Chrome Soft** A full club longer with irons?

HoganHO

Recommended Posts

I think the Chrome Soft** (2016) has earned a permanent spot in my bag--My lowest 3 scores in the past year have been with this ball, and I can see tangible differences for my game.

I tried to play the ProV1 for many, many months and I just play better with this ball.

Only thing is, I notice I'm almost a full club longer with my irons--not a bad thing, and I will adjust.

Just wondering if others have found this to be true. My tee/driver distance is equal to the ProV1.

(yes, I know there is a 26 page thread about the ball, just want to discuss this particular issue)

I feel like I have read everyone likes the chrome soft but I feel like most say it's shorter and not longer.

My driver swing speed is right around 108-110 at the moment and I feel like I picked up a small handful of yards with this ball. No quite so much on the driver, but I have been hitting a ton of deep irons since I put it in play. Like hitting a flyer almost, but right out of the fairway. No reason for it other than new ball.

Well, maybe I'll give it a go. I haven't been trying them because of the shorter comments I have read. Maybe I'm mistaken.

People come up with a lot of excuses for their short-knocking on this site. Most premium balls are going to be within a handful of yards of each other.

I play the Chrome Soft and occasionally the ProV1x. I don't notice any distance differences at all off the driver, possibly a few yards more on iron shots with the Chrome Soft. Definitely not a club longer though.

I recommend doing that. I've been a ProV1 player for the last year or so, a titleist tour ball player dating back to their balatas in the 1960's, but recently tried the Chrome Soft. For me it performs almost identically to the ProV1: distance, dispersion, and spin, with any club in my bag. I do think the Chrome flies a bit higher off the driver. Their behavior off the putter is pretty much the same too. If I didn't know from the color (the Chrome Soft is a whiter white), they're interchangeable.

So I'm making the switch, why not, it's $10/doz cheaper where I live.

The flyer analogy is exactly what I've been seeing--really jumps off my shorter irons and wedges.

Agreed competely.I found a chrome soft a few months back , and it was the first one I had played and it was amazing. My "complaint" was that it went further than my usual ball (Strata Tour Advanced). I hit a typical half swing lob wedge from about 40 yards and the ball jumped off the face like no other ball I've tried, then it stuck to the green like a Pro V. It's the best of both worlds.

I find most "Tour" type balls go about the same distance for me although occasionally I find a model (TM Lethal for example) that I'm pretty sure really does cost me five yards or so of lost distance for some reason. I play the Chrome Soft and have played the ProV1 in the past and they both seem to fall into the normal "about the same distance" category.

For my low trajectory, low clubhead speed game the ProV1 almost certainly checks up a little quicker than Chrome Soft on approach shots with a mid-iron but they both spin plenty with wedges.

Is it possible the "full club longer" is coming from the Chrome Soft simply spinning a bit less on iron shots than what you're used to? For some people a a few hundred rpm less spin off an iron will gain them some distance...

I thought it was from less spin too until I got on a monitor. I did noticed a couple hundred rpms less spin on my 50 degree but no can no way add 15% distance.

My guess is and it is a guess is the soft cover and center compress better than most balls on half shots allowing you to get the full rebound or superball effect. I also found the 2016 doesn't go quite as far as the 2015.

I have been searching for a new ball the last few weeks. Played the original Hex chrome for a long time. I have found the Chrome soft to be about the same off the driver and pretty close to a full club longer off the irons with better greenside spin. It has taken some time to adjust, but I really like the ball.

I also found the Project A to be the same distance as the chrome soft, but with less spin around the green.

I had kinda the opposite happen. I lost distance, but greenside spin was up to par.

I have been playing the CS since the 2015 model, I loved it and the only thing I would've improved would've been a bit firmer, then the 2016 version came out and it is exactly what I wanted, it performs great for my swing, like stated above I am in the 105-108 driver SS and 90s with the irons...love the ball

I have found that the new chrome soft performs very similar to the ProV1x for me in all categories.

I've tried the new version CS for a few rounds now and my experience with it is it goes about the same distance as the v1x with all clubs except the irons and wedges, which are at least half a club longer on every shot for me. My driver ss is right at 112 mph on a good swing.

It has taken some effort adjusting to it but I think it's a great ball. An upgrade from last year's version for sure. Significantly longer with the driver and the occasionally jump shots seems to be solved completely. It puts a really nice roll of the putter as well.

This can't be an accident. I, too, have noticed the ball really does to seem to jump on the irons. I picked up a box a few months back and just today played a full round with the Chrome Soft. By the third hole I had hit two 8 irons and a 7 iron. Each shot was 8 to 10 yards longer than my normal distance. On the back nine I hit a five iron into a par 3 that I normally have to hit a 3 iron or hybrid on and made birdie. I noticed no driver or 3 wood distance increases though, just the irons.
