Jersey Golfers

Played Warren brook on 5/1 played 17 and 18 .....then the front nine for a total of 11 holes.  They said everything should be back to normal in a few weeks. Took a look at a couple of the holes I could see and nothing jumped out as reason to close those holes but mabye it was already mostly recovered from what happened.  A Couple of the holes that we did play had tarps on parts of the greens....but underneath the tarps everything looked OK.   If I had to guess based on what I saw that day they are probably back fully open.

I'm playing Ballyowen on Tuesday afternoon. It's been 9 years since I last played it. Anyone played there this year? How were the conditions?

I played Wild Turkey at a work outing last Monday (retained my company trophy for the 2nd year running, nbd). Course was in pristine condition and the workers there told me Ballyowen is in even better shape. Enjoy

And I played Crystal Springs on Saturday and the conditions were really good as well. (that course is so hard, glad they re-rated it).

Balloyowen yesterday was in PRISTINE shape. Not sure what they do differently with their greens but they were running much faster than when I played Crystal Springs on Saturday. And Crystal Springs greens are usually pretty quick.

I shot 84 at Crystal Springs yesterday. Far from elite. However, what I'm most proud of is the 38 I shot on the back.

Has anyone noticed at how wide open tee times are this year? Where is the COVID golf boom? Did all the significant others tell them no go this year? 

 

I was just looking at tre times for all the Crystal Springs courses and you can still get pretty good times. 

 

Great Gorge really surprised me though. Every 4 some slot was available starting at 12 pm. 

 

Prices have also gone up too. (Almost 90$ to play Great Gorge??) I wonder if that's part of it too.

I've been playing at rock spring and its been tough getting tee times.  I wouldn't be surprised if alot of people cut back on the golf expense with the state of the economy, which is leading to more open times

I played Heron Glen for the first time and Monday and was really impressed. It was probably the best conditioned public course I’ve played in NJ. The conditions of the greens were next level. Really fun course but some blind landing areas off of tee shots.

Never played it, but it looks nice. But $140??  That's Wild Turkey / Ballyowen fees.

Flanders has been a joke. 5 hour rounds are regular. I got lucky and played with 2 others only last week and we got through in 3:45. Other than that, it's been painfully slow... they are filling everything up and I have to book 5-6 days in advance to get my preferred start time of 12 or 12:10.

5 hours at Flanders? People walking slowly? Assuming most are walking, the cart fee is a rip off.

I haven't ridden there yet, waste of money. It's mostly people searching for balls since trees come into play on mostly most holes if you're not relatively accurate I think. 

 

Waiting 3-5 minutes before every tee shot, plus standing over your 2nd shot for a few minutes here and there really adds up.

I haven't played there since 2011, but i cut my golf teeth on that course the summer of '96 and I do remember how straight you had to be. I also remember dreading Gold #1 and walking up that hill. It's easier now I'm sure since it's the 1st hole and not the 10th. 

 

I should go back and play it during the week. I live 15 mins from it.

I'd rather play there than minebrook! Everything else is too far away for my schedule so I'm stuck either hitting off dirt tee boxes or slow play.

Minebrook is literally around the corner from me, I've played it twice. 

 

I just go to Crystal Springs, the quality is worth the drive, IMO.

Not in the cards for me unless I take time off work. Right now, my pre-specified golfing hours are between 12-5pm, Friday. It's easy to just hop off the computer from work right before lunch, cruise over to Flanders or MB and play a round, then go pick my kiddo up.

 

Maybe in several years I'll have weekends more to myself, but for now I don't mind. Weekends are for family stuff.

So how are the conditions at Minebrook you ask? Judge for yourself. 

Ball in the middle of the fairway and the 18th green (they all look like that).

Heading to Philly from RI next Monday and always like to stop for golf on the way to break the ride up with an afternoon round of golf, especially after getting through NY. 

 

I've done Mansion Ridge, Crystal Springs, Wild Turkey, Ballyowen, Rock Spring, Architects, Royce Brook, Neshanic, & Heron Glenn. I've even done some on LI by taking the ferry, like BPB, Cherry Creek, Montauk, Islands End and wouldn't mind taking ferry over with a tee time someplace. 😉 (BPB was a walk-on single as a chance)

 

Any other suggestions?

Random question for the thread, but does any course or club offer a practice membership or something similar in North Jersey (Bergen Co. area)?  If not, does anyone have a go-to range or practice facility. Closest course to me is Hendricks Field but it doesn’t look like they have a range. Thanks!

It's probably too far for you, but Black.Bear, which is part of Crystal Springs has a Driving Range membership.

The driving range in Wayne by the Willowbrook mall isn’t that far from you.

MilVet and North Jersey resident, but work in midtown Manhattan. I’m still pretty green to golf, but play my rounds at Preakness Valley GC.
