Just been looking for some new wedge shafts and have found someone selling a few of the proto Nippon shafts - 2G18, ORA, E11 nice and cheap.

I'm playing X flex Modus³ Tour 115's in my irons so was wondering what the best match would be for my SM8 wedges?

I tried the Tour wedge 125's at a demo and got on well with those.

Should I be looking for a slightly heavier shaft than my 115's?

Thanks

Steve

The Modus 125 iron shafts in an S or X flex might be a great option as it's just a heavier version of the 115s. I also play the 115 Xs in my irons and have DG TI S400s in my wedges, I like the heavier feel as I play mostly partial shots with my wedges.

@markheardjr  Any idea on the LSL3 protos?

Not sure, but my guess would be some sort of LSL/Tour115 tweak. Maybe slightly heavier? Like a Tour125 with stiffer midsection. Tour115 IMO is more of a Tour105 with a firmer mid. Its not a heavy shaft. If it has LSL in the name I'm sure its stiff/firm/stiff profile. Could be tiny minor tweaks to weight or kick point.  LSL2 was a stepless shaft. LSL1 had steps. Tour115 has steps. This could also just be the proto code for the final  Tour115 retail shaft as you can clearly see steps in the photos.

Anyone have any info on the jpro stepless model? @markheardjr? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

I don't know about a Jpro? But there was a Stepless version of the 125 called the "A." There may have been a stepless LSL / Tour115 model that said "J?"
J." I believe there were other single-digit coded shafts, I want to say I saw a "C" once. "J" sounded familiar, thought I saw it from a Japan seller once?

@markheardjr these are the J's I was asking abt

Saw 2 sets pop up on eBay too, I think in Stiff. Seller says they are 118g raw which is inline with my memory of it being a stepless Tour115 ish type shaft.

Those on ebay are mine lol. They unfortunately didn't work out for me. They did feel like a tighter 115 now that you mention it. I didn't get along w the 115 either 🤷🏻‍♂️

Did the J prototypes remind you of any common shafts? Any more feel info compared to modus 115?

DP - Proto to the retial Tour120

ST - Proto to the retail Tour105

Bit of a curiosity on this one as it relates to this designation as used on the GOST prototype shafts and how (and if) this translated to the retail line up. I own a couple of these, and we see a couple tour, but this promo image throws a wrench in what I assumed and creates a few questions.

ScreenShot2024-06-28at12_22_32AM.png.9a776d05db0b6a0bfa9d55616178d7db.png

The retail GOST lineup is:
- GOST Hybrid S - 89g

- GOST Hybrid Tour S - 91g
- GOST Hybrid X - 100g
- GOST Hybrid Tour X - 110g

And the prototype GOST lineup based on what i've seen is:
- Prototype Hybrid 09 ST
- Prototype Hybrid 10 ST
- Prototype Hybrid 10 DP
- Prototype Hybrid 11 DP

All the prototypes have been listed as "X" flex.

We see the ST prototype on tour via Zalatoris and Scheffler who both have Prototype 10 ST's. Assuming 10 = 100g and the ST designation is associated with the Tour 105, it's safe to say that this is or became the Hybrid X retail shaft. The Prototype Hybrid 09 ST could just be a lighter version of that same shaft and thus equivalent to the "Tour S" retail shaft, since lighter with steel within the same profile always = softer. This leaves a question mark around the "S" retail shaft and how it's only a couple grams different, which suggests it's likely just different profile, perhaps an as yet seen Prototype 09 DP.

The DP variants are where it gets weirder, because we see a Prototype 10 DP pictured above, and I recently acquired a Prototype 11 DP which I didn't even know existed. It weighed 110g uncut so it is right in line with the Hybrid Tour X retail shaft. Obviously there is only one retail 100g model so that suggests the ST and DP variants were tested and was one chosen. Which one though, we don't know. It feels likely though that with a confirmed mix of 105 and 120 profiles among the prototypes that there were one of each in each weight class, 09/10/11. Six prototypes whittling down to four retail releases:

- Prototype Hybrid 09 DP - Hybrid S

- Prototype Hybrid 09 ST - Hybrid Tour S
- Prototype Hybrid 10 DP - Unreleased?
- Prototype Hybrid 10 ST - Hybrid X
- Prototype Hybrid 11 DP - Unreleased or Hybrid Tour X
- Prototype Hybrid 11 ST - Unreleased or Hybrid Tour X

That is all speculative of course, they could have picked one profile (likely ST) to use throughout. We won't know unless someone has inside info.

Yes the Proto GOST ST has the Tour105 profile and the GOST Proto DP has the Tour120 profile. They found most pros were using Tour105 in long irons and the GOST ST became the retail offering. Tour105 would promo a higher flight and medium spin which is what most want in a driving iron / hybrid. DP aka Tour120 would be lower launch and spin and counterproductive to what a hybrid is meant to do. But, some use driving irons for lower shots so DP would be good for those low lofted driving irons we see in use at the British Open for example.
