1) Fantastic achievement!

2) Don't think a single great round will suddenly qualify him as a RC pick.

3) I always find Furyk's game extremely boring to watch, so much so that I will usually step away and grab a glass of water/take a leak when they are showing him. However, I believe it is EXACTLY that kind of game that is needed to do this. The best round of golf I ever witnessed was playing with a guy who shot an easy 68 on my then home course. The most boring round of golf ever. Fairways, greens, putts....

Could have been even lower.

He's such a genuinely nice guy too - could not happen to/for a nicer player on tour. That fist pump when he hit FW on 18 said it all. He knew he was on the verge and he definitely wanted it.

Congrats Jim! For all of us whose swings aren't perfect - but somehow work - congrats!!!!

JF's new nickname. Not a Nicklaus, or Woods, or Player or Hogan or Jones or Nelson...the lowest round in PGA Tour history is Jim Furyk...

Back then they didn't have the equipment (clubs, balls, etc.) they do today. Today they are hitting 8 irons into holes that were long irons or woods back then. Plus, the courses now-a-days are in perfect shape, unlike they were back in the day of Hogan, Nelson, Palmer and even as recent as Nicklaus. I strongly suspect the players of old could have done the same as current players given the same equipment and conditions.

Wasn't AL Geiberger's 59 on a course that stretched to 7,000+ yds?

Announcers are unwilling (thus far) to bring up that fact that the course is a par 70. Still fantastic, but not like 58 was shot on a par 72 course.

Is a 12 under 58 on a par 70 course as good as a 13 under 59 on a par 72 course...or as good as a 12 under 59 on a par 71 course?

Well he does have a 59 on a par 71...also...so he's got that going for him too...lol

How did I know I'd open this thread to hear some WRXers commenting about it being a par 70 or players of yesteryear and the differences in equipment? This place never disappoints. Bottom line is, the man shot the lowest round ever. Call his game boring. Call his swing ugly, but you can also call him Mr. 58. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. Congrats Jim!

Par 72 makes it easier to shoot lower number relative to par, harder to shoot lower absolute number. In other words, easier to shoot -13 on a par 72 (59) than on a par 70 (57), but easier to shoot 59 on a par 70 (-11) than on a par 72 (-13).

Yup, I'm not sure why so many don't understand this. It's far easier to make a par on a par 4 than it is a birdie on a par 5 for the pros. Even Tiger only averaged about a 4.5 on the par 5s when he lead the stat year after year.

Tiger shot a worst-ball 56 at Medalist

I believe the actual story was 65 but whatever. We can make this a Tiger thread.

Have 2 extra par 5's brings in 2 extra chances to make eagle. I wonder if it's easier to make eagle on a par 4 or par 5? Hmmmmm

He shot the first 58 in PGA Tour history. Stop trying to belittle the accomplishment.
