2017 Tucson area course conditions thread

Played San Pedro in Benson this past weekend. Course was very wet in areas, but dried out well over the weekend(match play event). Greens were very good, receptive, rolling true and by Sunday were pretty dang quick.

Played the course 4 times in 3 days, honestly it is one of the funnest layouts I have played in a while. Just a blast. The course fits in really well with the terrain, designer did a great job using that terrain to create some very unique holes. If I'm in the area again I would absolutely look forward to playing it again.

I’ve been wanting to head out and play San Pedro again. It’s been ages! Glad to hear that it’s in good shape. I just get discouraged because of the drive lol.

Played Del Lago with Shipwreck yesterday.

Course looked pretty nice, but the greens were just verdict and fuzzy. Hard to find the pace.

I played like poo as well.

I'd like to see it again with the greens better.

Was planning on playing there soon, guess I'll wait a little longer til the greens are in better shape.

Golfweek Ryder Cup? Was hoping to play but had to bail unfortunately. How'd you do?

It was, absolute blast. El Paso/N.M. ended up winning the cup. I went 1-1-1. Their tour director looked at match-ups and actually used a bit of strategy. Our director just threw everyone out there and never adjusted. I don't think the Az guys were taking it very seriously, at least compared to EP/NM.

It was very fun though, can't say enough about the staff at San Pedro, good people. Besides the course being a blast the food in the restaurant is amazing, not much to Benson but it was the consensus that it's the best food in town(locals consensus).

I plan on driving down for a few of the upcoming Tucson events, looks like a good start to the initial GWAT season.

I'm glad to hear the good word on San Pedro. I used to play there a lot, but I've moved to the other side of Tucson, and haven't been in a while. I heard they were making the fairway bunkers bunkers again, is that true? I hope so! It was one of my favorites, I need to get back out there!

I spend a lot of time in the Valley so I'll be playing events in both cities as well. Definitely some solid courses on both of the schedules. All of the people I played with at the phoenix events were great, hoping it's the same down here.

AZ National was in great shape today.

Too bad slow play killed the back nine.

Front 1:20, back 2:40. Ugh!

Play Silverbell today. It’s in amazing shape, the greens are rolling unbelievably. Played in 2:45.

Agree, played it today. Back nine greens were especially nice and smooth. Quick, too. Front nine had a few bumpy spots. Played the back first in 1:15. Then i got slowed up on the front and score suffered. 39 back/ 43 front while waiting on every shot.

I gotta learn how to keep my rhythm when this happens, always trips me up....

Ventana Mtn. today and it was outstanding...greens were very quick. Enjoyed it very much.

I used to work at Ventana (Canyon course) and I’ve never played either course in bad shape! Love those courses.

Playing Crooked Tree today. First time out there. Will post condition report

First time around this course. Interesting track, but nothing stands out except some nice desert scenery.

Course was in pretty good shape but greens were really slow, like velcro slow. I guess they are only a few weeks out of overseed.

Pace of play was a little slow for how straight forward the course is.

I'd like to play it again with faster greens. Nice practice facility and range.

I'd give it a 6/10.......

We played it a few weeks ago, and the greens were like you said.

There is a back nine par 3 over water, the pin placement was just stupid. On about a 5% slope a few feet from the front edge. I hit the chip shot of my life to 4 feet beside the hole, then 3 putted from there. Argh.

Played Silverbell yesterday with my Men’s Club. Course was in absolutely beautiful shape. Very strong winds made the day slow but I somehow managed a 71 with some clutch putting. Greens were smooth and quick. Bunkers were....well they were Tucson city bunkers.

Yeah. I was there last night for my friends bday and it’s hella fun! If you go when they open 9am-noon it’s only $25/hr vs the $45 later in the evening.

Hey everyone, very helpful thread here! I have a trip planned to Tucson the end of February and wanted to get opinions on courses we should play. I will be staying with a buddy of mine who lives in Tucson, so he does have some local knowledge, but wanted to hear from others here.

We are already playing Dove Mountain for sure, and we've also discussed Sewailo, and El Conquistador. I visited the same friend a few years ago and we only played 1 round, which was at Quarry Pines.

I'm not exactly sure which area of Tucson he lives, but I know he's close to the new Top Golf that recently opened if that helps anyone with their suggestions.

Thanks in advance for any replies, all suggestions are much appreciated!

Most all courses are gonna be in prime condition in Feb. and you can go wrong with any that you listed, although I might forego El Con, not my favorite track in town. Starr Pass will give you a run for your money, Sewailo is always a treat (it’s the U of A home course) and AZ National is an absolutely great course. If you’re looking to save a few bucks, the Randolph City courses and Fred Enke are always a viable option too.

Thanks for the input Shipwreck! I spoke with my buddy in Tucson earlier today and found out he lives minutes away from Silverbell so we'll probably hit that up once just for the convenience factor. I also brought up the 49'er to him and he said that course and AZ National are on the opposite side of town from him so not certain if we'll get out that way since there's more than enough courses around his area. I think we may also head south one day and play Del Lago. I read through the thread here and saw some positive comments except for shaggy greens but since you said Feb will be prime conditions I have no worries.

Thanks again for the reply!

Silverbell is a decent course. As of late though it’s been in really good shape with very quick greens. Del Lago is a good course. Can be tough esp later in the day when the wind picks up. Either way you won’t be disappointed that time of the year. I’d try and get out to Sewailo or Starr Pass if you could. I’d honestly bypass Dove Mountain (very high cost) and instead play a couple others.

AZ National is in great shape except for the green side bunkers.

Greens were fast and true, fairways are rolling out.

I really wish they’d fix their bunkers, such a fun track otherwise.
