I usually shoot 90 around Carnoustie, so I would be happy with 95 at Augusta!

 

Depends what conditions. Saturday conditions I will be more than likely over 100.

People in here are underestimating the greens. There would be plenty of 4-5 putts out there

If it was just a normal day and I played with some people I know, I probably could break 80 if I hit most of the greens, otherwise break 85

 

IF it was Tournament conditions, I would be happy with breaking 95. You have so precise with your irons. If you are a yard left or right from your landing spot might miss the green by 20+ yards

I have a very difficult time with big, heavily undulating greens. I'm guessing I would have twice as many four putts as two putts.

I think a lot of people are underestimating themselves.

 

I played it last year a week before the masters, so close to tourney speed greens (which is to say, fastest I've ever played on by mile (plus they somehow break more)), with a lot of Sunday pins.

 

Some caveats - It was my first round of the year, so I was rusty, played the member tees (makes a big difference on several holes). I'm a scratch and I barely broke 80. I also gave myself some 2 footers (you don't want to hold up anyone there, as they probably have the wealth to ruin your life!) and I know I would've missed a couple of those!

 

So if I call it an 80, nearly all of my lost shots were due to greenside and putting. Fairways were wide open and rough isn't rough. Pine straw wasn't bad if you had a window. Par 5s were all reachable with long irons (except 8). The yardage difference between pro tees and member tees is considerable on several holes - for example, I was hitting wedge into 11, where pros are 200+. But I three putted (and four-putted once - 9th green) enough to know I'm not gonna do much worse than that.

 

So I'd say, with the wind, slightly faster greens, tourney pressure, and added length, and diabolical greens I wouldn't be able to do much worse on (I'd lag everything outside five feet!), it probably would've cost me a half shot per hole. Call it 88.

Best players in the world are posting high 70s, Kevin Na shoots 85 Saturday and WRX members are breaking 90. That makes sense.

I played Whistling Straights in 04 within 2 days of the tourney. I played from the tips under PGA major tournament conditions both rounds, and shot 77 and 81. What that says about today, I'm not really sure.

I've played greens once with speeds that could be comparable to what it was like for the pros this weekend at Augusta and it destroyed my score. So if I broke 100 then that would be like shooting par to me.

My ordeal would be how many balls do I need to bring..I am sure I would be loosing a bunch, I would be thrilled to break 120, I would be 3 and 4 putting for days!

Playing the back tees with tournament conditions I'd be lucky to go around under 150 playing the ball down and putting every putt.

I'm 65 years old, so I couldn't play from the back tees very effectively. From the back tees I couldn't break 80 because there are many holes that I couldn't reach in 2.

 

Move me up to the members tees at about 6400 yards and I could break 80 there. Just have to play there a few times to get used to the speed of the greens and where to play the ball. It's just a golf course. I doubt it's any more difficult than Oakland Hills or Crystal Downs and I've shot under 75 at both of those courses with limited play.

I read somewhere that the course rating was estimated at 78 with a slope of 137. Considering that this doesn't factor in tournament conditions, or the gusty winds, I'd be very, very surprised if even a single digit handicapper could keep it under 100.

I was +3 at the time and playing very well. Give me the best week of my life and maybe I make the cut. Top level tour pros are shooting in the mid 60's. I am a quality player, but that's a different level.

I was there on Saturday. It was blowing a steady 20-25mph. Number 1 was almost dead into the wind. I watched 4 of the early groups hit approaches, and 4 of the 8 players hit hybrid or fairway wood into #1. Same thing at #4, but more than not were hitting hybrids or fairway woods. Almost all the guys hitting irons into 4 came up short. In Saturday's conditions I don't think I could have broke 110.

I think if I wanted to shoot the lowest score possible I would only use a 7 iron, 56, and putter. Keep it in play, slowly but surely. Score would be well over 100 though.

I'm sticking to my 90. I think I could add a stroke to every hole and play it as that. Take 3 to get on green and two putt on par 4s. Going at the green every hole hell no but actually playing for bogey I could do it.
