2017 Tucson area course conditions thread

Permanently just moved to Tucson and figured this would be a good thread to start as I know there are a couple others who live down here.

 

Haven't played down here since I moved but if anyone has recently played any tracks, post some thoughts!

Just got done playing Randolph North yesterday and it's in great shape from the overseed. It's cart path only right now, but if you're a walker then that's no problem. Greens are running true. Overall just in solid shape.

Del is getting ready for overseeding, so they are letting the grass die down. Probably not worth the price of admission as of now.

Played Enke a few weeks back, good overall shape but I think it's closed now for overseeding. They only do the tee boxes and greens, which may turn some people off but it actually works well for the course.

Playing Ventana (canyon) in a few weeks, right after the overseed so it should be in good shape.

 

What days are you normally available to play?

Sweet I love both of those tracks! Fridays and Saturdays are the best days because I work all day Mon-Thurs then I reserve Sunday for my NFL fix haha.

Enke just opened back up. Not sure what the conditions are like as I was just at the range/ practice area for a bit today. Looking forward to playing it soon though.

 

Played Dell Urich a few days ago. I actually like pre- overseed conditions but it definitely was not worth the price as pace of play was over 4 1/2 hours on a weekday in the afternoon. At one point I looked ahead of our group and there were at least three twosomes all back to back. According to the starter he had a couple of groups refuse to join up with each other. Should have played North but oh well.

Tucson has without a doubt, the best city courses. They are always in better than average conditions and you can't beat the prices. Perfect for the winter time.

God no. Our city is run by some of the most incompetent morons known to man, with our TUSD Superintendent raking in more $ than the President of the US. 3-5 years (maybe sooner) and the soon to be wife and I will be out of here. Can't come soon enough.

Played Quarry Pines today, and it was in great condition. Fairways were perfect, not too soggy considering they just re- opened. Greens are looking good, albeit a little slow. One or two holes on the front still had a bunch of sand that slowed them down even more but other than that they were great. I'd probably recommend avoiding it on the weekends until it's no longer cart path only but there are plenty of good rates on golfnow/ teeoff during the week.

Played Randolph today, it was super enjoyable. The contrast between the dormant rough and the lush green fairways was awesome. Greens and fairways were in really solid shape!

 

Pretty awesome pace too. Teed off at about 1130, I walked and was paired with a guy who was riding and we finished in under 3 hours and 30 minutes. Didn't have to wait one hole.

Nice! I drive by there all the time and North definitely looks in better shape than Del. I have heard that El Rio is in unbelievable condition right now! Same thing with Enke.

Interesting comments on the city....we live in Colorado Springs currently, but have been looking at the Oro Valley area a bit.

Played Silverbell the other day. Teed off at 1:20, finished right as it got dark at 5:40. Packed tee sheet, but we were on a pretty good pace up until things got jammed at the 16th. That's really my only complaint about the course is the long par 3's, especially since two of them both have water, really slows things up on a busy day. The bridge by the 18th tee was shut down too so people had to drive around 11, and circle back. Made things even slower.

 

Other than that course was in good condition, not much roll out on the fairways because of the rain though. Not a big problem for me, since I only hit 3 of them haha

 

It was also significantly cheaper than the rest of the city courses.

I went and played Del Lago the other day ($35 can't beat it) and it was in really good shape. A 45 min frost delay but we weren't waiting around on the tee boxes or anything. They did a good job with the pace. I really like that course for some reason, but I developed a nice case of the pushes that day. Shot an absolute dismal +12.

Del Lago is a fun course, haven't played there since overseed. I'll have to play there soon. Rates look pretty good at the moment, and it's pretty close to where I live.

Buddy of mine played there about a month ago and said it was in perfect shape. Doesn't surprise me at all. The resorts always seem to take care of their places well.

Nice! I can't believe how cheap that place is during the prime time. Really need to get out there. Gonna be living at a place that overlooks one of the holes, can't beat those views!

Love Starr Pass. Had a house and was a member there years ago when it was 18 holes and still played the Tucson Open there. The couse was always in great condition and the greens rolled great and were fast.

How are conditions in Green Valley? I'm not a fan of target golf, but I do like being in the desert. Are there any courses I may want to avoid? I usually choose tees that result in a course length of 6000 to 6300 yards if that's of any help. Thanks.

Heading to Tucson for a few rounds in a couple of weeks. Just curious as to what resort or muni courses are in the best shape right now. Not really any specific budget, just looking for good value. Also, are there any good tracks that are more open and forgiving? Looking for a good course for the first day to allow us to knock the rust off.

 

Currently looking at Sewailo, Ventana canyon, Dove Mountain, and Arizona National. Maybe Enke or another muni for the first day?

just got back from Tucson yesterday. Played Dove and Star Pass...both in beautiful shape. Not sure why they don't overseed in Texas anymore...sure miss it.
