Golf Clubs stolen. AGAIN!

Call the last course you played, maybe you left them there and forgot...

This happens more than you think. Or, just the other day at a range that my buddy owns, a customer came in and said that there was a set of clubs in her car that didn't belong to her. Someone likely parked next to her and had the same kind or color of vehicle and put his clubs into the back and then drove away in the right vehicle. My buddy still has the clubs (waiting for the person to come back) but the guy is likely saying the same thing as the OP.

Sorry but how in the hell does that happen? Was the car not locked?

I think we all know exactly what our trunk looks like and whats in it, right down to that piece of garbage you just leave there till you get 'around to it'. so to rock up to two identical cars, open the wrong one, put your clubs in the wrong one then drive off in the right one just beggars belief. That doesnt even happen in a Mr Bean movie.

You need to work at a golf course for a full year if you don't believe this. The things I have seen will boggle your mind. This is 100% believable.

There's a guy who belong to my club who had the identical car to mine. Make/model/year/color. I would see his car around town at various courses/driving ranges all the time.

So one day I park at my local dome, go in, hit balls, come out, walk to "my" car. Open the back hatch, and there's a rake in the car... What the. I don't have a rake! I opened his car (mine was parked two spots farther down, with a big suburban between the two of ours) and I wasn't paying much attention, and honestly, unless you looked at the license plate, the two cars were identical.

I told him the next time I saw him, and said "LOCK YOUR CAR!!!"

PS, even if you live in a nice community, there are ALWAYS a-hole kids around looking to score a few bucks.

Best thing is to keep your good set locked up in the trunk and a crap set laying in the back seat. He sees the junk in plain sight he would have to pay someone to take and doesn't think there might be another set in the trunk.

Honestly though, I think the thieves case the players when they're not watching. Like hang out at the range to see who has nice sticks, then copy the license plate and plan the theft. for when the guy drops his guard. Special place in hell for people like that.

I worked at a club 35 years ago, and there were 2 members who had the exact same Cadillac Biarritz. One guy was known as the local town drunk, a good player who played every men's day, while the other fella only showed up occasionally, maybe to play cards once or twice a year on Men's Stag Day.

The second guy goes to leave one night, and can't get his car to start....realizes that he is trying to start someone else's car that looks like his, and discovers that his car is gone.

The police go out looking for his car, and find it about a mile or 2 from the club, parked in front of a little honky tonk bar. They go inside, and sure enough...there is the town drunk, sitting at the bar having another drink. They ask him why he took the other guy's car....obviously, he's in the dark as to what has happened, so he gives the police his keys, they walk outside, and sure enough....HIS keys unlock and start the OTHER GUY"S CAR!

The police can't believe it.....but, what can they do???

So....they drive the car back to the club, along with the drunk, where the first guy is waiting for his car, and get it back to him. The drunk has his car at the club, but smartly, lets the cops drive him home. He picks the car up the next morning.

True story, and something that I might not have believed had I not seen it with my own eyes.

Ill never understand what compels people to leave clubs in their cars

Far more troubling to me is what compels people to take that which is not theirs.

Everyone seems to be jumping on the OP but few are facing the fact that he was the victim of a crime. Instead of making him feel worse about the situation wouldn't it be better to just say sorry for your loss? I guess a good question is what compels members here to sort of kick other members when they are down? From bad BST deals to leaving clubs in the trunk there sure are a lot of judgmental replies and I really don't see the point of piling on.

I'll never understand how people don't always have clubs in their car. From April 1-November 15 my clubs don't leave my car unless being used at the course. Nothing worse then getting a call to skip out of work early to golf and having to decline because the course is in the opposite direction of your house and you have no clubs on you.

Yeah, and where I live it can take 45 min to go 10 miles if you're trying to do it at the wrong time of day. I also regularly head to the driving range at lunch time if my schedule allows, but I don't usually know when those days are going to come along. Although, it helps that I get to park in a garage with key card access.

It is sad that the clubs were stolen. But, if I recall the thread on the first time it happened to the OP, renter's insurance was recommended then. And possibly a separate sporting goods rider. As others have pointed out in this thread this also covers liability, and protection of all belongings in case of theft, fire etc.

I'd be pissed too if my clubs were stolen, even though I do pay for insurance and a separate golf club rider beyond the Sporting good blanket. If after having them stolen once one didn't get the wakeup call for insurance on ALL belongings (plus liability), and taking extra care to keep his clubs in sight or stored securely, I still have a measure of sadness for his situation, but not a ton of sympathy. Maybe he will hear the wakeup call now though.

I hope he has pictures of the clubs and a record of the serial numbers for his search. Even without receipts ( such as clubs from BST) those steps would provide a good measure of proof of ownership if he or the police find them, for insurance if one had a policy in place.

