Keeping the upper body back

I can't emphasize how much the concept of "shifting weight to the front foot" has been difficult to recover from. In the process of trying to stay back, I had the best ballstriking and distance year I've ever had, but I'm still having to resist the deeply ingrained urge to slide forward toward the target. Anyone else battling this?

I liked the reference to "Ed Sullivan" shoulders at 6:40. That instructor is pretty old-school! Probably no one under 60 would get that reference.

Yes, I have this problem. Terrible. Mine is from years of trying to 'hit down on the ball'. So, if you slide the upper body forward, hitting down on the ball is easy. Where your video shows the left shoulder over the ball at impact, my left ear is over the ball at impact. I've learned to play with this move, but it causes all sorts of other issues in the swing.

I'm willing to bet that you have a long backswing as well?

 

What helped me was the thought of the front of my right shoulder should start to move forward as my swing feels halfway back. By doing this it helps to keep my arms from over running on the backswing and as a result i would slide my upper body forward to make contact with the ball. By shortening my swing through moving the right shoulder down and through sooner, my body naturally gets in the correct position of keeping the upper body back since there is no longer a need for the slide.

 

By moving the front of the right shoulder forward your body, assuming you are an experienced golfer, will naturally shift left and this has the added benefit of getting the shoulders to work on a proper plane because they were probably dipping down as a result of your upper body shift.

Very cool. Thanks. I absolutely had to shorten my swing as well. My swing is now what most people would consider short. Before, I would go past parallel with a 9 iron. Now I don't even get to parallel with a driver and hit it much longer.

 

That right shoulder forward move is something I've tried, but mostly just end up rotating really flat the downswing and pulling my arms across my body with no extension.

I tried the basket in between the legs drill today and man, it was like magic. I felt like I stayed in hitting area through the shot. Never had that feeling before.

They use a ball there, but if you don't have one you can use a range basket

Idea of keeping right leg from kicking in (external rotation) has helped me a ton. That drill will get it done.
