KBS Tour vs Nippon Modus 120

Recommended Posts

I am looking for someone who has tried the KBS Tour and Nippon Modus 120. I have played the KBS tour in the past and have had decent results. Sometimes feel like I get a little extra spin. The Nippons have received a lot of positive comments recently but I have only been able to hit the Modus 105. The Modus 120 is a stock shaft for Bridgestone but I won't have a chance to try them. Trying to decide between the KBS Tour and Modus 120. Can anyone compare ballflights, spin, feel, etc.

I had more spin with the modus then the kbs tours and had the modus in X flex and kbs in s+ soft stepped once

I play kbs c taper in my mizuno jpx825 and tested both the ns pro modus 120 and kbs tour for my AP2s. Ended up with the modus as it was a bit lower launching for me (I'm a high ball hitter) with a nice smooth feel.

Spin rates were slightly lower but had better dispersion as well.

Feel is always subjective, so you are going to be the only one that can really say for sure which one you would gravitate to.

In terms of physical properties.

There are some weight differences, which you shouldn't discount. The 120 starts around 112g in stiff. The KBS is around 120 stiff. You'll probably see around that 8g+- difference when cut to length. It's is enough weight to possibly cause a difference for you.

Have to look again when I get home, but IIRC, the 120 is a bit stiffer overall in the tip section.

I take back what I said on the profile ;) I got that wrong.

As I mentioned, I looked once I got home. The KBS tour, profiled in the same flex, is stiffer overall through the profile than the 120. Comparing the 120 X flex to the S flex KBS tour is a pretty close match as the profiles follow pretty close to the same bend profile...every other variable being excluded, I would expect similar ball flight results. Nippon profiles just look to spec out about a flex series softer. That could work to your benefit or you might want to try a higher flex to attempt to match the KBS.

There again though, never can really ignore the weight and the human element of it all.

Physical properties say it should flight a little higher, but it's all going to depend on the individual and how they react to the shaft as much as anything. In the end, the could flight higher or lower.

This is why it's best to choose whatever shaft fits you the best, the ball flight can be taken care by adjusting lofts of the irons.

Tried both extensively. I am currently gaming Kbs tours but tried both in srixon 745/945 irons. Both are "smooth" feeling shafts. Modus launches lower ans spins a little less. Take into acount that under equal conditions Kbs tours swing weight will be 1.5-2 SW points less due to weight profile

I would agree.... kbs tour stiff was lil stiff for me while modus feels just about perfect......since modus has soft mid and butt it may just make the tip feel stiffer than kbs though.....kbs feels pretty consistent through whole shaft whereas modus you can really feel the tip being stouter than rest of shaff.....Modus is a great shaft if it fits, I didn't care for kbs much

I currently have Modus 120 S in my Z945's and can't stand them. Switched to KBS Tour's a few years back and MUCH prefer them over the Nippons. Partially my fault as I read how good they were all over the boards, so figured i'd give it a shot when I ordered my 945's. It's totally my bad for ordering blind haha. I ordered the Nippon's in S flex and even though they "feel" stiff enough, they just go high and balloon on me. Swing speed with a 6 iron for me is 95mph, have played KBS Tour S+ and KBS Tour X SS1 in many sets and they feel perfect for my swing. Maybe the 120's in X would have been a better fit?

Everyone's swing is different obviously so YMMV, but I wish I had a chance to hit the Nippons first before placing an order blind. Struggling with either just selling the irons, or getting some KBS and having them installed.

This is why you have to try them but I always loved the s300, tried the KBS 120s and hated it, and now have the Modus 120x and love it.

Never tried the Modus is stiff but compared to s300 I don’t think it feels any stiffer, but I gained some distance and love how it loads in my swing.

Good luck

I've had a Modus 120S in my 5 iron for a couple of weeks. Just ordered a KBS 120S. I hope it's true about the KBS profile being slightly stiffer because the Modus feels a little too soft for me. I've also recently tested out the Modus 130S and that one feels like a stiffer DG S300, slightly lighter in weight.

