MEMBER TESTING: The BIG TaylorMade M2 Irons review thread

Recommended Posts

I had a chance to spend some time on the range yesterday and got 18 in today. I made sure that I gave the M2 ample attention.

For the record my current Irons are Ping S58.

Looks: This iron has a much thicker top line than I am use to looking over, but it wasn't distracting. The color of the irons actually frames the ball nicely.

Flight: The trajectory is medium high for me. I would say that my current 6 iron launches slightly higher, however the M2 is easily a 1 1/2 -2 clubs longer. I was hesitant about distance claims, but I didn't know how to credit this club without it. I hit a 198 yard 6 iron that rolled through the green. The shot shape for me the iron just wants to go straight, (not a bad thing) I could hold on and produce a slight fade and did manage a slight draw when I really worked it.

Forgiveness: This is a easy iron to hit, the ball pops off the face with a lot of zip. Even on less than center hits the shot holds it's line and distance didn't seem to be compromised by much at all.

Feel: I would say that the club feels lively, but never harsh. Feedback is not immediately evident, early on with this iron it was a challenge to know without looking at the club face that I missed center contact. As mentioned shots hold their line and distance is only marginally compromised, so no obvious clues there. After awhile I picked up on the slight difference in feel and could tell when I had a miss. That is both good and bad I guess.

Control: This iron is drastically different than what I currently play, so I did struggle with control. I had no luck trying to control the trajectory, the ball seems to explode off the face and I never noticed much difference in trajectory even when I tried to knock a shot down. On that same note the iron powered the ball through the wind, my own six iron paled in comparison, so maybe it's not necessary.

Conclusion: It is difficult to evaluate how a iron set would play with just one iron. The M2 6 iron is a beast and if a golfer is distance challenged look no further. Where the verdict is still out for me is on scoring. I wouldn't consider my self the longest hitter in a foursome but I also wouldn't say I am distance deprived. My iron game is constructed more around control than distance, so theM2 would likely take some time and reeducation for me to learn to play it. I would also say that the M2 6 iron would be more of a comparison of my 4 or 5 iron than my 6 iron., so I am not sure I would bag anything longer than a 5 iron in the M2, but again that would take more time and a introduction to some other irons in the set. If I was a younger player coming into the game this would definitely be a iron makeup that I would pay attention to. Later as I get older and distance becomes more of a challenge this will likely be a iron type I consider. I think TaylorMade has done a fine job of engineering a very forgiving iron that excels in distance. A playing partner referred to it as a 4iron with a 6 iron label, if that is the case with the M2 TaylorMade sure has made a 4 iron that is a breeze to hit. As for me I would never say never, but this is not a iron choice for me right now.

I got mine. Had to get to the range today. Conditions were horrible. 37* F and at least a 10 mph wind in my face. It was darn cold.

Looks: I really like the way it looks. I could game it on looks easily. Looks smaller then it really is. Like the finish a lot.

Sound and feel: just sounds weird and don't like the feel. Seems harsh. Granted it was really cold and I was hitting range rocks. I will try it again when it is warmer.

I seemed to lose the head. I was almost hitting the Ping ie 7 iron as far.

So how did the IE 6 iron hit compared to it?

I found mine sitting at my door when I got home from vacation. I did not receive notification in my Fedex app because the street name was incorrect (but still close enough to get to me). I currently play the RSI2 irons and when I compared the shaft length, it was the length of my 5 iron. As other have said, it reminds me of the Burner irons look, which I played the original. When I try it out this week I am going to compare it to my TM M1 4 rescue along with my 5 and 6 irons. I will pull out my Ernest ES14 and get some numbers.

So I took this to the range a couple of times now. Loft is between my current 4i and 5i.

Distance: well it's long of course similar to my 5i as I would expect.

Feel: I'm not crazy about the feel, when I missed I couldn't tell where.

Ball flight: mid to high, it wants to go straight , seems to be low spin , I'd have to hit this on the course

General: I'm no one to usually care about offset, but this club has an obscene amount, if it had better feel I may be able to get used to it. The shaft is way too light, I could not get a feel and seemed to have more misses than normal.

I was able t get out and really test the MD2 today. While the loft is a 5 iron I found the distance indeed longer than my Apex 6 iron. The ball flights were very close. This distance difference was as much as 15 yards. I was surprised that I was able to get the ball flight as high as I did on a repeating swings with the continued increase in distance. The sound of the ball coming off the club head was different but one could get use to it. I had a friend with me who does not like taylormade clubs, however, he gave a try and was amazed at the distance and how high he was able to get the ball with this club. He also like the look of the club and said he would have to consider making a switch to these irons.

