Grayhawk and We-Ko-Pa 36 Hole Deals

So I've read many of the course reviews and suggestions from this forum. So thanks to all of you! With your help, I've narrowed down my choices to Grayhawk and/or We-Ko-Pa. I'll be there in mid-April with the family and in-laws so I get two mornings to play. I was thinking the 36 hole deals at one resort or Raptor and Saguaro separately. Cost choices are Grayhawk 36 - $335, We-Ko-Pa 36 - $280, or Raptor/Saguaro for $190+$155 = $345. The We-Ko-Pa 36 seems to be the best deal, but seems like I should try to at least one other resort based on the suggestions. I'm playing as a single, and the Grayhawk 36 allows singles, not sure about We-Ko-Pa 36.

Anyway, any thoughts on a 36 hole deal or getting to see two different resorts? I'm starting to realize that the cost difference isn't much. Lastly, I plan on taking the first tee times ~6:30 AM each morning. Any concerns walking these courses as a single at the first tee time?

I would probably play one of each if you aren't playing 36 in one day. Also, I would sign up on Grayhawks' email list as they often send out specials. For instance, next weekend they are doing $99 all you can play.

If you were doing 36 in one day, I would go Grayhawk everytime. To me, it's the best place in Phoenix to spend a day golfing. But, if you aren't going the be there all day I say mix it up as Saguero is arguably the best track in Phoenix.

From what I can recall, I don't think that Grayhawk is that great a place to walk (some treks between holes) think WeKoPa Saguero is more doable (more hilly but think tees and greens are generally pretty close together).

Finally, I wouldn't shy away from the Talon course at Grayhawk. Raptor is more difficult, but I have a ton of fun on Talon too.

Get on Grayhawks email list I bet they will have specials in April that will get you on for around 100. Very rarely see anyone walk at GH doesn't seem like it would be too difficult though. Same thing with Wekopa very rarely see any walkers imo would be tougher walk than GH.

I've walked Saguaro the majority of the times I've played it (maybe 12 out of 15). It is a pleasant walk.

I've walked Talon a few times as well but people there think you are insane when you do it. There are couple of spots where it is a PITA (9-10 is an example) but for the most part it is pretty flat and an easy walk. I think I walked Raptor once but I can't be certain. If I did it was a long time ago. When I used tot walk Talon all of the time the only person that they said walked with regularly was Jason Kidd. This was back in the late 90s.

I went and played Grayhawk just this past week. If you are a single then you are in luck. I played on a Thursday morning and scheduled my tee time that Monday. I played both courses for $200. The week of go online and look at their online specials they drop their prices significantly. My first round was $109 (Talon) and then i scheduled the replay rate $85 (Raptor) for the afternoon. Course, amenities, and staff were awesome. Phil's grill is a great spot to hang out and have a pop after or between rounds. I have heard WeKoPa is great and still want to get there to play. But Grayhawk was just to good to pass up great course, great deal, and great conditions.

Hey thanks for the tip, I "updated" my tee time on Grayhawk Raptor and got it down to $109 like you mentioned. I'm playing that on a Tuesday morning, and We-Ko-Pa Saguaro on Thursday morning. Didn't get a discount on We-Ko-Pa, but did get the early bird rate prior to 8 days out.

For those of you that replied thank you. I had a great two rounds at Grayhawk Raptor and We-Ko-Pa Saguaro. I was not expecting much, but fell in love with desert golf. Both rounds were amazing.

Raptor - Had the first tee time of the day, and got there early enough to check out the clubhouse and hit a few balls before my round. I got paired up with another single, and other than holes 9, 10, and 11 had a terrific round. I hit 12 of 14 fairways, and for the ones that I didn't hit I was not in the desert. So I had no problems with cacti, rocky sand, etc. I went double, quad, double on 9-10-11 and ended up shooting a respectable 86 for me on this course for the first time. Greens were in great shape, firm and fast. I would love to spend a day here hitting balls, playing both courses, and enjoying the clubhouse.

Saguaro - Again, the first tee time of the day, and got paired up with two guys. The driver abandoned me, and I only hit 4 of 12 fairways. I played the purple tees, but only two of the four monster par 4s were playing true to distance. I didn't have any problems on these holes except #18. The length wasn't an issue, more than the desert. I scuffed up a few clubs trying to bail out of the desert. I learned quickly to take my punishment and just get back to the fairway. The stones and rocks didn't allow for clean contact. I also stepped on a Cholla cactus and I think I still have a thorn in my foot. The greens here were faster and truer than Raptor. But both courses gave me a huge appreciation for desert golf and the sweeping vistas on Saguaro were amazing. I bunted around on this course and still scored the same as Raptor. Go figure.

I did get a chance to play some twilight golf at the Wildfire resort, since I was staying close by. I hit the front 9 on Faldo, and the back 9 on Palmer. There were only a few large pockets of people that I had to play through, and got through the holes in blazing pace. I can see why the recommendations were against this place compared to playing Grayhawk and WeKoPa. For the price, Wildfire is NOT worth it. Why play here among houses, condos, and the hotel when you can play the other two for basically the same cost? Greens were slow, tee boxes chewed up, etc. The service level wasn't the same either.

Can't wait to plan a trip back here.