Love the modus 120x did not like the KBS. The tips on the KBS have been known to bend. I like the feel of the “whiteboard” profile - softer in the butt stuff tip - and the modus is that to an extreme. Fees soft and smooth but it’s not soft at all. Just has a great feel. Some people really don’t get along with it but those that do love it

The tips on some KBS C Taper shafts have had reported bending issues. Have never heard that applies to all KBS shafts. Great shafts and IMO the full KBS lineup has so many options you can really dial them in.

Modus 120 is lower launch by a decent amount. However it has that flat flight, steep descent angle look of your best KBS tour strikes. It feels a bit more stout to me too. So if someone wants a Tour type flight albeit at a lower launch and lower peak height, it's one to consider.

I just came out of a set of Z785 with Modus 120 stiff.  Loved the heads but the Modus 120 always felt off to me.... got in a fitting booth yesterday and the KBS Tour 120 really shined for me.  Dispersion was miles better and it just feels more stable throughout the swing.  I have been playing the $ Taper 125 in some S55 that I built, may be a touch more than I need but I think the KBS is better for me.  The Modus in stiff just feel too loose and light.  I found I had a tendency to pull shots and on the LM, the KBS tour seemed to help eliminate that.  Was reading on here that the Modus 120 stiff has a very similar profile to the DG R300.  Great feel but may want to take it into consideration.  I was swinging my 7i around 87 mph fwiw.

That’s how my fitting went in 2020. I liked the feel of the Modus 120, but the kbs were just hands down better for me

This may matter to some:

  • Modus 120-Stiff weigh 114 grams.
  • KBS Tour Stiff weigh 120 grams

Modus 120 only weigh 120 in X-Stiff.

KBS carries it's mass near the butt and is considered a counter-balanced shaft.  Modus 120 carries it's mass nearer to the tip and is considered a traditional balanced shaft.  If you are going to be playing standard weighted heads but play 1/2" to 3/4" over standard length in your irons, the Modus will seem heavy when installed.  The KBS play about 1.5 swingweight points lighter and may feel more comfortable.

Does anyone know the difference between modus 120 X and 120 TX? And how they compare to Project X 6.5/7.0?

In the long Nippon thread, that question was asked of Nippon.  Their response was that TX was about 11 cpm stiffer than X.

And Modus 120 is a completely different shaft profile than Project X.  It's like a one flex softer, exaggerated version, of DG.

I think a lot of it depends on your swing and the club. The KBS Tour I felt kicked way too high for my liking. I originally did not like the Modus on the original ZX7, but hit really good shots with the ZX7 mkII for some reason. As it stands, they felt a touch softer and launched a little higher and spinnier than my Project X LZ's.

I went for an iron fitting today I’m 65 clubhead speed 87 with 7 iron

It came down to those 2 shafts initially numbers were great with KBs but as I hit more balls it became apparent that the modus 120 maintained 6100 spin and 19 descent angles on Mishits which we all do lol

the KBs had a definite kick and felt head heavy while the modus was smooth and I did not have to work anywhere as hard

Moved from KBS Tour 120S to Modus 120S in both my prior T100S and now T150's.  For me with ball striking being best part of my game, I just never got along that well with the KBS, really had to work to time them up as they are more counterbalanced. As a fade player, my misses tended to be a little weaker than I thought they should have been, again for my swing.

Modus just allows me to time things up better, I getter a little higher height with about same amount of spin.  My misses have improved greatly, instead of missing short right of the green, they are now missing little short but still carrying the green.  My Titleist fitter mentioned that heavy loaders don't get along very well with the 120's that a Project X type profile normally work best for those swings.

They are very different shafts. Modus works for me sometimes but I also can get a high, floaty flight with it that is not optimal. The Modus 120 stiff will always swing weight heavier due to the overall soft profile but with a stiff tip. It is actually the lighter shaft at 114g. It’s also not that stiff, much closer to DG regular flex in stiffness.

KBS Tour stiff has a high balance point but at 120g it feels better to me. It is the stiffer of the two with more of a linear unloading as opposed to the kick of the Modus, which has a much softer handle and is overall softer. I get better stability out of the KBS designs but probably also because KBS Tour is a lot stiffer than Modus 120 stiff.
