Double K's PHX Golf Adventure

Double K

Recommended Posts

Hi Gang,

Have a bunch of vacation saved up so will be in Phoenix for 5 of the last 8 weeks of 2016. I've been lucky enough to play a pile of courses in the Valley of the past few years and am willing to listen to those courses I've not played yet or maybe have overlooked.

I've played the following courses one or more times (sorted alphabetically for your viewing pleasure):

Aguila

Arizona Golf Resort

ASU Karsten

Club West

Dobson Ranch

Estrella Golf Club

Gold Canyon - Dinosaur Mountain

Gold Canyon - Sidewinder

Greenfield Lakes

GSU - Maryvale

Ken MacDonald

Kokopeli

Las Sendas

Legacy

Legend Trail

Longbow

Lookout Mountain

Papago

Raven at Verrado

Superstition Springs

Troon North - Monument

Troon North - Pinnacle

Vista Verde (Tegavah)

Wekopa - Cholla

Wekopa - Saguaro

Western Skies

The only courses that I haven't had the opportunity to play that are on my list for this year are, Wickenburg Ranch and Southern Dunes. I'd like to get out to Apache Stronghold, but not sure that December will be a good time for that.

Based on that list, what courses haven't I played that I should?

Edit: I stay in Mesa close to Longbow so prefer to golf in that part of the Valley.

Edit 2: added GSU - Maryvale

Wickenburg Ranch is fantastic. Probably as good as any of the courses listed above. Wickenburg also has Los Caballeros Golf Club which isn't going to be as nice as the Ranch but since you will be in the area....

Quintero Golf Club is on the way to Wickenburg. Great track also.

Anita's Cocina is a fun mexican food joint in downtown Wickenburg.

Don't forget Grayhawk also..since you will be close to the Troon courses

Not that you've missed much, but how have you not played Ocotillo and San Marcos? Just because of the location. It looks like, you've hit most of the others (that I can remember) in the area.

No reason to play San Marcos unless you want a boring traditional layout without redeeming qualities.

Power Ranch - decent course - very enjoyable, always in good shape

Poston Butte - average, but good shape and surprisingly good challenge

Vista Verde and Wekopa Cholla have been redone - so you should prob play those again.

Grayhawk should be on the list!

Whirlwind as mentioned. You don't have Raven South Mountain?

I stay in Mesa when down as well. One of the "cheaper" local courses that we play is Viewpoint. Its actually pretty good, really nice range if you just want to hit some balls too.

I actually prefer boring traditional layouts. But I wasn't recommending it, just commenting that it wasn't on his list.

Ocotillo is pretty far from Mesa and a bit on the upper price range for a bunch of retirees.

Dad's group usually sticks to the courses on the PHX City card(Papago, Dobson Ranch, Aguila, GCU). Bought the old man a WekoPass and the only time he used it was when I was down.

I'm definitely going to hit balls there in December. Have heard lots of good things about the practice area, previously have practiced at Greenfield Lakes.

Grand Canyon University Course is worth the drive...

Played there last this spring, have updated my list.

I'm confused, that is not what you asked in your OP. You asked for other courses not on your list to play! You didn't mention distance, a dad or a bunch of strippers on every hole!

I didn't expect to need a Canadian translation app to answer the post.

Easy now.

I was explaining why I don't have some of the obvious courses on my list.

I'm grateful for all the suggestions.

The fact that people spell Grayhawk with an e is endlessly fascinating to me. It seems so wrong in every way (and is) but I see it all of the time.

Ocotillo is a terrible facility golf wise. I honestly wouldn't play there for free. As I said in another thread it is a below average FL course in the desert. San Marcos should be good but manages to screw up a lot of the time. Highly unlikely that I will ever go back.

I'm confused by the scope of the question. Since you've traveled as far as We-KoPa already and have Wickenberg Ranch on your bucket list, I'll respond on the assumption that you are willing to travel that far and pay those types of green fees

Off the top of my head these are a few of my favorites that aren't on the list of what you've already played: (PS you should definitely play Southern Dunes. It may be the best course you haven't played.)

Grayhawk (both courses)

Talking Stick South

Sunridge Canyon

Ambiante @ Camelback

Los Caballeros

Boulders South

The Duke

TPC (both courses)

Talking Stick North

Boulders North

Eagle Mountain

Whirlwind (both Courses)

i visit the area about once every 18mos or so, and stay on the NE side, so most of my play is isolated to that area but i've made it to, in descending order for my preference regardless of cost

Troon North - Pinnacle

Boulders - South

Eagle Mountain

Wildfire - Faldo & Palmer

Legend Trail

Eagle Mountain

McDowell Mountain

Rancho Manana

Vista Verde (Tegavah)

The wildfire courses I hear are super expensive for those not staying at the Marriott, so I'd skip those, but Eagle Mountain is worth it and isn't on your list. Rancho is very fun for what it is and I'm sure I'll be back when I head down in a couple weeks.

Knocked Southern Dunes off the list. Golf was hampered by all the rain. Managed to get 8 rounds in. Highlight was meeting Jzona for some Xmas golf.

Back in late March.

Until then, tense up and swing hard!!
