My question is in regards to distance dispersion between different types of shafts. I have played DG most of my life but have tried

a variety of other shafts in recent years. It seems like every time I try a lighter shaft I start to lose some control over

distance. So I am looking at going back to some S400 DG, but wondering if the AMT shafts would be as consistent with distance

as DG. Would the standard weight Project X versus lighter weight PXi be as consistent? I play a lot of tournaments and distance control

is far more important than just distance.

Thanks for having this discussion.

I've got a few questions:

1. Why has the LZ shaft taken off on tour? What benefit is it giving the pros that they don't already have? And do you see the pros sticking with it long term?

2. On the flip side, what will the LZ shaft give amateurs that they don't already have? Which players do you see benefiting most from it?

3. It seems that graphite and steel can offer the same benefits these days. Do you think that's the case? Is there a reason to use one over the other? Do you see graphite ever overtaking steel shafts on tour or in the standard population?

Thanks!!

2 part question.

Any pro's gaming the LZ in their wedges?

How would the LZ compare to S400 in wedges?

DYNAMIC GOLD AMT IRON SHAFTS

Dynamic Gold AMT Tour Issue irons shafts have the same performance DNA as Dynamic Gold and are designed to get progressively heavier as golfers move from their long iron to short iron. Lighter long irons produce increased speed and higher initial launch, which makes them easier to swing and deliver a softer landing. The Tour-weighted short irons produce traditional Dynamic Gold accuracy, consistency and trajectory. AMT stands for Ascending Mass Technology, which means the steel shaft's weight increases in 3 gram increments from the 3-iron to PW, while the balance point is adjusted so that the swing weight is consistent to standard Dynamic Gold throughout the set. Dynamic Gold AMT Tour Issue is now available through True Temper Performance Fitting Centers.

PROJECT X LZ IRON SHAFTS

Project X LZ steel features proprietary Loading Zone Technology for improved energy transfer and a smooth feel. The reinforced tip and butt sections act to maintain the tour proven stability you expect from Project X with a mid-trajectory launch profile.LZ technology is achieved by using variable wall technology in both butt and tip sections and a reduced stiffness midsection. Golfers can not only feel Loading Zone technology, but see it as well in the rapid, tapered steps out of the grip through the mid-section of the shaft.

If a player seems to be between an S300 and an X100 do you recommend soft-stepping the X100 or hard-stepping the S300? Also, would this answer differ depending on the particular shafts being considered?

I absolutely love the feel of Nippon pro 950gh shafts in my covert forged irons. I can live with the high launch, however i despise the laughable spinning balloon shots that have lost me a club and a half of distance. So my question would be, which of these shafts have a smoother feel and lower spin?

Thanks Mark

Thanks, Mark.

Both AMT and LZ steel have variable wall technology (VWT) for added stability, feel and generally lower spin than lightweight, game improvement shafts. Feel and spin are very subjective and often specific to each golfer, but I think you would enjoy the feel of either shaft compared to what you are playing now.

I'm curious about the shelf life of graphite shafts and the effects of age both in use and sitting in a warehouse.

You really have no issues with this. The temperature required to damage a graphite shaft would exceed any normal situation you would encounter.

TTS

I have been trying to get away from the "rebar" that is C-TaperX130, but can't find a similar ball flight. Will a 6.5 LZ be somewhat comparable for ball flight?

I play the driver shaft, do you get that same "loading" feeling with the iron shafts?

Thanks in advance if you can answer either question.

If you play the driver shaft then you are familiar with the feel of the loading zone and the irons definitely have that same sensation. Like other Project X shafts, the LZ will have a lower trajectory apex than most shafts with a slightly higher initial launch.

What type of reserach goes into starting a new line based on classics such as the AMT off DG shafts and the PX LZ coming out of the Project X line? What would the designers say is their favorite part of coming out with a line like the PX LZ That push the limits of how a shaft is thought of?

We start by identifying a need in the shaft market place. As the heads, golf ball and golf strategy changes we have to design new shafts to fit players. Also when we develop new technologies we figure out how to incorporate those technologies into the shafts.

The best part of bringing a new shaft out to tour is seeing positive results with players.

How do the launch and spin characteristics of the PX LZ compare to PX flighted or DG Pro? Something directly in between those two would be my iron shaft unicorn. Thanks

Both Project X Flighted and DG Pro are variable ball flight shafts. Project X LZ steel has a constant tip stiffness through the shaft which would provide a consistent trajectory and spin through the set and just may be your shaft unicorn!

