Shorten from butt end will soften irons, correct?

Please confirm for me that shortening (from the butt end) a set of irons from 1/2" over to standard length will make them softer not stiffer. Shafts are Project X.

Please expand on that. Not exactly sure of insertion, but assuming 1+1/4 to 1+1/2 inches. Clubs have normal hosels.

 

I remember reading that the butt end is the stiffest part of the shaft and cutting it makes the shaft play softer. How does hosel depth affect the shaft that is already in a head. I can understand taking the shaft from a deep hosel to a shallower hosel, or a bore through. But, don't see how it affects the shaft if the shaft remains in the same head.

I could go into all kinds of detail on this topic, but let's keep it simple.

 

The shorter shafts will frequency higher and be stiffer. However, assuming you add the necessary amount of weight to the head (lead tape unless you want to pull the shafts and use tip weights), this will balance out and they will play around the same.

 

If you don't add weight to the heads, the swingweight will be lower, which in turn will make then shafts feel stiffer.

 

I would just cut them, get them on a swingweight scale and then add lead tape until they are right. You will be fine.
