Would it have been better if he WD halfway through the day like DL3 or Keopka? What's the difference?

... People treat this like it's not a job. If you we're called in the work on a weekend got OT and had to go home sick, hurt, etc but they offered to pay you for the whole day would you refuse? Donate it to charity? Etc? NO FFFFING WAY! It's a lot of money for one shot, agreed; but that has nothing to do with it. It's their job to play professional golf and make as much as they can because no one knows how long their careers will be. He is a great young talent but you never know in this game and I don't knock him for accepting a paycheck from an event he earned his spot in.

I guess the kid from Texas should rot in H*** as well? Hossler would hit a good tee shot and then grasp his shoulder in pain. Bailed on his team in the final match. Of course we then found out he had a torn labrum and needed surgery. But based on the quality of his shots her could have played I guess.

Is that the case here?

I'm guessing Berger just needs to switch hands once in awhile to prevent sore shoulder.

Just looked on gc and it said he hurt it last week practicing. Betting he was hoping to be able to go and decided not to risk it. Odd thing was he had to WD from the wgc match play after hitting his hand on a rock during a swing. #32 in the world I'm sure he would rather play.

Here's the thing for me. As a spectator I expect professional athletes to aspire to be great, that's why they're pros. If Berger knew after one shot he was wd, then he knew well before the round. He gamed the system. That's cashing a check, the antithesis of aspiring to greatness in my book. So it was Unprofessional.

I don't think it bodes well for him competitively as he lets a nick prevent him from playing.

I'm not sure about that. People watch pro athletes and celebrities and seem to place them on a higher plain. These are not the brightest individuals yet they possess a rare talent. I respect them for their talent, not their ideals.

Berger took advantage of what was offered him. Not surprising in the least.

I don't blame Berger for what he did. I blame the PGA Tour for allowing it to happen. In my opinion, a player should have to complete all four rounds in order to cash a check.

Question (I honestly don't know the answer): If a player makes the cut at a regular event and then hits just one shot on Saturday and calls it quits, does he still get last place money? Or does he get a WD?

He made the cut, which means he earned it, and gets the cash. I'm not sure on FedEx points and if the money is official. It should be.

Technically this is not a PGA Tour event right? I know they get FedEx cup points, but there was a separate PGA Tour event coinciding with the WGC.

I always laugh at people that say stuff like " I wouldn't have done what he did. Blah blah blah". Until you have been in that situation you have no idea what you are talking about. Money changes people, and to deny that is naive.

After reading through this thread, I will admit I have no business sitting in judgement of a professional golfer and his business decisions simply because I don't know enough about their financial or health situations. Two things come to mind though. How much have they donated to charity in their careers compared to me & how many times have they incurred expenses to travel to and play 2 rounds only to walk away without a paycheck when I know I get paid every time I go to work. Also, they do have at least one person on payroll and sometimes more than one.

So you guys judge him til the cows come home.

I'll pass.

I don't really get why people here are so mad at him but yet have so little info.

What if he hurt himself the week before but it wasn't that bad and he thought he could recover. He then traveled to the next tourney thinking he could play. Travel which he has to pay for. Likely flew on a private jet and spent few thousand dollars. Then factor in lodging. After being there early in the week he realizes it's not going to get better and he can't play. So hit 1 shot, collect the money, pay off the expenses you incurred and pocket say $20k after taxes. He's there already so he might as well. Now if he hopped on a plane Wednesday evening and flew to the course just to hit a shot and fly home than its a bit different. I wouldn't fault him for doing it but at the same point it would just prove he's a little cheap and greedy.

I have a feeling he was already there and realized he couldn't play so just said screw it I might as well get the cash.

Has he said why he did it? Even if he said why he did it we still don't know for sure.

In the same position I cannot for sure say what I might do. Hopefully he did it to get his caddy some $$ for the effort/being away from family.

I think the sponsor pays out the purse no matter what so if he doesn't get the $$ then it gets spread through the field yes?

Is all of this true?

He knew that if he hit just one shot, he'd collect the $50K?

Well, if it is true, then Berger is a s++mbag in my book.

Can anyone imagine Byron Nelson or Arnold Palmer sitting in their hotel room on Wednesday night and thinking, "Hey, man, my shoulder's killing me but they tell me if I can manage to hit just one shot tomorrow, I get to collect $50,000. I'm in!"

It's about integrity.

"Or you got it or you don't got it."

Do you pay your employer back when they give you a paid holiday or vacation? Integrity.. smh
