There will be only three Latin American players: Ángel Cabrera, Emiliano Grillo, Carlos Ortiz.

Fabián Gómez won the Hawaii Open in January and is 30th in the FedEx Cup, but apparently that doesn't count.

Other notable players missing:

  • Joost Luiten - 9th in the European Order of Merit, 2nd in the Spanish Open and Shenzhen International.
  • Rikard Karlberg - 10th in the European Order of Merit, 2nd in the BMW PGA Championship.
  • Soomin Lee - 13th in the European Order of Merit, winner of the Shenzhen International, 2nd in the Malaysia Championship.
  • Scott Hend - 15th in the European Order of Merit, winner of the Thailand Classic
  • Jeunghun Wang - 18th in the European Order of Merit, winner of the Trophée Hassan II and Mauritius Open.
  • Marcus Fraser - 23rd in the European Order of Merit, winner of the Malaysia Championship
  • Thomas Pieters - 26th in the European Order of Merit, 2nd in the Abu Dhabi Championship.
  • Thorbjorn Olesen - 28th in the European Order of Merit, 2nd in the Qatar Masters.
  • Victor Dubuisson - 38th in the European Order of Merit, winner of the 2015 Turkish Open.
  • Francesco Molinari, 4th in the 2015 Dubai Tour Championship, 7th in the Players Championship.
  • Matt Jones - winner of the Australian Open

Anyone else notice that when the "Japanese news reporters" ask a question at the news conference, they ALWAYS have a second question regarding Hideki Matsuyama regardless of who they are talking to. They asked Spieth yesterday and Rory just now.

They do it every major. They ask each player about Hideki and what they think of him. It's ridiculous.

Rofl

I'd love to see a clip of that. Hideki's a rock star ; )

Well played! Didn't even notice it was a DVD.

I was gonna bootleg but got a stomach ache from all the candy.

For some reason it cracks me up that they all as about Hideki. What do the golfer say when they ask?

Spieth's A-game is tailor made for this course. Reed's "honey badger" style may work if he's "on", kind of like Cabrera in 2007.

I don't see a bomber winning this one.

I can see Day winning, but only if he keeps the driver in the bag and uses his length wisely to find fairways with long irons and FWs. I agree that it wint be won by bombing it off the tee, but long hitters still have an advantage if they use their head.

Yea I don't like it. If I was Rors or Spieth I would get pissed.

Who else loves the Spieth pressed today ? He sure cut that reporter off at the knees wit his " you are putting words in my mouth sir ". lol. And then comments on the " professionals " seeking autographs while squashing a kid. " we don't like to sigh for them anyway " . I find him to be more and more like Phil Anne it comes to press conferences. Polite but unapologetic.

Sounds pretty interesting! Coverage over here so far has been pretty scant with Euro 2016 taking over most sports news. You wouldn't happen to have a link to this would you?

With all due respect, who won the last round between the English hooligans and the Russian gangs?

I just do not understand how football/soccer can be so important in Europe and South America it is an excuse for gang violence, murders, and who knows what other kind of mayhem that 90000 cops can't handle. They ought to play that tournament on a pitch on the Isle of Man so there can be no fans watching the game on site, and just broadcast it. Or even better, put it on radio.

How does your post have relevance to what the other guy said? It's almost as if there aren't any problems with violence in the US for you to focus on.

Anyway back on topic, I think Spieth has to be in with a good chance given how good he is on slick greens, but he'll have to hit those fairways.

It can't be as good as Death Blow.

I didn't see them answer it today, but usually the players just say how he is a good ball striker, works really hard, and is a great player. Seriously though, they ask the same guys the same question about Matsuyama every major.

Head pick: Day (that 2 iron!) or Adam Scott (ball striking)

Heart pick: Figjam

Dark horse: Branden Grace

Grace likes to sneak his way into the top 10 and make a run late, and I like that. What I don't like is Joe Buck and FS1 covering the USO. I hate that guy in baseball coverage and football coverage...he always comes off like a ******.

Edit: Buck always seems like a pretentious know-it-all.

Just watched the segment on Golf Channel about the head pro at Oakmont, Bob Ford. What a great story. Pretty interesting that Mr. Ford qualified and made the cut of the US Open when Oakmont was the host club and how he "went from the course to club house" to stock shirts and hats.

For some reason it cracks me up that they all as about Hideki. What do the golfer say when they ask?

The Hideki question is the first one. Pretty funny, have to give him credit for trying to answer the question.

Thanks, man. This is the greatest video ever made.

I actually transcribed it. Spieths face is classic as the reporter asks him,

"Young player like yourself and Hideki Matsuyama, every year you can improve so much.

How much did you improve since last year since when you win the championship, and how much Hideki improve since the last year?

And also do you expect him to challenge you this year at the US Open?"

Spieth, wringing his hands, does a great job with this.

Great avatar, btw ; )

I swear every substantial tournament there's a dude there whose SOLE job the entire week is to gather opinions on Hideki. Part of me thinks he's secretly in line to become Japans Emperor after he retires ;)

Curious why Phil is a "correct course"?

Me too. If there is anyone as prone to wayward tee balls, it's Phil.

I don't see him doing well here at all, despite recent rounds in the 60s.

When most folks think about Phil they immediately think wayward drives, and a guy who isn't necessarily a good pick for the U.S. Open.

You wouldn't think a guy like Phil would have a record six 2nd place finishes and a total of 10 top tens in the U.S. Open.

They cut the camera when Jordan flipped out on the follow up questions,

"Do you know what Hideki had for lunch today?"

"How will you feel when you wake up tomorrow and also, how will Hideki feel?"

"If Hideki wins the championship, will you feel ashamed?"

Sir,

Coverage of Euro 2016 has focused on the rioting and troubles outside the stadiums than the Soccer/football being played inside them. That may be one reason why he isn't hearing that much about the US Open. Does that help to explain it? Yes it was off-topic, sorry it bothered you.
