I have no opinion on Brandel either way, however Nicklaus had the chipping yips and came back from them to win again. If indeed Woods has them at all.

Jack fell into a bad short game and loss of confidence which he revamped with Rodgers, but yips is an overstatement, at least have never seen that from Jack or Phil, so if they have said that would appreciate the source.

Jack had bad technique and lack of practice, he admitted so......didn't really need to as he didn't miss many greens, and he wasn't THAT bad. The US Open playoff with Trevino at Merion was not good for him, he chunked a few.....but other than that he was just kind of average to below average around the greens. That being said after he dedicated a season to working on it with Rogers he became pretty solid. Later in his career he was actually pretty good, I remember a SWWOG match with I thing Crenshaw where he holed like 3 short game shots.

Jack was always one of those people who when they put their mind to something he usually pulled it off.

Edit: one other thing....Jack was such a good putter that if the chip wasn't that good he still made a lot of them, and he was great with the Texas wedge when he had the option.

One thing is not like the other....

I take it you are a better broadcaster than Brandel? Otherwise you have to realize the hypocrisy, right?

The whole "you aren't as good a player so you can't comment" argument is so old and tired. Most commentators and most coaches in all sports are generally average players, students of the game if you will.....generally they had to work harder because they didn't have the natural talent, but understand the game.

Brandel has an opinion, and that is his job, by blowing up the internet complaining he is accomplishing exactly what he wants to do, create controversy and discussion. So congrats for helping Brandel accomplish his goals.

Brandel has balls. He comes out and basically tells it how he sees it. Right or wrong.

What has Brandel seen lately that would lead him to that conclusion?

Brandel plays a character on golf channel. He knows what is expected of him and he delivers a far better performance then he's even been capable of doing with the golf club in his hands. I give him props he plays the role well and I think it keeps things interesting.

Jack fell into a bad short game and loss of confidence which he revamped with Rodgers, but yips is an overstatement, at least have never seen that from Jack or Phil, so if they have said that would appreciate the source.

"It wasn't until 1980, when Nicklaus concedes that he had an attack of the chipping yips ("I wanted to putt it around bunkers"), that he contacted old friend Phil Rodgers for pointers." http://www.espn.com/...nist=diaz_jaime

Doesn't sound like an overstatement to me.

Jaime Diaz makes that conclusion. And the putting around bunkers quote is from an article from many years before by someone else. By end of 1979 Nicklaus' entire game was in disarray and he considered walking away. He was lazy (he says) about his short game, wasn't putting the time in on his game in general and had fallen into bad habits/patterns. His full swing had gotten steep, short game more inconsistent. It was lack of any technique and lack of practice/results and then confidence that was his problem. He was having a little slump.

He got together with Grout and revamped the full swing, he says to get more shallow, and improve his address position and some other things. From an article, a friendly piece of advice and knowing Rodgers he decided to get together with him. He didn't have the yips, he just had a bad short game.

I think Diaz (and there is another article out there that basically copies Diaz) does those people who really have yips a disservice by leading that article in that direction. Jack didn't putt around a bunker, he says he thought about it and Jack has said a lot of things over the years, but that's the greatest player ever not being able to master (or really put in much work on it until he was almost 40) a short game.

Here's a quote from a better piece years before written by someone else about Rodgers.

"[And if] Rodgers never met his potential as a player, he has exceeded it as a teacher, never more famously than in 1980 when his old pal Nicklaus forgot how to chip. "It was almost to the point where I had to putt around bunkers," Nicklaus recalls. So Nicklaus beckoned Rodgers, and what was to be a two-day tune-up at Nicklaus's place in Florida turned into a two-week transformation. "Phil totally revamped my short game and gave me confidence," Nicklaus says. "It was a significant part of why I won the U.S. Open in 1980." And, two months later, the PGA Championship."

Skip Bayless accused Troy Aikman of being gay…

Who would you rather commentate on football?

Brandel Chamblee has made insufferable comments about Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods over the years...

Who would you rather have commentate on golf?

Of course one need not be one of the greatest of all time to be a good commentator…Peter Jacobsen, Curtis Strange, Paul Azinger are excellent IMHO

But when you tout yourself as someone who understands Tigers mind because you slept on the lead after round 1 at Augusta in 1999(as Brandel has done) then I call into question your ability to judge reality...let alone comment on it..

After he took that time off in 2015, after started the year with short game problems, he came back at the Mastes chipping it great. Was able to hit any type of shot. No "yips". Then had a few bad ones at the end of the 4th round at the whydnam, but I think that was from lack of practice from his back not letting him do it.

So I tend to believe it is his technique. Maybe right now when he plays on the course he likes to turn his mind off and not think swing and tends to revert back to old motions at times. Hence why he said his game is not right for tournament play yet?

I will say this:

When Sean Foley decided the weaken Tigers grip on every shot( including chipping) I wanted him arrested for defacing a national treasure...

Any human who thought Tigers chipping and/or putting needed to change should have either been put in a straight jacket or tried for war crimes...

I watched the Chamblee piece, and apparently have a completely different take than many in this thread. He was effusive in his praise of Tiger and his impact on the game, seemed sincerely concerned about the health of Tiger's game. No one here or anywhere outside the Tiger camp knows what's going on. Chamblee hate is over the top on this one. Hawkeye is spot on, btw, Foley changed one of the best short games ever ..... but Tiger gave him the keys to the car.

As much as it pains me to say this, I'd take Johnny Miller over Brandel Chamblee. At least Johnny had the game to back up his comments.

Just curious Chris, how many times have you been on TV behind a desk with an actual opinion? Should they fire Jim Nantz? He has no pro experience at all.

But, Nantz does play by play. Imo, it doesn't matter if the PBP guys played or not. But, the commentator? Very important that he's had success at the highest level.

Chamblee would make a great, no strike that, he would be okay, no... make that a typical politician. Which way is the wind blowing and he'll make his comment of the day. Usually designed to grab headlines and attention. And I get it, that's his job. But it does make him come across as an a** most often.

Time after time on this site, people are critical of someone that hasn't performed at the highest level offering opinions of another person. It's an opinion. Chamblee has more credibility than probably anyone on this site. He HAS played at the highest level and he does his research to back up his opinions. He doesn't get it right all the time, but more than most.