When I put it on ES14 the spin was roughly 200 higher than my Apex, launch angle was 3 degrees lower and the smash factor a little higher.

I will be going out later in the week and giving it more testing, but over all I was impressed with the club. :golfer:

I went back out to the range and once again amazed that the MD2 produced 8 to 10 more yards than my Apex with the high ball flight that it has. On the course I found my Apex and the MD2 were preforming about the same the MD2 was just a bit longer. It appears to be a good club for those who are having distance problems.

Still haven't had a chance to hit a ball with it. Was supposed to play this morning and was going to take it with me, but it was cold, windy and raining, so no dice there. A few comparison shots of the M2 and a Srixon 745 as that's what I'm playing now.

Tested it at the range tonight.

The good: Flies high. Easy to hit. Plenty of forgiveness. Easy to hit draws (at least this is good for most golfers). I've never really seen the big distance gains with taylormade irons, but it was clear to see the ball was traveling a little farther (3 yards or so) than my Cobra Forged Tec 6 iron. Overall cool look if you don't take size into account (I used to own the original burners).

The bad: Really big. Shaft needs more weight to increase consistency (for me). Club feels empty. Even when you hit the sweet spot, you don't really get any positive vibes from it. I can't stand the whistle it makes during my downswing. It happens late enough in the swing that it doesn't actually effect your swing, but it was really annoying. Shaft is pretty long.

It doesn't bother me that the loft is stronger than most because it's so easy to launch. With a proper fitting, it may very well be possible to get this dialed in, but at the moment my Cobra's and my previous i20's are more accurate. The hollow feel, lack of feedback, and whistling are the biggest negatives in my opinion. But I'm not the target golfer for these irons. Those looking for SGI probably don't have a problem with lack of feedback and feel since they aren't really hitting the sweet spot all that much anyway. These seem to be a great option for someone like my dad. Shoots around 100 and needs extra distance.

I'll bring the m2 with me to the course and update if needed. Here are a couple comparison photos of the m2 and forged tec.

Thanks GolfWRX and TM!

I took the first swings of the season with the new M2. My swing was very (cough) Rusty, but the club was super easy to hit, with high flight and consistent flight path. To be charitable, my current 6 iron penetrated the wind better and was easier to (cough) "work". The offset is Yooge for me. I hit it ok on the range, but my first swing on the course was fugly. The second swing was shweet. I need to compare more to decide if the extra offset helps, hurts or doesn't matter. I didn't notice any odd sounds form the swing but the wind was pretty fierce. The head felt heavy to me. It might be a lighter shaft that I'm feeling. My current 6 iron is a Wishon blade, 32 degree loft. Yikes! The thicker top line did not bother me. The M2 shaft is the same length as my 5 iron. I watched the M2 "explanation" videos on the TM site (especially the one about "loft jacking debunked"). Sorry Josh. I'm just having trouble buying this. I'm not in the market for new irons. If I do get new irons it will be because of a desire for different shafts. Right now I just don't know what a switch from blades to a GI head and adding all that offset would do for me. Having to guess what my gapping would be between my irons and my hybrids and irons and wedges is just too much to ask.

Tested it over the weekend with my father in law. We both thought it was a well balanced club, and felt good in the hands. And it looks incredible. We also noticed and liked the high trajectory it produced.

However, my FIL said that it consistently missed the target for him...must be something wrong with the club?!?! lol.

I will post more when I get a chance to take a look at it more seriously. This was one of the first times out, so maybe not the best time to review a club since I am still shaking off the rust and I was tending to hit the ball fat. Unless the club is meant to make 6 inch divots...jk.

Got mine. First thing I noticed was the offset. Larger than I'd like. Second I noticed that I was sent R-flex when I play S-flex.

We had snow on the ground this weekend. Supposed to hit 60s later this week. Going to try to hit it on a simulator first to see some numbers and then I'll see about getting it out on the course (if the rain holds off!)

Well received my Taylormade M2 6 iron stiff flex steel shaft on Friday and got to test it out this weekend. Here is my review.

I have some Taylormade clubs in my bag now

About me. 6'2" 320 lbs. handicap 6 and hit my irons on a very low trajectory. Which leads me to why this iron set might fit the bill with my game.

