practice round this year (sorry I draw that like a gun, but am really excited!) - we will look for your tent and protest sign over on number 9 at Augusta Country Club. I'll toss you a pimento cheese - pretty sure the bulldozers won't run during the Masters, so you should be safe this Spring. :-)

I get the passion because of love for the Masters, and I keep saying this, but in general, cost is no object and that includes getting stuff done right over time. They know what the significance of 13 is!

Whoa just remembered, didn't the two main characters in Miracle at Augusta sneak into ANGC from Augusta country club and play the national? Maybe the story spooked the members!

13 can use another 30 yards or so.

Bubba is hitting flip wedge into a par 5 and regardless of what the purists might say - That's not major championship worthy.

I wonder if those folks at ACC are going to have a membership distribution of a few hundred thousand per member or do something stupid like re-invest it in their facilities???

Unless they want to risk losing their tax-exempt status, they better invest it in their facilities. 501©(7) organizations are typically social/fraternal clubs whose net income or earnings cannot inure to the benefit of any member or else it will jeopardize their status.

This kind of thing is currently happening to a lot of sporting clubs in southern Ohio, except the income is from mineral-rights leases to energy companies that want to come in and frack the shale.

Yeah, but that stretch of berckman's road is now owned by Augusta National. They opened up New Berckmans Road to traffic yesterday.

Ahh, good info.

We had a club fairly close to me that sold a tract of unused land for around two million to a hospital corporation. It had been organized as a non profit corporation in the 1920s or 30s and they made a distribution to the current members. Then.....a few former shareholders raised &@$;. It was all settled but not pretty.

In that article, it says, "Once, an errant ball from Augusta Country Club ended up on Augusta National’s 12th green with Woods on the putting surface during Masters play."

The guy probably turned to his playing partners and said, "Watch this"....followed by a 45 degree alignment change to the right. I'll bet they didn't go looking for that ball.

I think Augusta has made some rash decisions in the last two decades. If you look at the evolution of some of the holes, it is barely the same course. This decision to lengthen 13 seems to be reactive to Bubba's drive (and very few others) just as when it was Tiger-proofed. News flash, Jack was cutting that corner in his prime (and the FW was much wider). I wonder what would have happened if they made huge changes in 1965 to limit Jack's advantage, after he won 3 of 4, like they did after Tiger's back-to-back in 2001-2002 and Bubba's recent 2 of 3.

EDIT: #17 is barely recognizable. In 1986, Jack pulled his tee shot, but since there were no trees he had a clear shot to the green (and famous putt).

The 13th at Augusta could use 50 yards. The good folks there are desperately trying to prevent the famed course from becoming a pitch 'n' putt.

Spieth broke records with his flatstick, not his driver. They better slow down those greens and take out some undulations...

The shorter the approach is, the shorter the iron used for the approach. Shorter irons equal closer proximity to the hole. Closer proximity equals a higher percentage of putts holed. Higher percentage of putts holed equals lower scores. Difficult concept.

I would much rather them narrow 13 than lengthen it or make it a Par 4.

Could they perhaps narrow the fairway on 13, grow in some thicker rough (excuse me, second cut) or try a fairway bunker instead of adding length?

They could. But I'm sure they are considering the end results from a successful drive which finds the fairway. They probably believe the approach shot on that hole should be played with a longer iron.

I also think it's an absolutely terrible idea for them to lengthen 13, the best part of The Masters are the roars on the back 9 on sunday, I don't want to see guys hit 3w, 7 iron, wedge into 13 all day. Leave it as is it's one of the best holes in golf.

They can still elect to move the tee box up all they want for whatever day , just gives options.

Why not get some trees planted closer to the left side of the tee box to prevent cutting too much of the corner?

Better yet, tell everyone who wants to play in the Masters that they'll be using a rolled back ball? They're the one tournament in the world that can do it. The individual ball makers can quickly get on board and supply their sponsored players with the "tournament ball" or their player can play something else. Who is going to say no?

I do think too many trees have been put in by Fazio. He should put trees in ..... but just not so many .... right now it offers limited recovery plays .... more options for aggressive plays out of pine straw with some workable gaps ...

case in point Phil's famous 6 iron on the 13th

17 and RS of 11 are good examples of overdoing the trees and narrowing the options. Also forces a shape to the player and a lot of the holes weren't doing this previously

Jones and AMac thought AGNC was all about the angles, like a Scots links. You were supposed to be rewarded for blasting a driver down the risky line
