Nike Vapor Fly Pro Irons Thread

Warning on VFP length:

The specs for the VFP's state that the stock 6 iron length is 38.25". This is really long for a stock 6 iron. I currently play Mizunos and their stock is 37.25". I found this odd but since I play my Mizunos at 1" over standard I ordered the standard length thinking they would be the same. Well they got here and the 4-9 irons were all .25" shorter than advertised (38" six iron) and the PW and AW were .5" shorter than advertised. I called Nike and the person I spoke with knew why I was calling immediately. He said that Nike measures their irons differently than everyone else and therefor what they call 38.25 everyone else calls 38. He also said that the advertised PW and AW lengths are WRONG on the spec sheet on the website. They are actually .25" shorter than advertised and therefore .5" shorter than the rest of the golf world thinks they should be. This is my first Nike purchase and so far not going very well.

This is known fact that Nike has always measured iron lengths different. It's not specific to the VFP they've used this method for a long time. They are probably right on the spec sheet incorrect. My set has the STD 1/2" difference club to club and my AW is just a little bit longer than my engage 52 which is 35.75. So the spec sheet is probably 1/4 too long on the wedges plus the Nike measure method.

A typical PW from a normal length set would be 35.25" going off of a 37.75" 5 iron. So the VFP PW @ 36" (taking error and measurement process) is still .75" longer than standard. But you have to realize something. These clubs do not follow the old school standard 5iron length/loft of old. And follow the new jacked loft and weired lengths trend as of late.

The Nike VFP 7 iron is the exact same length as a standard Mizuno 6 iron and the loft isn't too far off either. The gapping is a bit different in the VPFs than other 3-P sets.

The mizuno stock 6 iron is 37.25, the Nike stock 7 iron says it's 37.75 but it is actually 37.5 using traditional golf measuring techniques (i.e. laying the club on a bench top club length ruler)

Right, I'm just warning people who don't know about Nike's unique measuring technique to subtract .25" from the advertised length.

On another note....the VFP 2 iron with a graphite shaft was amazing. Man when I put a good swing on this stick its a cannon. It also feels much better "swinging" with the lighter shaft vs the steel. And the transition from the 4 iron to the 3 wood is much better for me with graphite in this club.

When I demo'd them, I took note of the length. They were 1/2" longer than the PSIs, AP2s & Ping i. I was hitting them like Anthony Kim, choked down 2" since I prefer my irons shorter than standard.

I am also a big fan of these irons. Went through a phase last year late when I couldnt hit anything straight with any distance at all. Hit these in the spring while hitting a few different irons and it was the best shot I'd hit in months. Trunked them and I still love them.

I am actually impressed with the finish so far. I usually play weekends and hit a few balls off mats because that is the closest range to my house but these have held up quite well.

With all respect to those loving these irons, I’m going to have to pass on them. They simply don’t bring anything to the table that my previous irons aren’t doing already. As others have mentioned, the shafts are ½” longer than traditional irons. So another way of looking at it is that the vapor fly pros are essentially soft-stepped 1x. I had mine custom ordered with KBS Tour shafts, and they ended up matching my previous set that I had soft-stepped the year prior, but with stronger lofts.

I was hoping to squeeze out a few extra yards with the VFPs, but even with the stronger lofts, the distances were pretty much the same. Probably most disappointing to me is that after playing these irons almost exclusively for 2 months, the leading edges of the 6 thru 9 irons had worn down to the chrome.

More than likely, everyone’s opinion will be framed by the irons they’re moving from. So if that’s the case, the VFPs aren’t a bad option if coming from something considerably less advanced or you just simply love the black/blue look. Personally I didn’t experience enough of a distance or forgiveness enhancement to warrant making the switch.

Bottom line:

Pros: Initial appearance

Cons: Finish wears quickly under regular play, Average distance.

Has anyone tried bending the lie angle on these? I need to bend mine a bit more upright. Do they bend OK? Tape the hosel?

I hit these the other day and fell in love with them. Where should I go or who should I call to order a set of 5-pw,aw? I do not care if they are used, the cheaper the better. Maybe even 6-pw,aw. I dont hit my long irons enough to justify purchasing a entire new set, I have had shoulder surgeries and hit a lot of hybrids and woods. Plus I have set of AP1's that I gave to my brother and he did not need the 3-5 iron so I hit those if needed.

Better than most people think or give credit for

They feel really good for a non forged iron.