I dint hit th ball to very far for my staure. But I do hit a bunch of greens in regulation and my short game is tight.

My club set up has always included a 5,4 hybrid. I think I will have to rework my setup if I purchased these irons to meet yardage gaps but being the club ho I am that's not a problem.

Looks: right out of the box these irons look great. I do like to two tone color of the iron head. I can only explain it like it looks like a club maker over torched the head. The club face and top line are in line with the game improvement irons I have used.

Feel: in general the feel of cast irons have always been the same for me so I pass on this one.

Performance: I know everyone is saying these irons have to loft of a 4 iron but I will let that go and get into what it has for my game. I could never hit a 4,5 iron to save my life. Always a flat shot that could never hold a green unless it had rained for a week. Lol

With the M2 6 iron the added height is just what I was looking for in a iron. Hit it for the first time 165 yards to green. Nice divot and landed about 15 ft short of pin. Rolled out a few feet and left me with a nice birdie putt. Of course I did not make it but that a story for another review.

Hit it a few more times and every time the same high ball flight with minimal rollout when it hit the green.

Only issue I could see is when hitting into the wind I did not get a chance to hit knockdown shots with it. We will see. It's always windy in Texas.

Final views. I think I will look into getting a set of these M2 irons and maybe going back to a 4-w setup. I really like the ball flight I get from this iron and if the rest are the same I will have the set I was looking for.

Thanks Taylormade and Golfwrx for the oppurtunity to test out the new options.

PS. Shame on all of you that are selling your free 6 iron on eBay. There is a flood of them on there. Never even gave it a try. Hopefully they have a way to see who does that and stops sending y'all free nice equipment to try. Ok rant over.

Mine just showed up today. I will get out and give it a try either later today or tomorrow as my schedule allows as well as the availability of my buddy's Trackman.

I got yelled at by the girlfriend for ordering something else, and I had no idea what she was talking about. Thankfully I can show her this thread and get off the hook since I really didn't know what was going on.

I will say it's going to be a little different looking down at a GI club compared to my Titleist MBs, Cally MBs, and Muria Baby Blades. It also has the same FST Reax High Launch shaft that others have gotten, which will be a change from the hardstepped KBS TourV stiffs that I play now.

Got mine in the mail today as well. It was a great weekend, 2nd daughter was born on Friday, and we got home yesterday. While sitting in the couch this morning, I saw a fed ex truck in the driveway, and asked my wife if she had ordered anything, and she said that she did not. To my surprise, I went out to meet the fed ex guy and was greeted by him holding a Taylormade box. I am very excited to be selected for this review, and will try to get out to the range in the next few days to compare it to my current 6 iron, 716 AP2.

First, thank you to TaylorMade and GolfWRX for this testing opportunity. Thanks to being on the road for work, I was able to hit the M2 6 iron against my current two sets of irons on a Trackman.

First a bit about me: Play to a 6, irons are a strength (putting and driving hold me back). Played for many years with Eye 2+ irons so game improvement offset clubs are in my blood. Currently I have Mizuno JPX 850s as my steel shaft set (with the XP 105 stiff shafts) and Acer XVs as my graphite set (with Idrive shafts).

About the M2:

Looks - I have no problem with the offset but it is noticeable. The attempt to hide the thick topline (sort of a two tone thing) actually drew my eye to it. Color is nice and the graphics, etc. are usual for TM. Certainly the looks would not preclude me from playing them.

Feel/sound - Before mentioning contact, I should mention the sound. Yes, that whistling mentioned previously is very pronounced. It took me a few swings to confirm that in fact the sound came from the clubhead itself and not from something else in the shop. I think it comes from air rushing through the back stabliizing bar on the toe side - it protrudes a good deal from the back of the club, leaving a hollow area. It took me many swings before I became used to it.

The contact was solid but vague and the shaft felt a bit hollow if that makes sense. Discerning where exactly I had hit the ball on the clubface was not easy - had to look at the face to confirm after a few swings.

Shaft: I'm not sure if the FST 88 is a variant of their 90; it does feel a bit harsher and firmer than the 90 (not the KBS 90 but the actual FST 90) and even a little hollow. The feel of the XP 105s in my 850s was worlds better (maybe my favorite steel shaft of all time though).

Results:

I was fit late in 2015 for the Mizunos after overcoming some injuries that pushed a move to graphite. The M2s were not yet available at the time of fitting which is unfortunate as I could have even better comparison data.