Hi True Temper! Thanks for taking the time to answer questions today. I am a HUGE TT/PX fan and can not get over the performance of my PX Handcrafted LZ60 driver shaft! This LZ technology has gotten me really excited (not to mention all of the success on tour) about the new LZ iron shafts! My question is would using the new PX LZ irons shafts have a significant impact on launch or ball flight? I already hit irons fairly high and don't really need help with launch... so what could I expect to see from these shafts Launch/Spin wise?

Thanks!!!

I have trouble hitting my 3&4 irons would it be a good idea to put a different flex or shaft in those ? Or keep constant throughout entire set ?

It depends on what issues you are seeing with those irons. Getting fit is always a great idea but if getting elevation with your 3 and 4 irons is your problem a flighted or progressive set like DG Pro can help. You could also look at putting a different shaft in those irons and keeping the rest consistent.

DB

For me I need a lovely feel in my irons. Smooth that is. Dg is that but they are heavier than I like. Px has a good light shaft but feel is eh compared to Nippon. Can the Lz be the shaft for me? I thought I read it was lighter than the dg and has better feel. Before you say try the xp, I can say I have and the flight was not what I was looking for.

Project X LZ definitely has a different feel from the original Project X due to the softness in the mid section. With weights from 110-125 it would be lighter than Dynamic Gold.

I play standard Dynamic Gold X100 in my irons and I'm generally happy with my ball flight. If I were to switch to AMT's for a little more distance in my long irons, might I also have to bend them a degree strong or something to offset the higher ball flight?

Our robot testing showed a 2* launch increase in the 4 iron compared to DG with really no increase in spin rate. With that being said a little higher ball flight shouldn't be a concern and distance will be greater without the need to offset with loft.

Will the LZ launch similar to the project X, with better feel? Or will similar flexes launch differently?

Overall Project X LZ is going to have similar launch characteristics to original Project X. Slightly higher initial launch and a flatter apex. Feel is very unique and different than original Project X.

There is a lot of competition on the market with a lot of different variations that can benefit a player if properly fit and also cause a headache if improperly fit. It seems like a local fitters can make the mistake of just suggesting the stock shaft that is currently in the irons.

So I have a couple of questions:

1) In simplified terms, what type of player would benefit from DG AMT shafts and why? What type of player would benefit from the Project X LZ iron shafts and why?

2) This one might be difficult to answer so no worries if you want to just stick with number 1. A lot of other companies are making shafts, so how do you make your product stand out with all the other vendors and what aspect of the TT shaft can you offer someone that other companies don't?

Thanks for taking the time to answer questions and getting the community involved to learn more about shafts.

Thanks for your questions!

Dynamic Gold AMT is for the Dynamic Gold player that is looking for ease in hitting long irons without giving up the hallmark feel of Dynamic Gold. Even tour players are looking for higher launching, softer landing long irons.

Project X LZ would be for moderate tempo players that want the tip and butt stability of Project X but may not be able to load Project X enough to transfer max energy.

Im interested in the project x lz iron shafts im looking to get the ball in the air easier these are said to be mid launch which would be good. Typically with mid to high launch u get higher spin rates and i want to stay away from that what are the spin chacteristics?

We've seen minimal increase in spin compared to original PX but launch conditions are fairly similar.

Sorry! missed part two of your question the first time around.....

True Temper is one of 2 steel manufacturers that can vary the wall thickness of the shaft, and we believe our designs incorporate this technology more so than our competitor’s shafts. It is not just limited to adding material to the tip for feel, durability and balance point. In Project X LZ, for example, the loading zone would not be achievable without putting more material at the tip and butt and reducing material in the mid section.

I know the LZ won the tournament.

You proved thath those are good for pros who have faster ss and higher spin rate.

But how do we know that these are good for normal amateur golfers?

Considering the stiffness profile of Project X LZ, it is the perfect shaft for a lot of us mortal golfers with average load profiles. Who wouldn’t benefit from stability at the tip and butt and assistance in delivering more energy to the ball because we’ve loaded the shaft more?

I feel like there has been a large advancement in steel iron shaft technology in the past 10 years. What has spurned this? Demand from touring pros? The average golfer? Technology advancements in manufacturing? Jacked up iron lofts?

