Thanks for the posting...I've only played 5 of the Top 50 You Can Play (Finley, Lonnie Poole, Tobacco Road, Mill Creek and Masonboro) so I've got a lot of catching up to do! I am somewhat surprised Tot Hill Farm was not listed.

With your avatar you haven't played Duke?

Cobra F8+ Diamana Blue S
Taylormade M1 15º, 19° Matrix Black Tie S
Royal Collection BBD VS, Shimada S 4-P
Axis1 Tour, 35"
Ben Hogan 51º

It just hasn't happened yet! I've hit balls at their nice range but have not yet played the course. Certainly hope to play it this summer.

I actually prefer Cardinal at CCNC to Dogwood. But the rankings always have Dogwood higher. Any ranking system that has Wade Hampton #10 in the state just seems odd.

As for Governors Club, played in the CGA event there yesterday and they were some of the slowest greens I have ever played. Pro Shop said 9 but it could not have been over 8.

I have played the following;

Pinehurst #2

CCNC Dogwood

Pine Needles

CCNC Cardinal

Mid Pines

Old Chatham

Rock Barn

Prestonwood Highlands

Pinehurst #9

Governors Club

Macgregor

Dormie

Duke

Hasentree

Bald Head

Leopards Chase

Prestonwood Meadows

Tigers Eye

Mid South

St James

Currituck Club

Lonnie Poole

TPC Wakefield

Croasdaile

Brier Creek

Tobacco Road

Prestonwood Fairways

Nags Head

Overrated For Me

Old Chatham

MacGregor

Prestonwood Highlands - and I am a member.

Pinehurst #9

Governors Club

Underrated

CCNC Cardinal

Dormie

Hasentree

Bald Head

Tigers Eye

Tobacco Road

I love Rock Barn Jones (to me the best value course in the state) - but the Jackson course is Medicore at best.

Played - at Old North State on Wednesday - new greens and conditions are very very good at the moment. Looking forward to playing Providence CC for the first time on Tues

I also love Rock Barn, really cool course and lots of great holes out there with the water.

I played UNC for the first time this past week, as a State guy this is hard for me to say but I really enjoyed it. Greens were meh 2 weeks from being punched which is a little concerning if I played out there regularly. There was one hole, I think 10 which was an odd dog leg right, they had the tees way up I ended up hitting 6 iron 7 iron. That was the only hole I thought was an odd placement. But a really good track.

I love Finley too but #10 might be the worst hole in all of NC...

Good to see another Wolfpacker on here! Maybe it's being 5 min from Rock Barn, but that course is just awful to me. You can't hit driver on half the par 5s. They tried to fit some holes into the space where they didn't fit. I played in the Pro-Am every year for the Champions Tour and it was almost unanimous among the Pros that they didn't like the course. In fact when it was flooded and they had to switch to the Jackson course for 9 holes, the Pros told them not to switch back.

Played a lot of courses at Pinehurst and Dormie Club is way too low on that list. I'd say it was a much better course than #4, and a little better than Pine Needles (both of which I really like). Have not played #9 and was thinking of trying it this year - given the feedback perhaps I will give it a miss :)

Governors Club is rolling at a 12 for the NC Amateur this week btw...

Caddying for my son is the greatest thing in the world.

As others have mentioned, Tobacco Road is way underrated. So are Sedgefield Dye and Forsyth CC now that it's been renovated. High Point CC is the best private club value in the entire state, without question. Finley and Dormie are underrated too.

To me the Landfall courses are overrated, as are the Grandover courses.

I think you will really enjoy Cape Fear and Forsyth CC. Starmount was a disappointment to me compared to the other local private clubs.

Melo -speaking of values Sedgefield dye is down to 320.00 a month these days (very limited access to the Ross course)......crazy for a course that good

Really really enjoyed Forsyth other then the last three holes....moved Cape Fear round to the fall

I agree! I looked into joining as a full junior member last year, $2000 + $400 per month for full access to EVERYTHING. I would have had 4 years at those rates before I needed to decide whether to become a full member at 40...then my wife told me we were having child number 3 and my dream of PGA quality CC membership in my 30's died a quick death.

I was equally impressed with High Point CC. Wonderful course and facility, at the time you could join for $0 down and like $300 per month.

Congrats on baby #3.

HPCC is a really good course, but I'm not sure I could be a member there. It's a solid golf course that is in really good shape, but there's about 3-4 holes out there (mostly on the back 9) that really sour the course for me. Not to mention the pool area (which is my selling feature to my wife) is not at the same facility as the championship course.

Anybody know what the membership costs are for Maple Chase on the north side of Winston? We just built a house in Rural Hall and I'm looking into options in that area. Maple Chase seems to be the best course, but not sure if it's the best value.

Taylormade Qi10 10.5* - Mitsubishi Diamana T+ 60x
TaylorMade Stealth Plus 15* - Fujikura Ventus TR Blue 7S
TaylorMade UDI 2 iron - Tour Only Project X HZRDUS 105g 6.5
TaylorMade RSI 3 iron - KBS C Taper X
Mizuno JPX 919 Forged 4 iron - KBS C Taper X
Mizuno JPX 919 Tour 5-PW - KBS C Taper X
TaylorMade Milled Grind 3 54* SB - KBS C Taper S

Maple Chase is only about an hour from me. Played it when it was still Pine Brook CC but not since new ownership took over. It has a lot of similarity to my home course. Same course designer with both clubs opening within year of one another, if memory serves.

I'm not sure what the membership dues or fee structures are though. Good luck, MM
