Scottsdale Golf Trip Early Dec.

Hey Guys:

8 of us are thinking of doing a guys golf trip for the week of Dec. 5th. We have been doing FL and Myrtle for the last 6 years in October but decided to go later this year due to schedule conflicts. I have a couple of questions. We ideally would like to stay in 2 bedroom suites/condos or all have our own room. We are at the stage where nobody wants to share a room (we know it increases cost). I'm not too familiar with the places to stay in Scottsdale that would offer the best in terms of this. From searching online, it appears that Gainey Suites Hotel is rated very highly. Would you all agree? We tried Westin Kierland Villas but they don't have 4 two-bedroom villas available that week. Looking forward to your suggestions (nobody wants to rent a house either unfortunately).

The other question I had is in terms of weather. Will it still be warm in early Dec. to play 36/day? What are typical temps like? Sunset? Wekopa is overseeding 3 weeks prior and they said it will be cart paths only. Would you still play there or would you stay away because of this?

I go there a lot two years ago first week of December wore shorts every day have gone week before Xmas a couple of times mixed bag warm days and also frost delays.

WeKoPa is always cpo until January

I stay at Orange Tree a lot do not play course. The suites are 1br 700 sq feet with a jetted tub probably can be had for like 125-150 a night at that time period

Search in the Southwest Forum, tons of info. Many courses are CPO December, especially the better ones. Not really a big deal. Weather will be cool to cold in the morning, may have frost delays especially in the north Scottsdale courses, so 36 not always possible.

I spent a week in Scottsdale last year around New Years (might be warmer when you go) and if I recall correctly, getting 36 holes in a day is kind of tough between the frost delays and early sunsets.

36 holes is not a problem if you are among the first groups out and a have quick lunch even with a frost delay do it all the time

One of the other guys in the group was told to stay at Gainey Suites Hotel. Looks like it was just totally redone and looks pretty good. 2 bed suites and comes with free breakfast and happy hour which includes cocktails and food. Looking to play Raven Phx first round off plane, 36 Grayhawk, 36 Wekopa, 36 Troon, and 18 TPC Scottsdale. Any other suggestions?

With approximately 10 hours of sunlight that time of year, it will be hit or miss as to 36. Seeing as you are not traveling between courses there is no travel time needed. I would call each of the courses and try and get your tee times now. As for weather, I really wouldn't worry too much about temperature unless there are frost delays. It seems as if every year we get a winter storm sometime in December, but nothing you can do about that. As for spots to stay, you want no further south than Gainey. Keep looking north from there. The courses give you a lot of desert golf so be prepared for that. You can also check out Talking Stick.

Thx. I've been going to Scottsdale for the last 6 years or so but usually in Feb-April. We have stayed at The Sanctuary at Camelback and Fairmont Scottsdale Princess.... but never been out there for a guys golf trip. That is why I was asking if Gainey Suites was a nice place to stay. Seems after the improvements it looks pretty legit and offers the 2 bedroom suites. I think the package price for staying there and playing the courses I mentioned was around $2k/person. The tee time they gave us were 750am and 1:10pm.

The sunset in December will be around 5:15, so finishing will be close and will depend on frost delays, as others have said, and how busy the course is for your second round. Good luck and have fun.

If you end up staying at Gainey I'd look at the redesigned Camelback Ambiente. Really enjoyed my round there and it's maybe 10 minutes from Gainey. There's also a second course, Padre, at this Marriott facility so you could play 36 if the weather allowed. (I think most will agree that Ambiente is a much better course).