Here are the specs and averages from the three clubs hit (average clubhead speed ranged from 82-84 mph):

TM (37.625, 25*, 62.5* lie angle)

Mizuno (38.25, 25*, 62.5 lie angle)

Acer XV (38.5, 26*, 64* lie angle)

I'll round off the numbers (I hit an even dozen with each):

Club Ballspeed Launch angle Spin Peak Height Descent Angle

TM 113.7 14.1 4412 21 41

Mizuno 114.1 14.5 4865 23 43

XV 110.4 15,3 5128 25 45

It became clear after my fitting this past winter that I was on the cusp of hitting the Mizuno 850 too flat (went to a hybrid for a 4 iron) and these numbers are almost exactly the same as in the fitting. That suggests to me that I hit the M2 six iron (both the Mizuno 850 and the Acer XVs referenced here are 5 irons) too flat to hold greens reliably. Also, the dispersion with the M2 was the worst of the 3 with misses being both ways (I do not think the shaft is a good fit).

I'll get pitcures of the 3 clubs up here at some point.

Fedex delivered a box just now. A club box. My first thought was "holy **** did I go into some kind of fugue state and buy something from TaylorMade?"

After a quick look at this forum, it's safe to say I was one of the members to recieve an M2 6 iron for review. Rad!!!

Here's some initial thoughts after unboxing!

If nothing else, have an endorsement by the current #1 and all around fan favorite is a great marketing idea. From a creative standpoint, everything about the M-series (M1 & M2) is clean - from the typeface to design elements and look.

Good looking iron. Carries over the carbon fiber look from the drivers/metals. Very light in the hand, almost feels like you're holding a club with a graphite shaft.

Some comparisons with my Nike Vapor Pro Combo 6 iron:

The club itself is a 1/2 inch long from what I play my 6 iron at. Not a big deal for this review, I'll just choke up.

Grip feels nice, standard tour velvet. Overall, the club feels lighter than my VPC. I'm not very knowledgable about it, so I don't know if it's a different swingweight, or balance point, but in the hand it's lighter.

Took it in the back yard for a few swings... The "lightness" of the club makes me feel like I can swing it faster. Feels nice.

Top line and sole are noticeably thicker. This is not a blade, nor a "player's iron" with a thinner top line. This kind of stuff doesn't bother me, but admittedly, I have gotten quite used to the VPC topline, so I notice when I look down at something thinner or thicker.

Face looks slightly larger, more contact area.

Decent amount of offset with the M2. I haven't looked up any specs of the M2, but I would guess it's probably a stronger loft than my VPC, as that seems to be the trend.

Will be taking it out to the range in a bit, will report back with some more thoughts!

UPDATE: 4/12/16

Took the club to the range yesterday, hit it along side my VPC...

Overall, definitely not a fan of the offset of the club, it just doesn't agree with my eye. That being said, the ball gets up high and long. It's got 4 iron distance for me (most likely because I believe it plays the same loft as a 4 iron...)

When you catch it clean, ball feels nice. Prefer the VPC feel of the face, there's a softness that I didn't quite find with the M2. I attempted to mishit on the heel and toe of the M2, and was moderately successful. You can definitely feel when you mishit. I also feel like if I hit it fat, the club kinda bounces and it ends up being a "fat thinned" shot if that makes sense. Was off a mat so that might be why.

All in all, I think for someone who likes GI irons, they'll be able to appreciate what the M2 does. Launch high and long. The shaft is light (almost creates a weird feel of club balance for me), so that could potentially help a high cap gain some speed.

Will try to swing it a bit more, my brother wants to swing it as well, so I'll update with his thoughts too, then I'll pass it along to someone else on here.

So I just received the TM m2 6 iron today and was baffled at where it came from. Then I stumbled upon this thread and realized I was picked to give this club a whirl! I will have to put it up against my Nike Vapor pro combo irons and my brothers Vapor speed irons tomorrow. From my first initial impression, I think it's a nice looking golf club. Really like the darker finish, however as others have said. There is quite a bit of offset that I am not used to seeing. I will come back with more after I hit it tomorrow!

Got mine today. Initial impressions:

Look: they look cool. Nice finish and good looks in the cavity. I'm not a fan of the top line thickness, or the offset, but honestly these weren't made for me anyway. For some like my Dad or brother in law, these would be perfect. I chalk this up to the fact that not every club was designed for every golfer.