My clubs sit in my car every day of the year. I live in the south and can play pretty much every day. As much as it would suck to have my clubs stolen I'm not going to inconvenience myself by not leaving them in there and forgot my clubs at the house because I was in a rush. I'm all for locking my car and not having valuables in sight but there comes a point where enough is enough. If someone wants my stuff bad enough a lock isn't going to stop them. OP, I would look into how they knew you had clubs in your trunk, not like they are made of glass. Get renters insurance, I pay 50 cents a day to have it.

When I worked at a course you would not believe how many people leave their clubs on the rack and I didn't notice because I was in the cart barn. People don't really pay attention a lot of the times, most look at the headcovers and grab that bag. You wouldn't believe how many times people would carry their bag to their car put in the trunk and still drive up to the bag drop pop the trunk to put their bag in only to realize they already did it.

+1 get renters insurance. It was the best advice given the first time. http://www.golfwrx.c...l__flgolfjunkie

I'm so glad I park underground at work. Never need to worry about my clubs while I'm in the office. But otherwise, my clubs are in the garage and never in the car unless I'm driving to play. If you can afford to play golf, you can afford the 20-50 bucks a month for renter's insurance. There's something about your car making you an easy mark, or something you are doing to make yourself an easy mark.

My coworkers side eye me when I place my bag by my desk and work but literally everyone I golf with regularly has had their trunks popped and clubs stolen at least once.

And they are definitely targetted as no one else's cars will be broken into around them. Someone knows there's clubs there and makes a concerted effort to go steal them. Low lifes. And that's why I take mine into work and back into the apartment after work. I take it into the pro shop and don't leave them outside the shop, etc.

Sucks so much man. I am sorry.

you need to move ! where the hell do you guys live?

I live in an affluent neighborhood of San Antonio, but sh*t still happens and thieves are everywhere my man.

I can play daily 365 days here in SA and I literally just haul them into work every single day. Place them behind the desk and work. A couple dudes at work have started doing the same after some have had theirs taken from the work parking lot. And we have a security patrol. Someone else mentioned that golfers get cased and I am 100% convinced that is what happens. SAPD has told people I know that golf clubs are top 3 most targeted stolen item. Luckily they have a lot of pawn shops who are honest and will call when a set of clubs comes in that matches a BOLO SAPD sends through email bulletins.

Take pics of your sticks and bag and maybe your local PD does that same.

If you can afford to play golf and practice you can afford to buy Renters Insurance. Be responsible and cover your belongings. Sorry to hear you got targeted twice!

They'll pay minus the deductible, so your clubs have to be worth more than that..... What am I saying, this is GolfWrx, of course our clubs are worth more than the deductible! :)

There are people who accidentally leave infants in their car, so its not unbelievable to me. There are some really absent minded folks in this world

Yep, thieves from lower income areas target affluent areas for a reason, they have better stuff! We have the same issue around here, thieves will drive into our city from neighboring towns and steal crap out of cars

So I obviously know I dropped the ball with not carrying Renters insurance. It still doesn't erase the fact that someone was a criminal and STOLE something that wasn't theirs. You guys see it as a simple solution because, most of you haven't dealt with this. For me, it's a bigger issue. I'm now looking for another place to live as I can't believe this has happened twice!!

Yes, it's most likely a teenager(s) looking for a quick buck. This time I have pictures of every club and serial number. We will keep looking and see what happens!! Thanks for your guys' opinion, this is what makes this country so great!!

I'm sorry if you felt dumped on, especially from me, 'cause I can only be responsible for myself. But I think folks were taking the time trying to give you best advice both times. I guess you have got it now that generally the best advice consensus is to have tenant's insurance, not just for golf clubs and other possessions but for general liability that could wipe you out.

Sorry, no, it wasn't obvious to me that you "knew you dropped the ball on renter's insurance "as you simply just said three days ago "nah, I don't get renter's insurance" and almost exactly 3 years ago you said you hadn't gotten around to it yet when folks suggested the same thing.

Look, I get it, and I'm sure all of us get that this is incredibly stressful, that you were the victim of a crime and feel violated. Also that understandably now you feel also need to move, that puts on additional stress and expenses besides any golf club replacement stress and costs.

Good you had pics and serial numbers this time. But unless you just wanted to rant (which wasn't clear at least to me from your initial post) presumably you were asking other members for advice.

I did later quickly read the other thread after a poster supplied the link- surprised I remembered it when I found it was three years ago- and read some comments that getting tenant's insurance in Florida can be difficult. I was surprised of the low rates quoted to you. In Canada where I live rates are probably higher (like for a lot of things, like cell phone plans ) just because of our smaller population base and geography. I've always paid more than some of the numbers quoted to you when I was renting, even when I had a modest salary many years ago and I'm in my 60's now. But, I always considered insurance important whether required or not by a landlord when I was renting.

My philosophy was (besides the liability issues) for posessions was, if I couldn't afford to write a cheque to replace/upgrade the full amount without hurting, I needed insurance. I got the insurance.

Good luck to you, and I hope it turns out well.