Just curious as to why there are so many options now. (I am glad there are a lot of options, just to be clear)

From our stand point we are constantly investigating new technologies and EI profiles to match the needs of golfers at all levels. The introduction of launch monitors have definitely lead to an increase in the analysis of ball flight characteristics which has lead to a need for a wider range of shafts.

Here is a quote from an article in yesterday's Toy Box extra, "If an iron shaft’s flex is not stiff enough, a golfer needs to time the release of the head just right and use the hands excessively, which also leads to inconsistency." I was wondering if you agreed with the statement for purposes of fitting the new Project X LZ and Amt shafts? If I find myself getting to handsy, should I try the stiffer flex model?

Do you find that the AMT plays true to the stated flex throughout the set? Curious how that works.

Dynamically AMT plays true to its stated flex. Statically a lighter weight shaft will usually measure softer but shouldn't require someone to change to a stronger flex.

How would the new px lz compare with the dg pro profile?

I am a big fan of the dg pro used to play project x for a long time but became too harsh on my joints.

DG Pro is a variable ball flight shaft. Project X LZ steel has a constant tip stiffness through the shaft which would provide a consistent trajectory and spin through the set. With a softer mid section, it has a different feel than original Project X. Sensicore inserts can always be added to steel shafts to reduce vibration by 75%!

I have been playing a set of DGTI AMT since I could get my hands on a set. They are absolutely my favorite iron shaft ever, for me the lighter weight in the long irons are great and given I have my irons moi matched, I couldn't be happier.

Following the original thread on this site, I believe you had designed a wedge shaft to follow the progression of the weight. Can you comment on why this got scraped?

Additionally, any chance you'll release a Project X AMT?

Either way keep pushing the envelope in design, I'm really loving the new parts.

Thank you

So glad to hear you have loved your Dynamic Gold AMT shafts and thanks for the nice feedback.

Dynamic Gold is the most popular wedge shaft in golf, so we felt that it would be logical to start there and work our way back taking 3g of weight out per iron. Testing on tour and with OEM partners confirmed that decision.

As for releasing a Project X AMT, you never know!

What exactly is LZ technology? Does it fit better for a smooth tempo or fast tempo? By the way loving my HZRDUS Yellow shaft its the bomb.

LZ stands for loading zone. By reducing stiffness in the mid section of the shaft, most smooth to average tempo players are able to load the shaft more, thus transferring more energy to the ball than with original Project X. Typically a strong, fast tempo player will be able to achieve this with original Project X.

How much difference do you see in shaft performance when testing on a robot vs in the field? Does the way the shaft "loads" or "feels" to a player affect the way it performs more so than the actual shaft characteristics?

We can definitely see different results from robot to player and player to player. There are a lot moving parts in the golf swing so we use the robot to evaluate in an apples to apples comparison but player testing is always important. In general with tour players we will see similar results to the robot since most tour players swings are built on the same fundamentals of a tour swing. With amateur's swings we can see different results.

With some players feel can affect how they swing which in turn will affect the results. Some players aren't affected by different loading feels.

DB

Will there be any different finish options on the project x lz?

It has a great cosmetic already!

First bravo for bring some new tech to steel shafts

1. Does the change in weight cause any swing issues on the AMT if you have a hard transition

2. Does the loading zone behave in similar manner to the graphite shaft

3. Will there be a shaft that combines these 2 technology

bonus

Can you talk a little bit about the T1100 Hzrdus

Thanks for the kudos!

To your question about AMT, that really depends on a golfers ability to manage a lighter weight shaft. It’s a stiff tip throughout the set so stability is still there.

Yes, the loading zone in Project X LZ steel is the same technology and works the same way as the LZ in our graphite model.

Interesting concept about combining the AMT and LZ technology!

T1100 HZRDUS is prototype only for now. We are in the initial design and feedback phase, so it is too early to quote specs.

Playing AMT non TI right now...is there still a chance of a wedge shaft coming out?

Dynamic Gold is the most popular wedge shaft in golf, so we felt that it would be logical to start there and work our way back taking 3g of weight out per iron. Testing on tour and with OEM partners confirmed that decision.

Where do the DG Pro, LZ, and AMT sit in terms of player profiles?

The LZ steel player profile is someone who has a more moderate tempo and is looking for something to help load the shaft. DG PRO and AMT are derivatives of Dynamic Gold and that player profile, offering variable ball flight or weight differences.