Feel: Again, not made for me... But I'd say they are a bit harsh feeling, clicky on impact. Stated differently, they are solid, but not soft.

Initial performance review: only hit into a net so far... Will get outside this weekend. That said, they seem to be very easy to hit solid and my impression is that the sweet spot is large and forgiving. Launch was definitely lower than my MC 6 iron but tough to fully review until I see ball flight this weekend.

All in all, thanks Wrx and TM for the opportunity! I have some Jr. Golfers to pass it around to for their reviews after I'm done with my review!

Starting this to save a spot. Hit a few balls the other day in a very brief trip to a local course, initial review is that this thing is a bomber that is easy to hit for an iron with only 25 degrees of loft. Easily 20 yards longer than my current 6 iron with nice trajectory. Will update with a better review once we get some good weather. Thanks to golfwrx and TaylorMade!

5/16 update: Let my Dad borrower this for a few weeks, he couldn't get the feel for it even though it's the perfect club for him as he can barely get his ping eye2s off the ground. Once I got it back I took it to the range and all I can say is wow. Super easy to hit (for a 5 iron), 6 iron trajectory with 5 iron distance. It's no joke and I could see it being a lot of fun playing with a full set of these. Probably not the club I need at this point in my game but a set of these would completely change the game for someone in the target market. I'm going to put it in the bag in place of my 5 iron and drop a few balls on the 195yd par 3 at my local course and see how it goes, will update.

Ok, had a chance to put the M2 6 iron to the test on the range and course. Here are my findings, and that of a 10 or so handicap, so no pro but no hack either. As previously discussed, the loft is way jacked up so on the course I switched the M2 for my MP54 5 iron.

The looks don't do it for me, but I do like the darker finish. The top line is crazy thick and even with the two-tone finish its still obscenely large. The club is significantly longer than my 5 iron, and the shaft is a bit too light for my liking. I think they could find a sweet spot at say a 90 gram standard length stiff shaft. The club does make a irritating sound due to the plastic in the cavity. The offset is a bit over the top and does make me look twice at my setup.

The ball flight was higher than my 5 iron and about the same distance, maybe 3-5 yards more carry but with less release. The longer shaft requires me to choke down on the club. The massive club head makes contact easy. I hit several beautiful shots with the club including a tee shot into a 177 yard par 3 that plays uphill and into the wind. Stuck the shot within 10' with only about 3'-4' of release. It was very easy to hit a high draws.

Overall I think the club was a great SGI, easy to hit, long, high ball flight. This would be a great club for anyone lacking distance or having trouble getting the ball in the air. If I had a friend who wanted to take up the game, I would definitely recommend the M2's. It would make the game more enjoyable. If a newbie can buy a set and hit a 7 iron 170, and hit a 5 iron that will stop on a green they will fall in love with the game.

Thanks again Taylormade and GolfWRX for the opportunity to review the M2. It's been a pleasure and as a lefty I want to say anytime you need a lefty test dummy, I'm all over it!!!

Glad I found this thread! I was wondering how/why a random TM 6i found it's way to my doorstep this past weekend. Needless to say, I didn't hesitate tearing the box open to find a new M2 6i nicely wrapped inside. I had to work (watch the Masters) all weekend so I have not had the opportunity to get out to the range or course just yet. Initial impressions as follows:

The dark finish is really nice. I have always liked dark and satin finishes as they resist glare more than a polished chrome. This finish is still polished so I will have to see how it is out in the sunlight.

Shaft is the same as everyone else, stiff flex for me. I play s300 in my normal clubs and have always hit the ball pretty high. I am interested with how this club/shaft combo will play in our Oklahoma winds. It was a solid 25-30 with gusts into the upper 30's this past weekend so it is important for me to be able to flight the ball down in these winds.

The club has a thick top line, but that doesn't bother me too much.

The only problem, to me, is the offset. There is offset and a lot of it. Unfortunately, I have always had an aversion to clubs with offset and I still cannot get over it. I play a draw and find offset clubs to accentuate that draw to the point of detriment. I am working on lessening my draw so maybe the offset will not be as bothersome.

Final initial thought is more of a prediction, and that is I assume all of these clubs were sent at standard lie. I usually play 2* flat so I will probably need to have it bent flat before giving it a proper test.

P.S. I did a similar test as this a few years ago with a Cleveland iron. They send it to you to test and you pass it on to another person. I will probably try to do the same. If anyone here on the site wants to test the club after I have finished, PM me and I will send it on to you.
