Footwork

Recommended Posts

I have been watching video of Lydia Ko's golf swing, paying attention to her footwork. She has what I'll call "quiet feet" during her golf swing. She is the antithesis of Bubba Watson's footwork. I concentrated on having quiet feet on the range today and liked my results. I took it to the golf course and hit 12 of 14 fairways and 13 greens. I'm very excited with my results. Next, I came home to watch some video of Ben Hogan, my hero, and although his footwork is more aggressive than Lydia's, he also keeps that front foot planted throughout his golf swing. No Bubba tippy toes at impact. Point being, don't neglect your footwork/balance throughout the golf swing.

When I watch the old timers swing back in their hay day it seems to me that their feet were way more active than todays players. All the way up to Nicklaus's era, including the shark, their rear foot slid forward toward the target in the follow through. You don't see that in most players these days.I am not quite sure why that is.It seems to me that the swing has evolved over the years.Would be curious to hear other opinions on this.

I think the hickory shaft era was most associated with "active" feet really. indicative of the equipment they used.

Why did it eventually go away in the steel shaft era? boy it didn't for a long time, watch Sam Snead "release" and replant that left foot!

the golf swing/teaching runs thru periods of copycat... IMO it was (if my memory serves me right) first guys like Couples and Els that got teachers/Golf Digest type mags going wild over utilizing big, big turn with flat to the ground footwork. and for the most part that is what you're left with all these years later

and FWIW yes, I personally always monitor footwork when working on things, and prefer considering it very "heavy" feet.

Jack said he rolled his ankles, as Bubba does today. Deep hip turn begins with the feet/ankles.

Left ankle everts in BS. Cant evert left ankle if left shoulder goes down in BS therefore no deep hip turn.

Right ankle eversion in DS.

Inversion of left ankle in follow through.

If ankles dont absorb the twisting, tilting, change in COG, then the spine will.

Feet more flat on the ground, leads to back problems. eg Kenny Perry

Any wonder why students of the modern teachers eg Sean Foly, Como

have back problems?
